I'm looking to buy my first final fantasy ever. I've looked it up, and from the five apparently four is the best. Opinions?

That's my opinion. They really are all good games. Each having it's own merits. If you're looking to try just 1, I'd suggest 4.

Not good. No story. Just battles. Linear character upgrades with no variety or choice.
Spectral Souls and Blazing Souls are the next best thing after FFT.
If your next question is are they as good, the answer is no. They are the closest you'll get though.

I'm assuming Chaos Rings II at £2.49 is a no-brainer?

Thank you! I almost bit on the Rebirth games, glad I didn't.
I'll quit dithering now and buy WotL and FFIV.

Pointless, off-topic, first-time poster post leads me to believe you are some kind of ethereal savant, wandering aimlessly through the world wide web with the purpose to disturb peace and rock the balance of the norm in this virtual community of gentlemen and ladies.

    A bot perhaps? :D

I started playing FF III & IV this time last year for the first time (first time that I had a device that had the FF titles). If I were to choose between them, like Nobunaga, I'd plump for IV. What you lose with IV lacking the job system, you easily make up in terms of narrative, adult themes (regret, loss, love and redemption), memorable characters and a good balance between humour and pathos.

I prefer the musical score of III. 4 is none too shabby, with some evocative, well-fitting musical pieces - just not as good as III.

The random battles that seem to occur every time that you move more than 2 paces, can drive you to despair. I found III a lot worse than IV, in this regard.

I'm in a minority but I like the 3D chibi character models.

Say goodbye to at least 30 hours+ of your life!

Query: I have FF Dimensions and yet to play it. Should I get FFV then?

People ask which Final Fantasy to get, I'd highly recommend Final Fantasy Dimensions. FFD shouldn't be overlooked even if not an early part of series canon, it's got a compelling plot and retro Final Fantasy style action.

Veteran FF games told me that odd numbers in FF are for game mechanism and even numbers are for story, it is not surprising to see people praise IV for story. I have this on NDS so I am giving it a pass.

    (Some how FFVII has both)

I hated the TWEWY for ds, but I bought the iPad version.
This one is way better than the ds version, I like it :)

It's probably really hard to play on an iPhone, so I don't mind.

Does anyone remember or know what the Final Fantasy series for the Gameboy was called? There were two different series, actually. One was an action-based one (ie. hitting button to strike sword, hit switches, use grappling hook, etc., and the other the typical FF play). Final Fantasy Legends comes to mind, but I can't remember which one that referred to.

Final fantasy adventure is the action-based one. Legends was the other and there were three of those.

    There were 2.
Final Fantasy legend(s) were part of the Saga series and not really FF games. I think they we're turn based. If I recall.
Final Fantasy Adventure. It was part of the Seiken Densetsu series of games, of which Secret of Mana was the second. And the third (never released outside of japan) was the best (my favourite) action-RPG of all time.
