Frankly iPhone really has a SHIT battery life. Unlike the Touch it also runs the phone app which doubly eats at the battery. My friend complains of frequent near dead battery, and he charges it everyday and by noon it's dying already. He doesn't even game on it.

Look at it this way, even with the iTouch, if you do heavy gaming your battery's gone pretty quickly (inside of an hour or two), it'll just be twice as much worse with the iPhone. I'd really recommend you getting a separate phone. I have a separate phone that's also a music player, so I really only use my phone as a data holder as well as gaming device while on the go.

I honestly do not think an external battery would even be enough for the iPhone. Even with their promises of one or two full recharges, think about how fast iPhone's battery life goes (I'd say 1/3 or 1/2 of iTouch) and think about exactly how much battery life you'd get even after one or two recharges (and not all the external batteries out there recharge it twice). You'd only be approaching the equivalent of one full charge of use time of the iTouch (which would be triple if you instead use that external battery on your iTouch).

Save the money, get a normal regular phone. You'll get used to carrying two devices - well, that's because I also use my iTouch to read books, all the time.

lol no need for 2 devices.

I have an iPhone 3G with location services turned off, 3G off, brightness to 30-40% and WiFi off.

Working a 12 hour shift I've never had to carry my charger with me, listening to music all day and making phone calls with the occasional minigore I still go home with plenty of power left.

My experiance is that listening to music does not drain the battery at all. Often i can listen for hours with like 1-3 percent battery loss. Thats cool.

What is not cool is that in general everything involving sending/reciving data, surfing the net/pushing mail/gps/different apps that connects to the internet etc, just totally drains the battery. Not to mention gaming.

In short you could say that the iphones batterycapacity is fine when used solely as musicdevice and taking calls and the rest of the time stands in standby.

The problem is that iphone is so much more. You can do about everything with it and people probobly do to. I can not imagine myself most people just use it as a phone and when you dont, then batterytime just sucks overall. Thats the sorry truth.

I really really hope apple crams a little nuclear reactor in the next version of the iphone becouse as already mentioned, the batteries is its "major flaw". Just slab 200$ more to the price i dont really care, just give me decent batterytime that let us use this multipurposedevice properly.

EDIT: im writing this from the iphone. This post alone including this edit drained the battery with 9 percent and im on full 3g coverage. That just suck IMO.

The current iPhone's battery life is the reason I'm waiting for the multi-core iPhone that's said to be released this June/July. Whether that'll happen or not, I expect some tweeks that Apple'll do to improve the crappy battery life of the iPhones today. Some said it'll be an OLED screen.

Anyway, I got a BB Bold 9700 (after being a BB hater) and sold my Nokia N97. Couldn't be happier with this phone partnered with my 64gb touch. Now I'm completely satisfied with my smartphone needs and this will tide me over til the next gen iphone (praying for Snapdragon, OLED and 64gb).

YES!! I hope Apple starts using OLED technology, its the best for power saving... I also read somewhere that amazing advances in laptop battery technology could be expected in 2010, this was maybe 2 years ago.. I figure if I go onto one more 2 year contract, by the time that runs out, battery problems will not be nearly as bad...

Im also planning on just getting a dumb little Chocolate Touch, it looks cool (even FM radio!), and I got a $50 off coupon from verizon.. so only $30 not too bad

Ditto. I have 3G on, but providing you don't use the phone like an idiot (ie: turn the brightness down from the stupidly bright maximum and turn on auto adjusting, turn off wi-fi when not needed, etc) you can do pretty much anything you want for a day and you'll be fine. I love my 3GS' battery life.

I had an iPod touch and wasnt sure if i shud get an iPhone. But am I so glad i did. My battery life seems to last. and it charges super fast when plugged into the wall. So if u do drain your battery. 45 minutes or so should have you almost back to 100 %. The iPhone was the single greatest purchase i have made in a long long time. Plus having internet everywhere and not just in wiFi is the best. Get the iPhone. You wont regret it.
