The problem is Gameloft's business strategy requires cranking out ten games that share a similar codebase and as many assets as possible to hedge their bets against the rock bottom pricing of the App Store. If BioWare released something on the iPhone that wasn't a port, I doubt we'd see the levels of depth that we've grown used to in their games. How can you possibly employ the creative teams required to build the massive game universes that each of their games take place in to sell at a maximum of $10?
Wow, this keeps going. dogmeat, please just deal with the fact that some people here are not technology snobs, we have fond memories of the old days and like the direction things have gone. Quality has gone up in some ways, down in other ways, stayed the same in other ways. I remember playing Pac Man in the arcades and loving it. I watched Avatar in IMAX 3D and enjoyed it. I could make this go on forever, but don't misplace your opinion as the opinions of everyone from your generation.
I can't believe nobody's put Mass Effect bluntly on their list yet... A game where the choices you make actually mean the life or death of your character, and what content you can unlock in the game. (At least, with the two further installments.) A game with ultimate replayability. It had an awesome storyline, too. And in 3D, with some of the best graphics seen on consoles. That and KOTOR made me expect more out of a game than just run-and-gun. Bioware's a group of friggin' geniuses. I guess I should just be happy that they're not producing games that look like they were meant for other, low-cost phones. What Gameloft's doing with the iDevices is still impressive... I just wish they would take some time to hire some better voice-actors, at least. NOVA's perfect for me on the iPhone... Except for when anyone actually talks. Yeah, you're right. There's no way Bioware could do such a project without charging huge sums of money for the game. And it would take up a crap-load of space on the iDevice just to include all the content. Seems I'm just dreaming aloud here. Guess I'll just stick to Rogue Planet and Red Conquest for the time being.
KOTOR's not nearly to the scale of Mass Effect, but it was what started the "choices affect what happens to you" aspect that you find in ME. If you take the time to follow all the backstories and side-quests, it's a pretty remarkable game, in terms of content and depth.
Because now devs aren't limited by the 3D engine they made themselves, and or, aren't stuck spending dev time on a 3D engine when they could have been putting it into gameplay. Add this to devs who have great ideas but could never put them forward without a 3D engine.
I for one look forward to games coming out on IPhone like shadow complex which used unreal engine and was a 3d side scrolling action adventure e that came out on XBLA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRtkOvmxFbo
is this the thread about the Unreal Engine being released on the iPhone or why today's games are crap
Apparently Unreal Engine 3 being released on the iPhone is why today's games are crap. I don't get it either.
It's like a work of art: a bowl of fruit looks like a bowl of fruit to some people, while to others it's symbolic of interracial relationships. Opinions, opinions. I believe we got to the topic through saying that the 3D of the Unreal engine or any engine would just be the cover-up for a lack of "enjoyable" gameplay.
troll... NOVA is one of the most groundbreaking apps out right now, why are you even posting here? this is amazing news, this gives all the indie devs a shot at making their own FPS games, ala Masquereade Bloodlines... this will be revolutionary!
I think this is great news and there is so much to do with this technology. It will make the FPS games better and there is still plenty of marketspace for other games! You can make other amazing games with the Unreal Engine as well. Now you have to trust the Developers to make a game first then use the graphics. Much like movies or comics need a good story and then great art to have a true classic.
@dogmeat If there is an engine for developers to use, they don't have to spend as much time on the graphics, and can spend more on the story, gameplay, and whatever else you like. It would be the same if there was a 2D engine. End of conversation.
he's just a troll, his arguments are completely pointless and it sounds like hes implying that iPhone gaming is pointless... its what I like to call a Drama Queen
I'd love to have an Adventure/RPG with this engine. Maybe the sequel to Ravensword can use it .....one can only dream
Take a look @ Masquerede Bloodlines, that was an amazing RPG that used the Source Engine... so did that other FPS Swords & Spells one, i forgot the name, but with Q3 available, the sky is the limit for touch device gaming!
i just hope that when dev start making games with ue3 they dont leave the people with older ipod touch's out because i doubt with engine having such good graphics it wont work on older idevices
