Sorry if this is in the wrong section but, Which is better: Jailbreaking or updating to iOS4? iOS4 Pros: I would get folders, playlist making, and others that i don't know. Cons: No multitasking or backgrounds. Jailbreaking: Pros: No idea yet. Cons: Risk of my ipod breaking. Rare, but still.
I'm not sure really. I am happy with iOS4, but I'm sure those who have Jailbroken would tell you that it's nowhere near as comprehensive as the JB. Give iOS4 a try, what can you lose?
If you JB with redsn0w beta 3, then you get multitasking & backgrounds [I have the same device as you] It doesn't hurt performance; it works just fine. @sammy *Technically* you do have something to lose if you update to iOS4 because once you update, you can't downgrade to an older firmware.
How about Spirit JB because that's what someone told me to use. Also, i've been thinking about jailbreaking because almost everyone i know that has an ipod touch has jailbroken it.
Ahahaha np dude, just spreadin' the word I can't offer a full opinion on Spirit; I've only used redsn0w b3 to JB my iOS4 device.
Jailbreaking would give you the option of custom icons as well, which is always nice. Plus being able to use folders how you want to. Go too far with the JB apps and you'll notice a change in iPod performance and battery life, but I've found with just Winterboard, CategoriesSB and SBSettings there's little to no difference on my Touch 2G.
Blackra1n, I haven't updated to iOS4 yet... I don't really need to since I've got folders and wallpapers. Once the games start requiring it I'll update and JB again.
Has anyone here used Spirit? I was just wondering if there is any difference between the different programs. Don't you just end up with a jailbrokened ipod touch?
I used to the jailbreak thing -- started just after the iPod Touch came out, stopped when the 3GS came out. There used to be tons of benefits to jailbreaking, but successive OS revisions have slowly eliminated many of those reasons. To be sure, there are still certain things jailbreaking offers: Real multitasking, system tweaking (beyond what the Settings app offers), full customization (video wallpaper, icons -- though it's literally impossible to have a full set of theme-appropriate icons unless you only have supported apps installed, which is unlikely), stacks, unlimited "folders", and a few other benefits. But for me, jailbreaking, ended up being more trouble than it's worth. To start with were stability issues -- issues that are worse on low-memory devices like your 2G device. (May not be as big an issue for iPod Touch, but for iPhone, where you really need stability, it's essential.) Then there's the release of new OS versions, for which I had to wait until a jailbreak was available for each one before I upgraded. And then upgrading itself was a pain in the ass as it involved manually backing everything up through SSH, which meant remembering what all you had to back up, and then restoring it after upgrading and re-jailbreaking ... it gets old after a while, and ultimately the benefits ceased to outweigh the rigmarole of the upgrade/jailbreak process for me. Plus, there's a bit of a stigma on the jailbreak scene attached to piracy ever since ********** and whatever the hell other associated programs turned up on the scene. Not really a pro or con per se, but at least you don't have to explain your non-piratical reasons for jailbreaking if ever someone bugs you about it.
It's not entirely retarded thinking (well, generalizing is); a lot of idiots do jailbreak because they can pirate. I know of at least a few who even frequent here. More to the point though, the jailbreaking = piracy thing has been covered a lot in online media/blogs so those who don't bother looking too deeply into the concept tend to make that equation. I'm not saying it's right, but as it goes with such things, there is a nugget of truth under the ignorance, it's just that the average Joe is content to take ignorant, blanket statements at face value.
Are you serious? Having to re-jailbreak once every 12 months and some teen on the internet calling you a bad person?
