I agree with you in cases where it's an actual port (ie. I'd never argue that I should get the PS3 version of a game for free just because I have the Xbox version), however in this case it's exactly the same code I bought when I bought my Genesis cartridge years ago. When you buy a game, you're really paying for two things: 1) The actual disk, packaging, etc, which probably comes to around $1 2) The personal usage rights to the information on that disk, which is entirely independent of the medium it happens to come in. This is the very reason why you're committing an offense if you download a game illegally. And contrary to what you say. People don't have to re-buy music they already have on CD just to play it on their iPod/phone, so why should they have to do that for games? Format-changing/conversion is a fair usage right.
yeah, SEGA sucks. It hurts for me to say that, I love SEGA so much as a kid but lately they've been doing pretty mediocre stuffs. They even consistently screw up Sonic, their darling mascot, just to milk the cash. And especially on Appstore, they're really an embarrasment compared to Capcom (Street Fighter IV), Taito (Space Invaders Infinity Gene), Square Enix (Chaos Rings) or Rockstar (GTA).
Oh what a surprise, its monday in NZ,Splinter Cell AND Sonic never materialised!!If theres one thing that annoys me about iDevice games is the fact that realise dates slip and no explanation is given or games are simply shelved and they tell no-one....ie What ever happened to Phoenix Wright???!!!
Going by this "logic", if you own a BD-ROM of Dark Knight, you should be able to take that protected BD-ROM, remove the video file, and put it on whatever hologram do-hickey they come out with in the future. You might be able to...illegally, but not on the up and up. Why? Because you don't own the game. You don't own the data. You own the unique physical copy of the game, but not the data itself. Want it on another platform or medium? Gotta buy it again. That's just how it goes.
If you mean making an all new game specifically for iPhone/touch, then that's technically not the definition of "port", as there's no porting done. But, yes, Sega should optimize the emulator. And make it a "bundle" with new games available via DLC rather than separate apps for each. And, of course, actually put their mobile dev studios to use. But that would make sense. And Sega, god bless 'em (I'm a HUGE Sega fan), was never great at making sound business sense.
No, it not. Going by your logic, we shouldn't be able to rip our CDs into MP3s and put them on our iPods/phones. You don't "own" anything physical other than the disk the media comes on, and you don't own the data. What you do own is the personal usage rights to the data on that disk - and that includes the right to format-shift it. What you can't do is make another copy and give it away or sell it. And no, I see nothing wrong with ripping a DVD-ROM and burning the (DVD-quality) video file to a blu-ray disk, as long as you're not selling or giving away either copy. Likewise, I see nothing wrong with ripping a blu-ray movie, re-encoding it and putting it onto my iPhone. I certainly don't have the right to automatically own the blu-ray quality movie just because I own the DVD, however. It's a commonly repeated myth that ripping DVDs is illegal under the anticircumvention clause of the DMCA, but this isn't actually the case. It's illegal to distribute tools that break copy protection (probably a misguided and incompetent attempt to prevent widespread piracy of disks), but not to break it yourself, providing your use of the data still falls under fair use.
All those games I mentioned above are not all new iPhone games. They're port from their console / pc / mobile counterparts. So they're PORTs!
Lol, I even double checked those games were ports thanks to your post I LOVE Sonic, I love Sonic 1-3, my sisters love him, my girlfriend loves him, everyone loves the good old Sonic. I've bought SEGA Sonic collection on all consoles I have. HOWEVER, I'm just really not sure with this. Sonic 1 leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth and I believe one day Sega will just release a Genesis emulator and not give a damn about us who've paid for their iPhone Genesis games so far. And lest not forget how mediocre Sonic 1 was, terrible controls, terrible performance on older devices, no bonus, no save slots, nothing. It's a rip-off compared to Sega Genesis Collection on other systems (25 games for only $15!!)
*hugs his Sega Genesis Collection on his PSP, with nice controls, nice performance, bonuses and save slots*
