I love my ipod and psp. for longer games and long trips the psp is good for more complex games like syphon filter the ipod i like for smaller games like robot unicorn(which the song is still stuck in my head lol actually singing it to myself right now LOL)

I love the iPhone 4 but there's no denying that the 3DS is in another league when it comes to gaming. But that doesn't mean I will pickup a 3DS, I am just hoping for the day when similar tech comes to the iPhone. The 3DS is a real stunner you just have to see the thing in person.

you guys are basing your argument solely on graphics. or you're just arguing only about graphics. either way it's dumb.

I always felt that the iPT/iPhone doesn't compare with DS/PSP, gaming on the iPhone just feels so different. Yes there are good iPhone games with delicious graphics but even stuff like Gameloft's best..I mean sheesh they have an arrow telling you exactly where to go every second of the game for crying out loud.

Totally agree with you. I find stupid to use graphics as a way to demonstrate which system is "superior" to the other. That's one of the reasons I said a couple pages ago that I find hilarious when I see iFans talking about graphics.

There are many more important things when debating about the quality of something game related: game design, level of polish, level design, and more importantly, gameplay.

i think ive pretty much gone through every console since the mega drive, snes days to the current 360+kinect and ps3+move. and i personally believe that its actually quite unfair and a bit unrealistic to pit the iphone with all the other big boys in the market.

for one thing. sony, nintendo and microsoft has been in the gaming market for so long. and they have hardware that are designed specifically for gaming with big ass games companies that invest literally millions of dollars to develop their games. so yes. gaming wise the iphone 4 doesnt stand a chance but that doesnt actually make the device a piece of crap either.

the graphics on the iphone has set the standard for mobile phone gaming. i mean seriously, we've got some really kickass looking games on the iphone right now that's just running on an powervr sgx 535 gpu. that thing is old yet we're seeing a lot of new games with really kickass graphics coming out. that and we are seeing mobile phones with dual core tegra 2 chips that'll surely kick the graphics department up a notch. from what the numbers are saying it's current capable of processing more than 4 times the amount of stuff that can currently be done on the current iphone 4. in a sense the iphone has kick started a whole new dimension in mobile phone gaming. it's only going to get better.

next is for the fact that it's a smartphone. it does pretty much everything. and it does that pretty much everything part very well. it's also connected 24-7, and despite of being turned on most of the time the battery lasts as long if not longer than other current gen and upcoming handheld devices despite having a lot of things running in the background when you're playing games.

you cant really say that the nintendo ds was a gaming platform for serious gamers would you? seriously? it served its purpose with games aimed towards children/younger audience. the psp however catered towards the more hardcore gamers. the 3ds wants to go both ways. the iphone 4 however caters for gamers/non-gamers who are always on the move. and it does that perfectly. it also has some pretty great shooters/racers/rpg too for those who want something a little more serious but can be played in short bursts as well. so in a sense, in that particular market area for people like me, it is a perfectly awesome piece of gaming system.

Go play your '3DS'and PSP instead of posting in an Idevice forum for cripes sake OR Go get a girl or a boy whichever you prefer to help you pass the time since obviously you got too much of it.

The personal insults in this thread need to stop. I think you can figure out which two of you this is directed at most :))) but it goes for everyone. If you seriously feel the need to debate this ridiculous topic (for the bazillionth time) on a perfectly good Friday night, so be it.

Just don't go lobbing insults at one another while you do it or else I'll put people in time out, close the thread, call Nintendo and tell them to not release the 3DS because people are being meanies, and tell Steve Jobs to shut down the App Store.

I definitely have the power to do all these things. For realsies. :p

Atleast the iphone has better controls than the ds and psp when it comes to fps games. holding the ds with one hand and stylus with another is awkward. psp has only one analog stick which makes fps impossible without auto aim.

I agree with that. For me the iPhone has the best controls out of all the portable gaming devices. If the next generations of iPhones had physical controls like the PSP or DS (very unlikely), then I wouldn't buy it and I'd switch to Android or Windows Phone 7.

Even if that does happen, you'll still cover parts of it with your fingers, so what's the point?

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in to this thread.

I've been playing games my whole life, back to when the Atari 2600 was out. I had many systems including Atari 800, Commodore 64, Apple 2, NES, Genesis, Saturn, Lynx, Dreamcast, PS1, Xbox, DS, Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, PC/Mac gaming...

I must have purchased a thousand games for consoles. But ever since the App store, my gaming patterns have shifted dramatically. I do almost 100% of my gaming on my iPhone 4 or my iPad.

I know... it sounds crazy... but I just prefer to play iOS games these days.

One thing I hope happens is that more developers use the video capabilities.

