What's going on PixelPower you see to be churning 'stuff' out by the bucketload without applying any polish at all. Somewhere in this thread you showed signs of a good 'apprentice' but I'm failing to see it anymore. Not even amused anymore.

    Where is the polish?

I read your post PixelPower about the twitter stuff and I decided to check up on your app and see how that helped in its rankings. Strangely your ranking are non-existent. I used App Annie to search for you highest ever ranking and grossing rankings for the Bird app if you want see what I am basing the comment on.

Truth is a game like your Bird app could do well given that Tiny Wings just updated and that style of app seems to be doing well over all. But you are seriously lacking polish.

Before you go off the deep end I am writing this to help you understand the importance of polish. So some examples follow from your Bird app screen shots.

    1. There are at least 3 different art styles intermixed in the game play screen. That looks and feels like hobbled together more than anything else. Get a pissy reviewer at apple and they reject for that alone. I personally like people that do hand drawn style graphics like your bird. But if you are going that way then go all the way and hand draw all the elements so they are in the same art style. I think the coin and clouds are from OpenClipArt.org or some such clip art site.

    2. Really need to consider your font, but remember using the same font everywhere is very important. Font is like hand writing. If it sucks then it does not matter what it is conveying people stopped caring already.

    3. Your main menu screams about using consistent font size. Either use the same smaller font on all buttons or use buttons big enough to use the larger font on on all three.

    4. You have a screen shot with 3 icons from other games integrated into it. How that got pass App Review beats me. Why? You do not own the icon and in the case of Angry Birds icon they have copyright on the imagery for sure without question. Save yourself the chance of legal action and avoid stuff like that. You are not listed as an INC or LLC on the App Store so be aware then in any legal action that all your personal stuff is at risk. If you don't have the "corporate veil" to protect your personal stuff don't be stupid use images that have copyright protection.

I was like you and could not draw to save my life. Then WeHeartGames from twitter suggested the following site and I took the time to learn Inkscape and do several of the tutorials. The end result is far better art than I ever had done. I really suggest you take the time to read all the site. SpriteAttack does the tutorials on the site and is frankly one of the better freelance game artist I have worked with. I am now using his art in 2 released games and the current in development game.

Your don't give up attitude is a blessing. Just need to work on skills and polishing your games. Took 15 apps to have a big success app for us but I learned every step of the way and I can tell you polish sells games.

    Remember these rules:
Your Icon must say "Buy Me, Love Me, You Must Have Me" as it is the first thing people see about your game. If you have twitter post your icons during development and get feedback. Some apps go through 50+ icons before finding the perfect one to release with. Oh and check the pre-rendered icon box in Xcode so that the shinny part at the top of the icon does not show up in App Store and on device.

The first screen shot has to be of game play and it has to say "Wow this is awesome fun!" since that is the screen shot that people can see straight away when they click through to your app in the app store.

Hope you learn something from this.

Ok I just had to see how hard your bird would be to do in Inkscape.

Here is my 15 minute bird using Inkscape and the methods I learned from SpriteAttack's tutorials on game art.

Really 2 birds 1 coin and 1 cloud done as vector art all in the same style is at most a day of your time. Add in the buttons and really you are at two days on the outside to update all your art to the same style.

Yes I put a copyright notice on it. Deal with it.

I did this as an example of how polished art is not that hard to achieve using the right tools. Inkscape is free on all OS's and the tutorials are free as well. It is just your time and it would be time well spent.

Thanks alot on the feedback guys, I know I still have a long way to go. I began doing casual style games to challenge myself of making a game with one touch controls and still make it fun to play for those who like simple games. It might seem like I just released alot of games all at once but its not me the reviewer decided to review all games I had within days of each other but they been waiting for 10+ each before each review and all of a sudden they got reviewed close together.
I do tend to go back to my original plan of making just gamer type games like mario types, contra types, link types ,and castlevania type games. The beautiful bird didnt do well, danger runner was a game I made because of inspiration of canabalt, and feed the dog is actually an original game much better than the 1st 2 games I made. I have improved on the art but I still have a long way to go, but I will get there.
Even you you dont see it , everything Iam doing is going according to plan for the future. Since 4 weeks ago , I been up many nights with lack of sleep studing from year 1 to now in the iphone marketplace. I have noticed things that arent in any forum, but throught the history of appstore. I know the goal I have and I figured out how I will get there. Its not a quick 1 game plan, but a full body of work that wont be revealed in one day but over time. My games will get deeper and have more features better artwork etc.
I thank you all for helping me out and when I reach where I want to reach, I will show you blueprint style everything I did and why I did it. You might think I sound crazy right now, but it will all make sense in the future. Enjoy the next couple of month's will me, its going to be a fun and exciting ride!!! I love you guys!!:)

the more i read this thread - the more i go back to the first statement you made (original post):

but seriously; did you learn anything while working for those two small companies?

