Might as well try to answer that myself! 1) The "Free Rogue" uses an awful gesture based system, Rogue Touch offers two control methods- one is much like what you are used to after playing 100 Rogues (tap the edges and corners of the screen- we did it first of course ), the other is an actual D-Pad control which a ton of people prefer. The inventory and items in Rogue Touch are handled through a quick and easy menu system that work FAR better than gestures. 2) The "Free Rogue" uses a free RLTiles set for graphics. Rogue Touch uses a few RLTiles, and a bunch of custom drawn stuff. Rogue Touch also has some animation to denote attacks, hits, misses, spells, and traps. 3) The "Free Rogue" does not follow all rogue conventions, you cannot throw potions for example. You can do that in Rogue Touch, and it does have strategic use- blind or confuse enemies with potions as an example. 4) The "Free Rogue" does not have online leaderboards, Rogue Touch does, hosted on a web server at my expense for the last two years. 5) The "Free Rogue" has not been updated since its release in 2008, and still has a few awful bugs in it. Rogue Touch has been updated numerous times, added multitasking and retina support (for all text on screen), and is continuing development even now, almost 2 years later 6) Rogue Touch has special weapons and secret characters in it (see my forums for info on all of them and their abilities). The "Free Rogue" does not. And finally, the trailer: So, you tell me... is that worth a measly $2.99 or not? Especially when it helps support my upcoming roguelike projects Spirit Hunter Mineko and Rogue Touch EX?
Interesting. The controls of "Free Rogue" are awful, jusy plain awful. Better controls alone almost warrant the 3 dollar price tag. The other points seem valid as well, not to mention that theres a map as well(a very important feature). It certaibtly seems as if Rogue Touch is a must buy for any fan of Rogue or hardcore dungeon crawlers. Care to divulge some info on this "Rogue Touch EX"? or is there some webpage that already has info on this?
Yipe 5 is a overlooked but very fun oldschool RPG: http://appshopper.com/games/yipe-5 And there is a lite too: http://appshopper.com/games/yipe-5
Yep, you're right I actually forgot to include the Mini-map as a plus, its such a basic and necessary feature of Rogue Touch I didn't mention it. But playing without it would be murder! Rogue Touch EX (the working title) has only been teased by me around here so far (well, it was also mentioned on the TouchArcade front page last summer ), however I will be rolling out a completely new website this spring and you can bet there will be more info there. I will also be starting a thread in the Upcoming Games section for it when I am ready to release official screenshots and such. Briefly, it's going to kick rogue up several notches in terms of gameplay and animation, adding features that just don't fit into the classic Rogue formula. Expect things like classes (warrior, wizard, rogue) and some varied "quests" beyond the traditional "get the amulet of yendor and return alive". Very little code is written yet (Spirit Hunter Mineko and my day job have been eating up most of my programming time), but I have had an artist working on sprites for it off and on since last summer, so it should come together pretty quick! Those that want a pure rogue experience can stick with Rogue Touch. It will continue to receive updates, including an OpenGL based overhaul of the entire system that I am currently working on... and possibly a Universal update that modifies the game for iPads if I ever manage to buy my own iPad this year ---- On the subject of Cavern, I am sorry to see that it has vanished so completely. The last I had spoken with Sami (admittedly quite a while back) he seemed to have a lot of ideas and plans for the long term growth of the game. Cavern was not quite a roguelike, but its differences made it refreshing and fun to play. Maybe he will return with an all new adventure someday...
Yeah, it's a real shame, I liked Cavern a lot. Does it cost a developer to keep a game on the app store?
Just an fyi to everyone who posted in this topc. Ive done much playing of roguelkes and dungeon crawlers snce i poseted this topic, and i must recommend SlashEM. This is a classic roguelike based off of nethack. Its fun, has lots of depth, good controls, hard as all hell, and best of all, its free! Although it may not be as pretty as Sword of Fargoal or have as intuive controls as Rogue Touch, the $0.00 pricetat makes it worth the download. Its gotten more playtime than alot of my paid apps. Worth at least a try
A bit of a thread-necro here, but I just wanted to correct a bit of misinformation from, ack, the first page. The Dungeon does, in fact, have procedurally generated levels, meaning each playthrough will be different. Also, glad to hear you think it's worth a playthrough
The Dark Cloud series are good dungeon crawler games. But you will probably have to download a ROM for it.
