Doffie, how about secret rooms? Have you found many in your travels? If not... there's tonnes of stash for you to collect yet! And good stash at that... like enchant spells, light spells and such. Light spells can be used for stunning the enemies! So there's lots you can do yet.

As for getting lots of potions etc... if you can kill the guys quick enough, like the elves, monks etc. so they don't drink the potion, then you'll get it. So maybe even climb higher, go for some real wimps and jack their stuff. ;) If you can find some wimpy warlords and steal some strength potions too, that works.

Okay I'm officially in love with this game, and I feel like I'm only just scratching the surface, considering I haven't completed it in any mode yet. But the more I play it and learn the little secrets, the more I like it. Topped off with a fantastically active dev, both in terms of the forums and adding content to the game... This has shot straight into my top 5 favourite games. I just feel silly for putting off buying it for so long now :D

Anyway, I seem to be on an amazingly lucky run in Hero mode at the moment, I'm level 12 and have a +20 sword and 9 magic bags! That's pretty unusual right?

    Cool Electric Shaman. :D

Hm, +20 seems pretty good for level 12, yeah. What floor are you on? 9 bags... you barely need more than that I think. There was this one guy, legends tell of... he went by the name of "Sixty Sacks." Not a pretty picture. ;)

  4. Pssh. You're talking to Lord Sixty Sacks here. Of course, I earned that nickname before the update when sacks (and for that matter enchant scrolls) were more plentiful, but they're still common enough to score an average of maybe one per level, or near enough. You've found a couple more enchant scrolls than I did at 12 though, but the law of averages generally balances everything out.

Glad you've joined the club though. It really is a great game, and I don't think anyone who's bought and played it has ever had an unkind thing to say about it. (Bugs notwithstanding) Only suggestions to make it even better, and Paul's got more than enough surprises up his own sleeve to keep improving it. It's one of those games you just don't get rid of because you know you'll always have the urge to play it.

EDIT: Ah, I see Paul is telling of my legend already. :)

Uh well I went a bit crazy and decided to try and rush the sword from floor 14 or so, as I had a whole bunch of spells and potions saved up... but this has proven to be a very bad idea, I managed to fall down several holes in quick succession and ended up on floor 27 as a poor wee level 14.
But I've managed to scrape my way back up to floor 23 now, the sword is within reach once more! Spell shields have pretty much saved my life, along with invisibility and of course teleport. The plus side is I managed to find a map down there that should be mighty useful soon :D
I also found a map to Floor 1

edit: I got to the sword and made it out alive! Not without a few hiccups on the way out of course :D

Cool! What, is my maze guardian just a huge pushover or something? Heh. ;) So how did your return trip go?

  7. Maze guardian?

    Oh crap.

Congrats! Now do it on Legend.

I haven't found many secret rooms. Thought I was being compulsive, but apparently not compulsive enough. Boy, do I like getting tips though.

I think my husband might divorce me because of Fargoal-obsession. Got any advice, guys?

    Get a new husband?

  10. Give it to him to play. And I hope you have more than one iDevice.

Heh well when I saw him/it I did take 2 strength and 1 agility potion before the fight :)

And the return trip was pretty hard, mainly because an assassin decided to steal the sword, teleport, and run down to floor 21. But I managed to get him in the end. Once I got past floor 12 or so it was fairly straight forward.

By the time I escaped the dungeon I was level 19, all those high level creatures gave me tons of XP.
You might want to consider nerfing the spell shield a little though, it meant that because I had so many weapon enchantments, I could throw one on before a fight and have a good chance of killing most enemies, it deducts so much damage. It might have also been because I just had loads of them saved up (just under 40 when I fell down to floor 27, think I had around 20 left once I had the sword)

I'm going to start a quest on Legend now, but think I'll probably have to run through the game on Hero a few more times till I get a better grip on what all the items do. Still don't know what those crystals scattered around the dungeon are for... or maybe they're just like tables...

  12. They're just decoration; they provide ambient light. But wouldn't it be cool if they could be used tactically? Y'know, maybe if you fired a wand at it, it would multiply and reflect the shot around the room, potentially turfing nearby enemies?

    Y'know, just sayin'...

Aww that's a shame, I was kinda looking forward to finally figuring out what those were for. But as you say, always room for something to be implemented to make them useful. Although ambient light seems kinda important in Legend mode, so not totally worthless I guess. Not like tables :D

Also, came across a weird bug whilst making a new game, the game keeps crashing after about 2 minutes of play. I tried resetting right after the first time it happened, but didn't seem to do anything, tried twice more before making a new game, and this one seems to work fine (have gotten down to floor 2 at least).
Not a huge problem, just a little annoying because I got 15HP and 14 skill as my starting stats on that file :p

Yeah, there are definitely plans for the braziers, crystals, cisterns, etc. All in good time! And 40 shield spells sucks, really. Heh. I've been thinking about how to balance out the number of items a bit better... perhaps carry limits, or just having less of them. Legend is definitely harder though, as the humans use the items more often themselves. Anyway, time to hit the original C64 BASIC code again and see how far off I've strayed from the hardcore formula. ;)

I've had a few reports of crashes like that, too. Not sure what it is at this point, but I'll keep digging.

  15. Have fewer of them. Carry limits suck. They're realistic, but they suck. You end up trying to keep this map in the back if your head of where you left items you couldn't carry any more of just in case you need to backtrack to retrieve them at some point -- and then of course you have to spend all that time backtracking when you do. It interrupts the flow, and it sets arbitrary limits. Having fewer of them is just easier to manage (change one chance variable and you're done) and you can just keep on plowing through without having to go back for anything.

    Except the sword, that is.

Dollars to donuts the crash bug either a pointer to oblivion, or a leak somewhere. Naughty developer not freeing his mallocs. :)

Yeah, carry limits do suck... it is a game after all. Should be fun, not tedious. So, I'll do some more balancing while making it exciting AT THE SAME TIME. Actually I have other stuff in mind too that will send all of the excessive magic use for a loop. ;)

Hah! Yes, it's probably a pointer issue. No leak. We hardly malloc any memory at all, and especially not at runtime. I was raised as an embedded programmer. ;)

Woo, just working on some optimizations now. Have knocked down a few things that *should* make everything run smoother, as well as increase battery life. My apologies to your husband, Doffie. ;)

    Dare I Ask?

Are you close to submitting the iPad version?

This is going to be one of the best Saturdays ever; my iPad is sitting in a warehouse here in CT. Sitting. Apple is soooo Apple.

Some guy suggested maybe he should just give Apple his credit card and tell them to simply send him every new device as soon as it's introduced. 'Fraid I'm just like that guy.

bluewomble88... I'm sorry to say, but there will be no more updates to Sword of Fargoal for the forseeable future. It's been a blast working on the game and I've enjoyed everyone's feedback. I wish you all the best.
