I think Sprint is the only company bold enough to lie and say they have a 4g network. I try to avoid commercials though, so maybe you've seen a verizon one.
what is mind boggling to me is that AT&T called out verizon on their commercial bashing their "map of coverage" and yet, I see a new commercial bashing the map every other week.
As a developer and longtime Apple follower I'll tell you what you'll probably see this coming summer for the iPhone (Anything not explicitly mentioned here should be assumed to be the same as an iPhone 3GS): CPU: Bump to 800Mhz, still single core RAM: Remains at 256MB Storage: 32/64GB Models (up to 128GB on the iPod Touch) Cell Radio: Maybe new frequencies to allow use on Verizon and Sprint, but don't bet on it. Wifi: Still 802.11G, probably less than 10% chance of upgrading to N Bluetooth: Unchanged Screen Resolution: Unchanged, 320x480 portrait mode Screen Type: Possible OLED or Pixel Qi 3qi screen upgrade for improved readability and battery life Camera: I'd say about 50% chance of upgrade to 5MP. No flash. Maybe 720P video recording Battery Life: maybe 10-25% improvement due to improved components, in particular the screen... That's it. Nothing earth shaking, but a solid improvement over the 3GS. Apple does not make HUGE technological jumps at a time, they like to slowly and regularly improve their offerings. If you already own a 3GS, this will not likely be enough to upgrade. Just as many people didn't feel it was worth the jump from a 3G to a 3GS initially. Bookmark this post and check it out in 7 months to see how close I am
because verizon actually won in real survies and studies and they have permission to do it, while At&t LIES!
I think you'll be very wrong. VX pretty much already confirmed that the next generation iPhone will you use their 9th Generation processor. Which is dual core and capable of up to 2.0 Ghz. The newer iPod Touch has Wireless N, so that's a given for the next iPhone. I've been following Apple for a long while as well. And anytime someone actually makes a strong competitor that threatens Apple, (for example, the Creative Zen Vision MP3 Player back in 2005 or even the Palm Pre), Apple has a habit of blowing the competition out of the water in their next iteration. Android and even the Zune actually do provide serious competiton to Apple. So expect the next iPhone to atleast match them by offering up a high resolution OLED screen and many other upgrades.
We're each entitled to our opinion of course. Mine is based on the past history of Apple, and the model history of the iPhone. Each one is a small iterative step forward. That's almost the kiss of death then. Anytime someone starts blabbing about how their tech will be used in some upcoming Apple product before Apples says so, Steve Jobs drops them like a hot potato. Remember when ZFS was supposed to be added to Snow Leopard? Sun announced this fact, and then the feature was dropped. I'll grant that is true, but the iPod Touch does not have the additional cell radio to power. It's not a forgone conclusion that the iPhone will get N capabilities, they could opt for an ultra low power B/G radio. I do agree that OLED is a strong possible option, as mentioned in my previous post. I don't think that Apple sees the Zune or Android as a major threat... More like annoyances in the market to keep an eye on. For quite a few years iPods were less technically advanced than some other MP3 players on the market. They did well because of the clever interface, software, and iTunes / Music Store. Those same factors (and now the App Store) make the iPhone and iPod Touch rise way above the competition.
Does nobody else go on macrumors? They had something today about a 5mp camera for the next iphone http://www.macrumors.com/2009/12/23/next-generation-iphone-set-to-carry-5-megapixel-camera/
Heh, I used to read it daily before Arn launched TouchArcade... I usually read the stories once a week now. Funny coincidence there. Of course they point out how Omnivision was *wrong* when they claimed they were going to provide 3.2MP cameras for the Touch, Nano, and Classic. As we know, none of those happened, the Nano got a camera, but very low res and from a different source. I stick by my 50% chance of 5MP. Probably supplied by someone other than OmniVision Tech since they seem to like to shoot their mouth off a lot
Well the new rumor is that the iPhone 4G WILL be including a 5 megapixel camera that is capable of taking 1080p video at 30 FPS!! http://www.pmptoday.com/2009/12/23/4g-iphone-orders-5-mp-cmos-from-omnivision-for-2010/ There was another link I read earlier with the same rumor talking about how the camera is also capable of taking 1080p video, but I'm having trobule finding that link. Below is NOT that link btw... http://www.displayblog.com/2009/09/22/2010-iphone-5-megapixel-1080p-30fps-video-recording/
Here's three more links... The first one talks about 1080p video at 30 FPS as well... http://www.itproportal.com/portal/news/article/2009/12/24/apple-iphone-4g-sport-5-megapixel-camera/ http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/12/23/supplier_rumored_to_provide_5mp_iphone_camera_upgrade_in_2010.html http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/12/23/iphone_rumors/
i still call bull shit. unless your computer was built specifically for high quality videos, a standard computer can't handle 1080p, but you except me to believe a phone can handle it? ill believe it when i see it.
I think one limiting factor in the next iPhone making a 'giant' leap is the app store itself. I get the impression developers are having a hard time splitting the market between 2g,3g vs 3gs as is. If there was a big leap it would split the gap even further. With the iPhone being a phone first and a all-in-one fun system second, and the nature of the market, it can't take the same technology leap that traditional consoles and portable game systems can. Again, because the iPhone is a phone first, I think adding flash to the camera is a mistake. It would drain the battery so fast it would be almost useless. At least IMO.
it was made specifically for that. if an iphone (which already has pretty shitty battery life) is bringing in the ability to handle 1080p, apple better increase the battery life drastically.
