Et tu Madgarden? Eh, if it keeps the updates coming, sure, I'll pay. But you'd better remember who's been good to you.
I'll gladly pay for a sequel as I've already had way more than my money's worth out of the first game.
I would definitely buy Fargoal 2, even though I anticipated a free update. Knowing the amount of work you've put in and the massiveness of the new content, it's absolutely worth my money. I figure true fans will buy it regardless, and the people who refuse are probably the people who wouldn't have purchased the IAP anyways. It won't be the best PR move, but you need to get paid for your work. Perhaps to appease those expecting the update you could incorporate a few elements of Fargoal 2 into the current game? Kind of like a preview for the whole thing? Might also get more people to buy it by whetting their appetites. Though I have no idea how much effort that would be on your part.
I think there's still a chance we can surprise everyone with what we will do regarding this 2.0 launch, and the existing Fargoal 1.x version. Stay tuned.
I would gladly pay for Fargoal 2. If you even have an intro sale, more the better! A lot of people got fargoal when it went for free, so I think only super duper childish whinners will give a hard time. Though if it does go on sale as a separate app, I wonder how the IAP's will go. I think the IAP's for solomon's boneyard and keep were successful (at least I hope they were) because the updates were free and the purchases really added to an already cool game. In other words, the IAPs added extra shelf life/more depth. Since most already had the game (at least of those who were going to get it), and in fact i think they are both given away now for free, that leaves extra money left over in the pockets of consumers to spend on the IAPs. I can tell already that if you sell fargoal 2 as a separate app, and have extra content only unlockable through IAPs (such as additional characters or some other game changing element) I know a lot of people will shit a brick because when they buy a new game they want the WHOLE game, not just an intro to IAPs. I dont know where I stand on this. I want to compensate madgarden for his hard work, yet I am always reluctant to buy a new game that pretty much requires IAPs. So how this plays out will be interesting. OOOHHHH!!!! Brainstorm!!!! And I know other games have done this as well. You can have 2 versions of Fargoal 2. One of them the free update, that provides the extra content as IAPs, and a separate PREMIUM fargoal 2 with all the IAPs unlocked, with an obviously higher price. while this may lead to some confusion, since this style of price tiering is rather common on the app store, only the real dunces will get confused.
From what Madgarden has posted, it sounds like Fargoal 2 is the complete experience. The IAPs seem to be fun extras - not full-on content, if you know what I mean. If that's the case, I don't think anyone will feel like they're missing out. But fans can buy them for something on top of the usual experience. Also, your sword can only do 4 hits before it breaks and you have to either wait two real time days for it to repair or pay 4.99 as an IAP to repair it instantly. That may be a lie I made up.
Heh... yeah, the "basic" no-IAP Fargoal 2 is still just as complete as Fargoal 1 is, with all of the extra new stuff. So the IAP is for all of the extra coolness you can unlock. Really, it's your standard current IAP mechanism, won't be unfamiliar to anyone. Also:
Well hang on a minute! I'm not sure I'm ready yet to let go of my own head. I'm rather attached to the round thing, even know it could use a good shampooing right now. Can't we compromise? How about my pinkie, would that do? I hardly use the stupid thing and I don't think I'll ever get the hang of the touch-typing method.
291 pages on this thread. I'd say there's lots of folks wishing you well. (And looking forward to the update. It'll be done when it's done.)
I believe it should be a whole new app, since it'll be much easier to drum up publicity. I'd 100% buy this new version the day it's released (assuming it's universal). I'd say that if you are going this way _and_ adding IAP, the base app shouldn't be too pricey. This is also a good model for publicity, since people are much more likely to impulse buy a game that's under $2 (anything above that and people will wait for the inevitable sale / free giveaway). The more people who buy the app, the more people will also pay for the IAP features.
