That could cause it. When I read through, it sounded like a lot of people had trouble when playing a cross-updated game.

On another note: I just found a silver orb and searched the thread for what they do. From what I was able to find, apparently they're very useful, but I still have no idea what they do. ;)

    Anyone have ideas?

P.S. - I also got a Dragon's Eye. And not sure on that one either. Hah.

Hey Wielder, thanks for the compliments... glad you're enjoying the game. Did you notice the text that appears when you received the Dragon's Eye? It sort of gives you a hint. ;) And the Silver Orb absorbs darkness, so yes it is rather useful!

bluewomble88, that's a good idea, one we're working towards. We'd like to show the stats and buffs for the character in some useful and unobtrusive way. So, I'll try to accelerate this feature since it is getting pretty important with all the stuff that's in the game now.

BeefJerky, can you remember if you have any equipment, and what it was/is? Of course the game *should* never crash, but there's always something that gets missed. I will take a look.

Is spiked shield or war shield better?

I'm really not sure. :) It's hard to define "better" with the shields as they all offer something different. War shield is a metal shield, but much tougher than a regular metal shield. Spiked shield causes damage to monsters when they strike it. So, take your pick. :)

The thing about rogues is: you use things and learn (and die trying). You're not committed to this one shield for the next 50 years. If it comes to swapping one for the other? Go with your gut, bro! It ain't gonna kill ya (in RL).

It might kill you if you don't stop playing and then get deep-vein thrombosis leading to blood clots that travels to your heart and brain and causes a stroke and/or pulmanary embolism and you die.

But otherwise, yeah, it's pretty safe. So just pick one.

It may or may not attract Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

We're on the same page, Mr MadGarden. ps, do you have a mad garden? It'd be pretty damn mad. If it's a garden. Or a lawn?

ps do you have a centipede problem?

  10. Oh, I get it. Enemy attacks disappear into her cleavage. Clever.

    Hi Madgarden,
Most of my equipment is pretty standard (a lvl 20 character so plenty of it) but I do have two Dragons Eyes and a black orb. I also picked up an amulet but it had started crashing before that. Not sure if I had anything else of note and can't access it to check. It's looking like I'll have to start a new game.

Hmm, really sorry to hear that. Don't delete the character... I am adding some additional checks to try and prevent these sorts of situations, so if I manage to catch your problem you will be able to continue using your dude. Then perhaps I can get some further feedback from you.

Thanks, I won't delete him. I think I also had a bunch of wands too, most of the usual fireballs and striking but I picked up a whole bunch before the first crash and wonder now if there was one I didn't recognise in there. I should have been paying more attention.

Well, I'll keep the character active while I start a new game in another slot and, if anything turns up or you want me to give you more info, please let me know. Thanks.

Still loving the game, even with this once-off frustration.

Can the wands level up? I only ask because I'm down to floor 15 and the wand of striking only takes off about 12 hit point on a strong enemy making it a bit pointless.

Also, can I suggest that the context sensitive button in the top-right corner drops down during battle so you're only one click away from casting a shield or healing etc. In other words, take the last 3 things cast/used and display them down the screen on the right during a fight.

EDIT: Can I just say the centipede lairs and vaults are GENIUS!

The wands don't level up. I'll be adding more wands though. Overall I think that everyone gets too beefy at the lower levels, so I may adjust that. Going from 10 HP at level 1 to 300 HP at level 20 seems a bit much. If you figure realistically, a human could go from total soft weakling to 10x the strength and toughness. Like going from 50lb bench-press to 500lbs, akin to 10HP - 100HP. Very possible. However, going from 50lb to 1500lb is a bit unrealistic. Anyway, something I'm thinking about. ;)

We've discussed that drop-down icon thing internally quite a bit in the past, and decided against it in favour of the simple consistency of the 1-button approach. It's actually better to open the menu and pick an item during battle, as it slows the battle down quite a bit so you have some time to think... with 3 buttons, it might be a bit twitchy trying to decide what to do. Still, I'll bring the topic up again.

And glad you like the centipedes. ;) I think I'll squeeze in some new and unique crawlies for the next update.

  16. Let's not go making it too much harder here. I think there's a good thing going between adding items and balancing them with new nasties. Throwing character stats into the mix can easily tip things too far the other way. I'm already finding things getting pretty challenging down on 16 with what I've got -- and I attribute my survival so far to the temple shield; without that I'm certain I'd be having a pretty tough time of it even on hero mode.

Winning on Squire isn't winning ;)
This is more like cheating :)

Mindfield, And as bluewobblez said, the wand of striking starts getting useless, because everything is too beefy. I suppose that's OK to an extent, but it can also be irritating to feel like you're not having any appreciable effect after 5 shots. So, just stuff to consider... basically scaling back the HP of *everything* so that the damage amounts can be more normalized (not just the hero).

robot, aw come on... it's all about the baby steps! The fact that people want to play again after finishing it is the important bit. :) So with this sort of feedback, I can try to make sure that their next time through on a new level really feels like a new experience.

Aww, for those of us who weren't born gamers, even "easy" levels are a challenge and fun. Playing as Squire and Hero works fine for me and I'm delighted that Paul made the game to accommodate everyone, even those who aren't looking for leader board fame. I sure do admire those who beat it on Legend, but so what if some of us don't or just choose to work our way up gradually. I expect it's in the devs' best interest to invite a wide audience.
