Haha! To be honest mate I have 2 big books and have hardly read either! I have read up to Chapter 4 on iPhone Development, and have used the other one on Objective C purely for reference- even then only once or twice! I have had more help on here than any book. Btw, good news! I have decided to re-do my trailer, using GarageBand to re-score it with the music track and manually add the appropriate sound effects myself. So the new one, as soon as it is uploaded and ready, will be embedded on the op instead, and everyone should be able to hear what the sound effects are really like.
Sorry for double-posting, but I would like to let everyone know the new improved-audio trailer is now up!! This is now posted on the first post of the thread too.
ARRRGHHH!!! I can't win!! When you say you don't like the hitting sounds- do you mean in general or just in the trailer because you want to hear the music more? You can always listen to the full version of the music on its own- that hasn't got the sound effects. Glad you like it.
the gameplay looks so nice, graphics are unique, music fits perfectly... and sounds make that all just a bit messy.
It might be a bit late to suggest this, but when doing a trailer you can always use an audio cable to hook your iDevice up to external speakers. This more than makes up for the little built in iDevice speakers. Again, let me just say that this is an awesome product for a first effort. You're way ahead of the curve, and I think you'll be rewarded well in sales.
I tried that, but my camera still recorded it poorly. Thanks for your kind re-assuring words. You have been a major help to me- much appreciated. Got it. Listening with my headphones on this time, you are right- they do overpower everything else. This will do until I upload a final version. At least everyone can hear how the sound effects really sound now. Thanks for your help Pante.
The punching sound can be better but it gets the job done. So, no issue with it. Make sure you have a big satisfying POW sound for the last punch that K.O. the opponent. You can also slow down the last several frames (with blur motion if possible) when the opponent falls to give a more dramatic effect.
Having a "POW" sound for the finishing blow sounds a good idea for the update. Regarding slowing down the last frames, I can't do blur motion unless the sprites are drawn that way. They have 3 frames of animation when they get knocked down, so slowing it down will look really crap. Besides, I actually think it looks more realistic and satisfying when you hit them and they fall to the floor more quickly and realistically. Good ideas though. Right- final version of the trailer now on the first post. Audio levels are now more balanced, so the music isn't pushed to the background, and sound effects can still be heard, but aren't deafening. That's definitely it- no more versions- final.
Just a thought, maybe show some gameplay earlier in the video? There's words on the screen for the majority of the video, and it takes about 30 seconds before you actually see the game.
Don't you like the suspense? I had thought of that, but I didn't want to show game footage until I had shown the title of the game, and I really wanted the title to appear where it does in the music. You only need to see a few shots of the game anyway, and they are in there. If I brought them in sooner, I would have nothing to show later except more of the same thing, and I didn't want to do that. And I certainly didn't want to shorten the music. I know what you mean though and appreciate what you are saying, but ultimately I went with what we have now.
Nice work "yuthe"!! Quick question, what are some useful skills to have before attempting to learn objective c??? Did you have any other experience aside from everyday computer knowledge?? Anyway the game looks solid, very nice graphics.
If youre planning to release the video to public, you shouldnt assume people will have the patient to watch the entire movie. Give them what they want to see first as soon as possible. I second CDubby94 for the idea. And I think you should remove "his first iPhone game". It is okay for us as we know you but just consider what other may think. You want to give confidence to your potential buyers. Just my two cents.
Like I said in an earlier post, I programmed in BASIC on my old Acorn Electron, ZX Spectrum, and then the Atari ST all those years ago. Not much use now, except it did teach me the art of using logic in your code. You need to have the right mind-set to be able to get your head around problems you'll come across. If you have the puzzle-solving ability and are able to think logically about how to make your code more efficient, then programming is for you. Points taken on board. It's great to get all this feedback- positive and negative. Regarding the trailer, like I said, I completely understand what you are saying. It's just I think I have worked on it enough for the moment, and may release a second trailer at a later stage, or even a strategy guide video, which will of course show more game footage.