as other people have mentioned, you have zero consistency with your style (art, fonts, menus et al) which makes it look very amateurish. just by looking at the graphics, i would need to hear other people saying there is something positive about the game before i even download it. i mean, i know what it is like to be a programmer with no art skills - there can be some awesome code underneath all that.

but seriously; stop churning out junk. connect with an artist, get them to do some consistency, color schemes and polish to your titles. there are a bunch of websites you can use to find different type of people, see some examples of their work and even come to a reasonable agreement of some form. however, do note that if you want good people, sell yourself as professional and offer an upfront payment.

i did that with caveman - you can see the "polish" factor can help sales

(5 stars) This is a wonderful reincarnation of a 90's classic. (5 stars) Great re-imaging of a childhood favourite - Lemmings. LETS GO! ... OH NO! (or.. YIPEE!) Caveman is a game where the goal is to guide Cavemen to the exit on the level. :: GAME PLAY Cavemen enter the level through an open hatch and walk aimlessly to their death or around in circles following the path outlined - specific skills can be assigned to Cavemen to create a new path and help guide the others to the designated exit. The following skill sets are available: - CLIMBER: scale those walls - FLOATER: float down to safety - EXPLODER: pop! - BLOCKER: block the path - BUILDER: build a bridge - BASHER: bash a horizontal path - MINER: mine a diagonal path - DIGGER: dig a vertical path Each level has a set of requirements to complete where a combination of skillsets may need to be used to solve the level - there is more than one solution available; how many cavemen can you save! With four difficulty levels (easy, medium, obscure, insane) and 120 levels + hidden bonus levels - this game is guaranteed to bring you hours of enjoyment and gaming addiction! :: OPTIONS A number of game play options exist to customize the game play to individual preference; assignment of tools can be via clicking on the caveman, clicking on the toolbar or both. The game resumes play on touch by default but this can be disabled under the options screen. :: SOLUTIONS Mobile 1UP has worked very hard to ensure that all levels are solvable; a complete set of solution guides for every level are available on the Mobile 1UP website (high definition video and detailed walk throughts) - of course the challenge is being able to solve them on your own! :: TIMEWARP A special "unlock feature" has been provided where unlocked levels can be accessed via a special code; in addition to revealing special secrets of the game engine (easter eggs) - a complete list of the relevant unlock codes are available on the Mobile 1UP website. Some codes change on a daily basis - so be sure to visit often to find all the goodies that are available! :: CREDITS Caveman is a game inspired by the classic Lemmings developed by Psygnosis released for Amiga, DOS, et al in 1991. The project started as a port of the game, but due to intellectual property concerns the game was given a new set of graphics, audio and some custom levels to bring the game genre up to the standards expected by gamers in this era. The game was developed by Aaron Ardiri, the graphics provided by Tomas Miller, and the sounds were provided by Michael McGee.

Dear mods, please can I have one of these super-no-nails-stickies too! And like 17k views woot. Love you guys ;-) Hey Brad I've demoted my virtual controls to non-default. Great podcast... ;-)

@PP checkout a game called RSSS and note stuff about it. Mainly that it's really funny, also that they kinda made a happy accident...there's just something in that game that I find acceptable, over lesser efforts. I particularly loved one of the reviews which just had to make me download, said something like "Dev, what are you on?" lmao. Disclaimer: I have no idea who made RSSS but it seems free so worth a giggle.

Also PP, I think a great idea would be for you to work on an avatar. Maybe then you can extend this extra effort to updating your other games. You can see that we all respect effort, but only if there is a huge amount put in! Or like RSSS you draw the line at a good place.

EDIT: just realised that free game only comes up in search with full name (realistic sports simulation...). Also it is free but I see it has an IAP (which I doubt will buy now that I've done my bit this way!

Damn that movie isnt even that big , sounds like a money grab. You should just change the main charactor a bit and the name of the game. In the end you probably have to do it anyway, relatives are usual more greedy than the original person who made the movie.