I can't but to think that the iPad/iPod/iPhone would great a great portable gaming/console combo. For example, what if a game like Aralon used the video capabilities... you could play on your iPhone, level up your character, etc. Then if you want to plug it into your TV, you are now playing on a big screen and leveling up your same character. Some games already do this, like Max Adventure.

But I think it could be better...

Max Adventure lets you plug into the TV, sure... but you basically holding a Medusa of an iPhone with cables coming out of both sides. Chopper 2 goes one step further... I can plug my iPad into my TV, and use my iPhone 4 to wirelessly control the iPad which is plugged into the TV.

But you need two iOS devices to do that...

What if Apple came out with a Bluetooth game controller? Leave your iOS device plugged into your TV and use a more traditional game controller that developers can use as an alternative control scheme. Who knows, maybe the controller even has a touch screen in addition to analog/digital pads and buttons... maybe a controller design similar to the PSP/phone...

I just can't help to think about the opportunity Apple can have to not only be a great portable gaming device, but also a great console.

This is like saying laserdisc games looked better than SNES/Genisis games(YES sure, they look better, but...). When will people realize that Infinity Blade/RageHD level graphics aren't (realistically) feasable without the games being severely limited in content, control, and freedom; and even when they are Limited(eg rage and IB), they end up being extremely huge file-sizes, and on-rails to hide graphical tricks and quirks, and extremely small "games". The iOS pricing structure is the first reason we will never see "real" games at this graphical level, dunmping the money to make real games is scary on a system which EA controls with 99c games, the second is simply file size. Want Oblivion on your iphone with IB graphics? Be prepared to make space, and also be prepared for next to no one to download that 20GB behemoth. It's just ridiculous to think about.

And honestly Infinity Blade doesn't look better than wii games--there I said it, and I don't even own a Wii, or anything outside of my iphone4 for that matter. Saying it does is just ridiculous. It's not even well directed cinematically(even though it tries, with all those horrendous edits/camera angles).

sorry about the rant, but Aralon or RR2 are much better choices to show off the iOS's graphical capabilities, because they feel like real games, and not just demos/trailers/bullshots/laserdisc games. And unlike all the ports and gameloft games, they are at least somewhat original(hahaha, who am i kidding, one wants to be the next Forza/GT, the other wants to be the next Morrowind, but at least the developers were kind enough to give the games some identity of their own).

    //RANT.

And Yes the iPhone is critically underrated, if we could only start championing the original and good iOS titles, instead of the ports and copy-cats, other people outside of TA might start taking it seriously. The iOS has so many good games, original interesting, beautiful, games, that I find it in bad taste when people try to defend it by making lists full of ports and gameloft-copy-cats--We need to make a topic to understand just WHY iOS gamers can't even take the iOS seriously?-- Why do we constantly try to impress other gamers with lists of games like PVS, Chinatown Wars, Osmos, chuchu rocket, a "mario platformer", doom, monkey island, secret of mana, MC2, and Nova2? Am I the only one who sees a problem with this? I personally wouldn't be that impressed either as a console gamer, i played all those games on other systems(and in the case of the gameloft games, I played the real thing ages ago).

I totally agree with the other stuff you are saying though, I gave up other systems precisely because of the convenience of my iphone, and being able to log onto reddit and facebook, and the low priced/free games.

I really think Nintendo will be in for a real shock when the 3DS comes out because their market is basically the young kids market.

At the moment there is a shift in what the kids want for a handheld. For instance my nephew (he's around 10yo) is now constituently asking for an iPod because a lot of his friends have one. Parents are giving into this because games on the iOS are very cheap. The money to buy one handheld Nintendo game can buy many, many games on iOS.

The cheapest iPod is $229. Isn't the 3DS supposed to be at least that much?

I also read how Nintendo released a statement warning that young kids should not play since it could interfere with proper eye development. And games also cost much more on it I assume.

One thing that Nintendo has going for it are Mario and Pokemon. My kid is nuts for both. (although there is a glimmer of hope... he asked if he could get an iPod in a year if he helps out around the house a lot...)

Plus the parental advisory that the 3DS may damage a kids developing eye sight may have killed it. No good parent will buy that for their kids?

Couldn't disagree more. I find the iPod's touch screen to be pretty atrocious when it comes to FPS. I downloaded the first Nova, Eliminate and Battlefield just out of curiosity and wanted to cut my thumbs after 2 minutes of play. Incredibly frustrating, slow to turn, targeting is a bietch. Pass.

Now PSP and DS aren't great by any means, but with Prime Hunters on DS I didn't have problems, and targeting is infinitely more accurate because of the stylus.

Finally, FINALLY someone on these forums who gets it! Read to this post for those who have no clue when they talk about "iPhone graphics".
