I'l start with my opinions! FPS: Star Warfare (not many maps or options, but for an iPhone fps it plays well and I think its hardcore to level up!). SpaceSim Galaxy on Fire is here for me at the moment, not sure if I would class it as true hard core, but to get the space station it takes a good effort. Shooter: Can't remember the name of the game (pants!) but there was a good top down shooter with a few maps in. One of them was a bank and there were 3 classes of armour you can buy. Probably the most competitive top down multiplayer shooter out there, if only I could remember what it was and get it again... RPG: There are lots of RPG games on the app store and a few good ones, Crimson Heart would be the most demanding and hard core one in terms of grinding as far as I can tell. Don't like the fact you lose all your data when you reinstall the app though! Casual: Hardcore Casual is definitely a paradox! However, Angry Birds almost fits into this impossible to obtain niche with the number of levels that ask for 3 stars it. Turn Based Strategy: It's not marketed as a hard core game and is easy to play but with leader boards, the ability to pile up money and level new characters Hunters 1 and 2 are sure fire hits!
Ascendancy and Red Conquest are both pretty awesome. Mission Europa and Lara Croft are pretty fun and challenging too. Oh, and anything from Cave but Mushihimesama is my favorite.
Dungeon Defenders Ascendancy Avadon:The Black Fortress Aquaria King of Dragon Pass Final Fantasy tactics All deep and really huge games that are so very different from the casual games that are flooding the Appstore...wait a min... of course they are! Since they are ports. lol
GTA 3 Chaos Rings series The Final Fantasy ports Chrono Trigger Bard's Tale Aralon The Quest Lego HP Real Racing 2 Sonic CD Crazy Hedgy Galaxy on Fire 2 Space Miner Dead Space Bike Baron Street Fighter IV: Volt Waking Mars MC3 Ravenmark Battle for Wesnoth Many more I can't think of right now

Great question Here are the ones on my iDevice right now, but there are tons more: DoDonPachi: Blissful Death (representing CAVE, as their hardest iOS game to date) Jukebeat Igowin Pro iNetHack The Impossible Game Wild Frontier Super Crate Box Avadon HD Ascendancy Palm Heroes 2 Deluxe Civilization: Revolution Trism Battle Academy Titan HD Wabash Cannonball Trainyard Romance of the Three Kingdoms Nobunaga's Ambition Dance Dance Revolution Fritz Chess SmartGo Kifu TChess Pro Pix n' Love Rush Orions 2 Football Manager 2011 Greyhound Manager Eliss (original version) Red Conquest RogueTouch Dominion (Vaccarino) The Quest Huebris
That's an interesting question. When someone says hardcore game, I think Demon's Souls, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and NetHack. What is your definition of the term and what games do you think of?
Depends on how you define hardcore. Most Freemiums with forced/required consumable IAPs are hardest core (hard corest? LOL) if you mean difficulty. Although here are the ones I think that rock most... Fireball SE (just hard... to the core) League of Evil 2 (it is pretty hardcore if you consider the leaderboards) Dungeon Raid Dead Space (scary stuff is pretty hardcore) Shadowgun (a badass who pulls human brains from machines) Modern Combat 3 Chaos Rings series Necrorun (what's more hardcore than playing as Death himself and decapitating knights in jousts?) Gravity Guy (furious speed right there. just hardcore. LOL) Crimsonheart Aralon Did I miss anything? LOL
While clearly opposed to 'casual' I suppose 'hardcore' could be defined in very different ways... One way would be games with steep or vertical learning curves i.e. games which you need to play dozens of times before you begin to get an inkling of how the game works or what you need to do... FWIW, I can think of two iOS ports of board games with such learning curves: Titan HD Imperial and would be curious to hear of others.
