Wow, when you look at the replies in this thread: you can either "love" or "hate" this game - there's nothing in between.
If you precisely define the term 'pick up and play' I'll give you the names of à dozen better games instantly. But as I stated above: tastes differ. And opinions are always very subjective.
I have Tilt to Live (TtL) too but I don't like it that much. I mean... it begins with a few dots, easy to kill, but after a few waves the screens fills with dots and then I'm dead pretty quick (maybe I just suck at this game, I don't know). In my opinion: the real downside of TtL is that you just get one life and it's accelerometer controllable only. Btw... why don't you change your address to one that doesn't have taxes?
Okay, let's say perfect for a gameplay of a few (1-5) minutes, wants you to try again and go for a higher score and compete with other players.
You just have to exercise a bit to get better. The real fun comes when you destroy huge amounts of dots and manage to escape from ridiculously desperate situations.
ALL pick-up-and-play games either hook you or they dont. The very nature of the genre is that the games can look underwhelming until you sit down with the thing and something clicks. If it doesnt click for you, then you are left not understanding the appeal and thinking its just a limited game with minimal graphics and gameplay. The reasons why one game grabs you and another doesnt will always be hard to define, because the amount of gameplay and quality of graphics arent really the selling points of these games. Pick up and play games are games that, by defition, you really arent going to know if you like until you try it. And preferably try it a few times, since its not always love at first sight. If you dont have the money to take a risk, then save your money for a highly recommended game in a genre that you know you love (like racing, rpg, whatever) which is probably a safer bet then a highly rated casual game, which will always be a little bit of a risk. Personally, I enjoy tilt-to-live and recommend it highly, but believe that the 2 additional modes add very little. One new mode "Code Red" is really just a difficulty setting, which fixes the problem that the game stays a little too slow a little too long in normal mode. Its not a new mode, its a new difficulty that saves you from being bored for the first 50 seconds of the normal mode. As for the other new mode, although some seem to like it, the "gauntlet" mode would not, in my opinion, have attracted any attention as a stand-alone game. For me, its just not that great.
