I don't like the games/gaming on the Touch like most of you here but the few games I do like, I really like!

Given that I never even had a 2nd gen, would it be worthwhile for me to spend the cash now on the newest Touch?

Would the speed/graphics increase be noticeable enough to impress me?

I do use it for a lot of music and web browsing too.

    Cheers :)

It depends...if you want to get 8 gb, then the 2nd generation touch is the same as the 3rd generation 8gb, while it is cheaper. However, the 32 and 64 gb ipod touch 3g have upgraded speeds equal to the 3gs, so it should be noticably faster. For me, I'm in the same situation as you. I have the 1st generation touch, but because I felt the lack of upgrade for the ipod touch 3g, I didn't buy it, although I planned on it.

i might be tempted to go from 1st to 3rd but having a second and having the ability to upgrade to 3.1 sort of squashed my plans to upgrade. I thought there was going to be a camera and all so now I will wait. I have a 32gb to begin with and am never close to filling it so even the 64gb doesn't tempt me!

Any good 3GS hardware specific games will still be around a year from now. All you'll be getting is better load times and shading. I say just buy a 2nd gen 16gig touch for ~125, cause the 2nd gen really is worth the upgrade. Wait for the magnetometer and video camera, cause these are the things that are really gonna make games and apps something remarkable and immersive.
