Will sending my scratched iTouch in to Apple get it repaired?

Hey all, I just lent my iPod Touch 3G to my younger brother and got it back with a bunch of hairline scratches and a couple of those really nasty deep scratches that leave a rainbow effect on the glass when the device is turned on.

Being a rabid gadget perfectionist, this has ticked me off.

    A lot.

Now, I know I should have gotten a screen protector, but that's... not an option now. What I DO want to know is how to get those dang things off.

Is it possible to send it in to Apple to get a replacement? I've heard that Apple occasionaly repairs these things, just to cater to customers. If I did send it in, would there be a fee for replacement? I just got this thing two months ago; I'm NOT thrilled with the idea of having a flawed screen until the next iTouch update.

Someone mind helping me out? :(

    Thanks!

I'm wondering too. I jailbroke my iPod, though, and I have it worse - GIANT CRACK - not scratch, CRACK - through the center. I'll restore, though.
Hm... I would say they might not, just because I've heard that the Apple warranties SUCK.

I believe they do repair your iPod Touch, but you will have to pay. I'm guessing around $200 or so to replace the screen of your iPod, as that's what it cost for my iPhone 3GS when the screen cracked. They will just give you a reburished, basically new iPod Touch 3G as a replacement I believe.

Whuh-oh. I broke mine out of the slammer too; I've also got a couple of *coughcoughpiratedappcoughcough* in there too. I'll have to restore mine too.

Sucks to be you, man. I feel for ya.

In a related question, can someone direct me to the place where iTunes stores backups?? I'd like to make a copy of my backup before wiping my Touch. Last time I wiped, my backup (this was a year ago, on my old unjailbroken iTouch) didn't show up.

I still have not re-started Zenonia. :insert slightly irritated looking smiley here:

    HOLY WOW. That is insanity.

Would sending in a whiny letter about how much I love my brand-new Touch and how very very sad I am now that the supposedly scratch-proof screen has received a very nasty SCRATCH OF EVIL do instead??

    *that was sarcasm*

I HAVE heard that talking to an Apple Genius about this has gotten some people's devices repaired free of charge. However, Hayden, ID has no Apple Store. This is an alarming development.

If you're willing to take the plunge, you can replace it yourself, but it's a really delicate operation.

DIY repair on expensive gadgets... gives me the jibblies even worse than "that one painting in my brother's closet".

    Here they come...

JIBBLIE JIBBLIE JIBBLIE JIBBLIE JIBBLIE JIBBLIE JIBBLIE JIBBLIE

Whew. All jibblies aside, I am NOT the replace-it-yourself kinda guy. All I want to know is:

-Where do I send my iPod to if I want to try to bluff it into being replaced?

-Is there someone, somewhere who as actually managed to do this?

-If I do send it in and Apple gives me a razzberry for my impudence, will I get it back?

-And off-topically, is there a way to failsafe-backup my iTouch?

Be pissed at me if you want, but I wish karma would completely break it for what you are doing.

edit: yes, I'm all for jailbreaking but not pirating.

I agree with the phago but here is the deal I have told the infamous 'being body slammed for a dime' story but here it goes
We were bored one day on a school trip to DC so we decided to mix things up one kid through down a penny and there was a tussle to get it. then someone had the bright idea to through in the dime during the renewed conflict one of my friends picked up the other and threw him over his sholder (sp) corse he got the dime but... the friend who was tossed had his itouch in his pocket wich promplt smashed cracked the glass. When he got home he took it to the Apple store and they said that the warrenty only covered internal issues.
You should also know that once you Jailbroke your Ipod you voided your warrenty anyway.

Nope. Apple only repairs devices due to internal injuries, and only things caused by the device (EX. it fails) and not the user (EX. You dropped it). Honestly you will probably need to get a new one if you want an uncracked device or...... you could possible try to induce failure and take it to an apple store. I recently had to get a new 3GS because it wouldnt charge. If you were up to it, you could possibly open it up and remove a part, then put it back together (ever so perfectly) and take it to a store. They might not notice anything and will just assume it died on the inside.

That's actually a decent idea... but I'd be wary of opening it up and taking anything out. The people at an Apple store won't know your phone is jailbroken unless you have a theme or something obvious that they can tell.

If you could leave it jailbroken, but remove all obvious traces (enough so that the people at the genius bar wouldn't be able to tell it's jb after 5-10 mins of messing around with it), you might be able to disable wi-fi or something like that, and convince them it's an internal issue.

That leads me to wonder if it's possible to break it intentionally using a jailbreak app, then restore with the damage still done.

I guess it'd depend on the type of damage made. Maybe cause a couple of dead pixels on a corner of a screen. HD damage would just be stupid.

You won't get a replacement without coughing up some more dough. And as someone said, one you went the jailbreak route, you voided the warranty. You either live with it, or if you're going to spend the dough, buy the iPad in March. It's an oversized Touch anyway.

For me, they have been amazing! I had a 1.5 year old pair of iPhone earbuds and one side broke, they gave me a brand new one for free without testing the old one or even asking for a receipt. They were great when I had problems with the white MacBook awhile ago. Overall, Apple does a great job on backing up their products that I purchase :)

OT: I would call apple support up and ask them what your options are.

Yeah they replaced my sister's MacBook for free after 18 months when she'd only had a 1-year warranty. Sounds like good service to me.

Tchck! I see that I have stepped on a few toes.

For the record, it was five months ago; I decided to use ********** (EDIT: wow, the "*****us" apps get a majorly bad rap around here. Sorry for stepping on toes!! :()to try out a few EA games that didn't have Lite versions.

They sucked, but I didn't delete them. I probl'y should have. Anyway, anything not put out by a mega-company I shell out cash for. Games like EDGE and Tap-Fu deserve some respect.

In any case, it looks like I'm probably screwed.

    Here's the situation:

Two-inch-or so scratch on upper-left side of iPod touch. It's big enough to just barely insert my fingernail. I have NO IDEA how my brother managed this. I'll have to ask him once he wakes up. That jiu-jitsu choke hold I learned last week was surprisingly effective. ;)

I was planning to send it in to Apple (backed up, wiped, and restored) with a letter to the effect that I just bought their supposedly scratch-proof device which was then flawed within two months of purchase.

Will this do any good? I've been told that Apple occasionally replaces random iPods for free to keep customers happy. And if they don't, hey, no loss to me as long as they send it back.

I would like to call Apple up; what's their number?

Thanks for helping out! You guys are awesome!!

Apple has never said that there device is scratch-proof. They will say that it is scratch-resistant.
