iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads are becoming "real gaming devices" for big publishers so there were more big games on the App Store these last months than during the last 3 years... TA covered them and it's normal as they are interesting and polished titles. They covered too the most interesting indie games (and missed some but it's normal) but as everybody chooses thursday as the launch day, it's more easier to miss the indie games when there are 20 games featured the same day. The problem will be the same next year (and be worst if indies continue with the thursday thing) but I'm pretty sure there will be a huge place for the small teams on TA as they have the most interesting and unusual projects
If you really look at the list you would see that there are games from indies AND big devs like Square Enix and Pop Cap. But that aside, you clearly missed the point of the article which was a round up for people that just GOT an iPod or iPhone for Christmas. A year in review usually talks about stuff already talked about - you ever seen a news show with the year in review? Probably has headlines that you already heard about. Keyword: REVIEW. When you have a review for a test don't you go over what you learned already? Will you complain to the news station that has a year in review in the next few days and say - hey that were stuff we already heard about - or how about - why didn't you mention such and such instead? Or go to the teacher and tell them they are reviewing stuff you already know? Come on now. Why on earth would you create such a thread? I value the opinions of the staff here and have been steered in the right direction more times than not. The thing is - it is an opinion - it isn't fact. If you don't like the front page opinions then you don't belong here. There is definitely no need to whine in a thread about it. Kudos Eli and Company for all the work you do.
What a crock. Who are you to say who belongs here? Nobody needs your permission. Expressing your opinion about a front page article is not whining, writing a negative review of Lara Croft is not whining, nor is disagreeing with that review whining. Stuff it.
Clearly missed the point of my post. Taking a statement out of context never helps understand either.
Why is everybody hating on the list. If you don't like it, don't buy anything from it. I think the guide is for people who are relatively new to iOS gaming. I'm pretty sure that the senior members on this site don't need a guide to know what to buy.
Ha well I'll skip on your silly sentence I quoted in post above and will answer after all. So when you got an iPad or an iPhone you are necessarily a young kid? You completely miss the point, newcomers will generally have a large experience before, not all but quite many. Even some consoles have indie games and I won't mention PC and Mac. Well good point, valid in general, not fully in my case because I didn't read TA during the first 5 month, still a good point and yes in general there's few hope to discover anything though a buying guide of a site you check too often.
I already answered to New England Gamer about this first point, new to iOS gaming ok, new to gaming not at all. Well I do disagree it's just impossible to have notice all the very interesting games of the year. But like New England Gamer highlighted, such guide on a site can only come from reviews published on the site, hence people checking it enough often will already have quote all from this site.
If you guys spent a week on that list, you really need to read "Getting things done" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getting_Things_Done Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year !
The issue is - way too many games on that list aren't top games in their respective categories (, way too many great games are ignored, and the list is badly structured (Fastar = platformer ? LEGO HP and Infinity Blade = RPG ? Monkey Island = strategy ??? etc) and unrepresentative of the "best of 2010". Newcomers might be put off by some of the choices, IMHO several are really overhyped or just plain weak games (Fruit Ninja, The Incident, Osmos, Archetype, Cubed Rally Racer, Zen Bound 2, X2 Soccer, X2 Snowboarding, Sketch Nation Shooter)
This is the process we went through: Last week I sent out an email to my TouchArcade cohorts, asking to brainstorm lists of everything they thought was noteworthy for the year. This resulted in a ridiculous amount of games which I then: -Redownloaded and installed on my device. -Played through them a bit to see if the game in question is still something that seems cool compared to recent releases. Repeat 200+ times, if the game is good: -Reread our review, to make sure they're still relevant and don't include any weird time sensitive stuff that would make them. -Edit anything that reads weird if your first exposure to the game is that review from what could have been months ago. -Look up iTunes links for not only the game in question, but also any associated lite or HD version as well. -Format all of these links with icon in addition to review links and any relevant forum threads. -Write brief description of game. Repeat 43 times. If you can do that in an hour, I'd love to know how. Again, if you don't think the games we selected are the "best" that's cool, but they're the ones we liked, and what I'd recommend to friends of mine. You're free to disagree, but attempting to discredit us by being like "hurf blurf could have done that in an hour" is just stupid.
LOL, looks like I removed too late that "looks like it was done in an hour" snicker. But I removed it before you overreacted - after rereading it I realized it's too much. Sorry for the trouble, I'll be more careful from now on. Anyway, the whole process seems needlessly overcomplicated - and you still managed to leave a lot of great games out of your list (Galaxy on Fire 2, Spiderman Total Mayhem, FIFA, Samurai 2, Nova 2, Trainyard, Modern Combat 2) while also building a not-so-structured list (see my previous post). Having a "top three" for every game genre would have been easier to do and more productive - maybe even broken into "big boys" and "indie" something like: Racing Big Boys = Real Racing 2, Reckless Racing, NFS Hot Pursuit Indie = Chalkboard Stunts, Doodle Kart, Uber Racer Sandstorm Point & Click Adventures Big Boys = Monkey Island 2, Phoenix Wright, Puzzle Agent Indie = Hector Badge of Carnage, Scarlett & the Spark of Life, The Secret of Grisly Manor etc.
really?? Honestly Iam suprised this thread is still going. If anyone thinks the list is bad , simply start a thread with your own list. When asked to do this , the people who complain are to scared to make a full list buyers guide themselves. Go ahead and complain , but a least show us your list , so we can complain about your top picks. Its easy to give heat , but can you take it.
Krehol is pointlessly irritated but he seems used to this , but he isn't totally wrong, beside complain, why not come help here: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=78618
It's called "constructive criticism", not heat Racing Big Studios = Real Racing 2, Reckless Racing, NFS Hot Pursuit Indies = Chalkboard Stunts, Doodle Kart, Uber Racer Sandstorm Point & Click Adventures Big Studios = Monkey Island 2, Phoenix Wright, Puzzle Agent Indies = Hector Badge of Carnage, Scarlett & the Spark of Life, The Secret of Grisly Manor RPG Big Studios = Chaos Rings, Puzzle Quest 2, Dungeon Hunter 2 Indies = 100 Rogues, Avalon, Solomon's Boneyard Puzzles (The "big studios"/"indies" difference is irrelevant here, I'll just list my top 6 instead) Cut The Rope, Trainyard, Piyo Blocks 2, BlocksMania, Fragger, Psychoban FPS Big Studios = Modern Combat 2, NOVA 2, RAGE Indies = Archetype Action Big Studios = Infinity Blade, Spiderman Total Mayhem, GTA Chinatown Wars Indies = Space Miner Space Ore Bust, Samurai 2 Vengeance, Knight's Rush Strategy (The "big studios"/"indies" difference is irrelevant here, I'll just list my top 6 instead) Plants vs Zombies, Game Dev Story, Sentinel 3, Highborne, SteamBirds, Dark Lords Boardgames (The "big studios"/"indies" difference is irrelevant here, I'll just list my top 6 instead) Carcassonne, Words With Friends, Neuroshima Hex, Small World, Through the Desert, Zooloretto (not sure if it's the 2010 crop, though) Sports Big Studios = FIFA 11, Let's Golf! 2, Championship Manager 2011 (haven't played this year's Madden) Indies = Flick Golf, Bonecruncher Soccer, Baseball Superstars 2011 Best of the rest Big Studios =LEGO Harry Potter, Galaxy On Fire 2, Mushihimesama Indies = Dark Nebula 2, Sword & Poker 2, They Need To Be Fed (obvious) Note: I only added games I have played.