I say this the game really looks like pokemon. I hope apple approves the game but latetly Apple has been stricter in letting games through that look even remotely close to another IP. After the temple jump incident , Apple has been pretty tough. In the past though Apple used to let almost anything in but not anymore. With that said lets pray cause I been waiting a long time for this game.

On Toucharcade alot of developers are judgemental sometimes to the extreme of each other. There are new developers who never went to school to learn how to program and are learning on thier on time. To a developer who has had 3-4 years or more exp, they might say oh they are releasing crap but honestly the newer developer might not be able to program everything that he wants to in his game. Also unless you know objective C , you most likely use a game development tool that has limitations leading to cutting out of certain features in your game or app.

To end this what one person might think is crap , another person thinks is gold. I remember 2 years ago I downloaded doodle jump because of all hype surrounding it , even though I didnt really like the look of it from screenshots. I downloaded it and played it and thought this is a piece of garbage. Yet it didn't matter what I thought , once the game reached the top of the charts its considered the best game ever even by toucharcade.

Golden rule in most people's eye's if your game blows up, its the best game ever. If it doesnt blow up , they find a million things you could have fixed to make it better. Welcome to the appstore lottery store !!

One example or even 5 doesnt make the googleplay store equal to or better than appstore. Since the begining and in the future in general you will find more success on the appstore than googlepay store. Of course if you can release on both , do so and collect all the cash. Appstore will still be the premium and premier spot to sell mobile games.

I dont know for sure but Iam 99% certain they used Triple Point PR. Thats probably the best PR services out right now , but they charge $8000 . But in the event that they feel they can really make money on your game, they will do profit share but your game has to be really good.

I would say even with love a game might not make it also. I made a game just using my humorous, funny side its actually free right now. It didnt do well but I knew either people would get it or they wont. Here is the link its free so try it out
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/feed-me-bones/id547116005?mt=8

I really wanted to update but for now it isnt worth it if not alot of people get the game. Iam hoping by some magic it would blow-up and be call one of the funniest iphone games, but right now its just in the crap pile. Just keep at it and hopefully you will make it .

Trust me dont write the letter and dont bash apple if you are a developer. There are apple reps even in forums like this and believe me it will be reported. I found out the hard way just stay patience. I hope you make millions, cause I know how hard it is to code a Pokemon style game its super hard.

The appstore is hit or miss unless you have the tools to make 3D graphics and gameplay. It takes a certian level of graphics to guarentee making money. Yes gameplay has its advantages but most gamers look at graphics 1st then gameplay.
Also the only way to guarentee a long tail , making sales past 6 months is to have deep gameplay. So those 2 factors are needed for success, say want you want about gameloft, they nailed those 2items more often than not.
But if you dont have one of those 2 then you fail unless you get lucky. As far as consoles I used to play NDS all the time and iPhone hasnt changed my mind. Hardest part Iam really scared to put alot of time and effort just to fail or get rejected. I do have a game lined up in the future that Iam putting some hard effort towards and hope it sell better.

Ok this is at the writer not Rubicon(he is awesome)

Ok the iphone is a phone, internet browser, productivity apps for buisness, and gaming device. There is no way to compare the 2 at all in terms of gaming console. Look I love the iphone platform ,its super innovative but Iam not fan boyish either like the writer of the articule. I cant understand why people are so quick to jump on and off bandwagons so easily.
Nintendo, sony, and microsoft all had up's and down's like any company. The whole economy globally is bad and people dont have money like they used to. So of course right now people dont have money so they are looking for the cheaper alternative which iphone is the master of right now. I played video games since the begining , and iphone is just an average system compared to consoles. The 99 price has made it huge as far as selling units but in a normal economic situation , console companies make far more.
I cant for the life of me understand how writers who have been in the industry for 20 plus years jump on whats popular right now. I look at how consistant a company has been and how much success they inspire others to have. If someone clones a mario game really good, they will make money on the appstore, if someone clones angry birds, it will hardly show up on the radar. Same goes for tiny wings or canabalt , they are both successful but arent powerful enough to inspire more of it.
I love the iphone/ipad/ipod touch as much as anyone here but we have to have a sense of commonsense. Jumping on bandwagon's and trends as they come is a recipe for disaster. Politically you already see how we are suffering because of that mentality, lets not make the same mistakes gaming wise. Have some respect for those console companies, they didnt get to the point they are because they were stupid.
