I'm looking for a fairly high end ($500?) netbook, which is the best as far as performance, battery, etc.? I know some people dislike them (*cough*Steve Jobs*cough*) but it fits the bill for me right now. Thanks, Ben

Ooh, that looks nice. I've actually been thinking about getting a netbook as well, although personally I am not looking to spend as much as ben18. This one looks pretty damn good and it's about the price I was hoping for...
Thanks for the reply, I've got a new question: Which is better, a high end netbook or low end notebook for the same (ish) price?
I purchased a netbook back in October right after Windows 7 started making its way onto em. There are a couple things that I would recommend now as I've seen them progress. For 500+ you can find a pretty nice netbook. Get one with the SU#### processor, they're dual core like 1.2 GHz processors that can handle the HD playback a little better. The netbooks I've seen with this processor also usually have an HDMI port (I wish mine had one). You'll also want 2GB+ of ram. Newegg has had some nice prices on these netbooks. Apple can suck it when it comes to netbooks. As a student that enjoys walking where I go, I don't need a huge laptop in my book bag. While the iPad is great, I don't think it is ideal for students. It's more of a time waster than having any productivity value to it.
Thanks, and I agree. The iPad is a luxury item at this point, at least for me. I can see why people want them though...
This is what I wish I would have got. A little more than a net book, but what I want in a laptop. 13.3in screen, dual core, 9+ hours battery life, 3gb of ram, hdmi, 320gb hard drive. It's 4lbs, but I think the added weight over netbooks would be worth it. Still much lighter than most other laptops at this price. Seems they pretty much just ripped the CD drive out, which is no big deal since I have a desktop.
If he were an octogenarian that wants to view the AARP website in large, comfortable letters, sure. As much as I'd like an iPad, there's no way I'd have it replace a Windows running netbook.
Why? for $100 more he could double the specs of everything in that computer, for only 1 pound more. To be honest, I think netbooks are their way out, and the elimination of cd drives on standard laptops is on the way in. But really, that's the middle ground everyone with a desktop pc wants. Or a tablet with an innovative slide out keyboard suitable for at least 500 word tasks.
I see a lot of them ship with Windows 7 Starter. Is that a decent OS, or would I definitely want XP Home given the choice between the two?
I've heard windows 7 runs well on netbooks. Do netbooks need antivirus software? Are there any free ones?
I still maintain that 99% of virus avoidance is common sense, but if you're not sure you trust yourself I'd go with AVG Free.
Check your ISP's website, they may provide a free one. Also, if you are in college, your school may have one you can get for free.
