Its a full on console game on iOS.
It probaldbly will stay high with its price tag.
The name alone will bring many instant buys.
Especially for people with hdmi cables, this'll be a purchase they will make in a heart beat.
    Plus, portable recent console game.
    That equals mucho sales.

    100% right.
From all of the interviews, the devs strategy is very clear.
They consider it a high end quality game.
    Its priced appropriately.
They are not going to fall in to the frequent sales/price drops strategy.
If it fails to sell at the price they've set, they will just reassess whether iOS is worth developing for or porting to.
    And do it no more.
This needs to succeed if we want more quality games. Waiting for sales/price drops/free wont work on this one.
I'm sure we all want more quality games, don't we.

I don't understand why you would play this hooked up to a TV via HDMI. If you were going to do that you might as well get the PS3 or 360 version of the game and, as noted, that is free for PS+ right now. However, actually playing on the iPad - that is just about the perfect game! So, yes, I'm buying. I'm a little worried about how huge it's going to be. I'm probably going to need to clear out a lot of space!

Exactly ! This is where all the 'i'll wait till the price drops or goes free' brigade ruin iOS. If a game like this is successful we'll get more and more 'big name' games. It happens with companies all the time, wait to see what a rival does and if it does well think 'well we'll now release our big name game as well on iOS...' etc.

Look at KOTOR, if that didnt sell well it would have been terrible. Glad it did.

The price isnt an issue, for me its the filesize !!! Again Apple need 128 gig ipods!

But again it makes me laugh when someone buys a 200-400 dollar device yet wont spend money on something like this.

    Roll on this week !!

"XCOM: Enemy Unknown lead designer Jake Solomon explains, making it fit on iOS meant "down-rezzing" the textures and "cutting the map count... quite a bit".

    Anyone worried by this??

From what i saw on the demo video, no, i am not worried. Im pretty sure the graphics will be less than its console counterparts, but it would still looks good on the ipad/minipad/iphone screens.

Has there been any sort of official word on the size of the app?

Not yet but they said that it would be pretty close to the limit (2GB compressed). So it could be between 1.7-2.6gb.

If you're installing through iTunes on your device, I'd guess you'll need about 5gb of free space to install it.
It'll probably be just below the 2gb compressed limit and likely to hit 3gb (or very close) installed size.
    That's what I'd guess anyway.
I think this one I'll download to computer first and then install through iTunes desktop. Probably save a whole lot of time that way.

I got downvoted on the front page article for saying the reduction in graphical quality was very noticeable. I'm not saying gameplay isn't more important and I still plan on buying it, but in comparison to the PC version, yeah, I thought it looked kinda bad. The lighting was ridiculously flat. I would have preferred a game built from scratch with iOS in mind so that the graphics can be redone in a way that suits the power of the device, rather than having obviously toned down textures from another version, but obviously that would require a large budget.

Considering they also said there would be less maps... for a game that was already criticised for being short on maps... it's almost like this will act as more of a demo for the "full" PC and console versions. I'll get my fun out of it, but it's not what I'd hoped for if I'm being honest.

I agree with what you said but that's just looking at some screenshots. I guess we'll have to wait and see how the game looks in motion!

Considering the game is 12.7 gigs installed on my PC I can understand the need to downsize the game. There's no way I could come close to freeing up that much space on my devices. That said, I havn't been this excited for an IOS release since Agricola released ages ago.

Concerns about the map count have certainly blunted my excitement for the X-Com Enemy Unknown port. It's exiting to see the effort being made and better than nothing but "quite a bit" fewer levels feels like a raw deal. I could care less if it featured stick figure people fighting blurry blobs of aliens but reduced content stings a little.

yes, $20 is a lot for an iOS game. But this isn't an iOS game at all, it's a console/PC game PORTED to iOS. It's the same with KOTOR. I think people realize that, that's why KOTOR is still in the top charts, and The World Ends with You (DS port) sold very well.

iOS ports are expensive, and that's completely fine. We complain and rant that games are going freemium, and now he we are with a fantastic game with no IAP and yet people are complaining. What exactly do you want? Firaxis is giving us exactly what we have been asking for a very long time; a 'pay up front' game without any IAPs and worth the price.

Considering it's still being sold on Steam for $39.99, this is a great deal. And I suspect we'll see in the top charts for a good while.

Filling in a $25 iTunes gift card right now (a gift for myself :p).

I am only willing to pay $1 per 200MB of textures!

Just kidding. I would have paid more than $20 for this. Whatever, it's not their fault the max size for an app bundle is 2gb. We can only hope that if Apple increases this size in the future, they would release an update with better assets.

Seems reasonable to me, hoping for the best as I'd like to see this be sucessful enough to warrent a Civ 5 port too.

Can't they make additional cut-out content as " free " DLC that needs to be downloaded separately once you buy the game ?
