First, Avatar (my favorite movie) beat Titanic today Second, read this and vote... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1245686/Star-Wars-set-Avatar-style-makeover-earn-studios-billions.html
Star Wars is the bane of my existence that's going to follow me until the day I die. Why oh why do people obsess about cheesy second-rate sci-fi? I mean I love Total Recall but I don't obsess over it the way Star Wars/Star Trek/Harry Potter/Twilight/Avatar fans and fans of other goofy crap do. Every time Star Wars cycles around again and I'm forced to go through the advertising grinder the envelops modern America and deal with people who feel the need to talk to me about their enjoyment of crap. I'm not a Star Wars fan, but that doesn't stop people from assuming I am and wanting to talk to me about it endlessly even though I couldn't give a flying crap. If you like a movie, that's great, eat your popcorn and shut up. I don't want to be exposed to or talk about any of it but you can't block out the ads. Nope, you can't block out the ads. If Star Wars sees another theatrical release I'm going to leave civilization and become a hermit.
True fact, George Lucas took his name off Howard the Duck because he knew nothing else he'd ever be involved with could hope to compare with it's awesomeness.
If I sound bitter it's only because I've worked in and out of theaters for most of the past decade and feel the full force of the advertising blitz and obnoxious fanboys whenever one of these nerd blockbusters comes out.
I can understand re-watching your favorite episode every few years or so just cause, but re-watching the entire series just because it's in 3D? The **** is up with that? Nah, both of them can be pretty bad. Anyone that obsesses over a fictional character in a fictional world kinda annoys me.
No, Avatar nerds are worse than Harry Potter nerds. You don't see hardly anything about Star Wars these days, mostly just about "break-through" movies like Avatar. Oh how I hate Avatar...
The Harry Potter fans tend to dress up more then Star Wars ones, I think that's mostly due to the fact that a cape, wand and stupid glasses are cheaper and more comfortable to sit in for 2 hours then a stormtrooper costume. Star Wars fans tend to be more chatty and serious about their love for the movies which IMO certainly makes them more obnoxious. The number of conversations I've had with Star Wars fans who absolutely refuse to accept that anyone could not share their love for the franchise is downright crazy.
Some of the Harry Potter nerds parents scare me. Something about them just ain't right. Still, in my book Star Trek fans are in a league of their own. Klingon as a language? Come on!
The language thing does take it a bit too far but as far as I know Star Wars remains the only franchise to be spun into a cult/religion. http://www.jedichurch.org/ I think we can all agree that anyone who is obsessed enough to join a religion or learn a fictional language based on a science fiction film should seek professional help (or give up and join scientology).
I will defer to your judgement on this. You do have a unique perspective. How do these things happen. I have seen a similar phenomenom with SCA members.
hey, AVATAR has its own language which some (Skipper587 ) follow and are trying to make the new Klingon! Stupid Na'vi
Advertising builds hype which creates fans. Fans create communities whose members feed off each other increasing their general enthusiasm. At some point for some enthusiasm turns to obsession expressing itself in horrible ways. Time spent memorizing insignificant details in order to discuss the obsession in more detail, making fan art, writing fanfic, eventually going out in public dressed in costume, founding religions and learning fake languages. That's my theory anyway.
I worked at an IMAX years ago with poor ventilation and skinny exit hallways, they kind of smell like cattle too.
