Of course the graphics are not awesome, but I don't gonna spend 2.000$ to buy better graphics for this game without make sure people want a game like this, I don't wanna sell only 30 copies like my previous games and loose all these money
While you make a point, it's a cycle. The better your graphics, to a degree, the more customers you attract. If you were to show me this game along with something like Fallen (which are EXACTLY like old school RE graphics), I think I'd look more at that. Plus, when you have 3d graphics it seems like you can do alot more, such as have enemies drop in from the ceiling or have things bust through walls. On top of that, 3D is much scarier than 2D (although the original Clock Tower is an exception), and when people go for Resident Evil, they're looking for scares, which is much harder to attain with 2D graphics. On top of that, if you made it 3D, it's much easier to justify a slightly higher price tag of a dollar or two more. So instead of charging anywhere froim 1-3 dollars as I can see the price would be from the current screens, if it was 3d you could charge from 5-7 dollars. It's a payoff as far as I can see. We can wait a bit longer for a better game.
Eskema that was my point, believe me, spend all the time you need to come up with what we discussed... Its not really common in app store. Think about it and see how the thread is yielding... You can talk to other developers about your project and see if they will be interested in working with you.. I think that was what JoshCN did, sorry if i am wrong but just try and make thing better when they are cloned. Regards
Indeed it's true, better quality, more customers you attrack, but sometimes it's not all a matter of how awesome graphics you got, sword of fargoal it's an example of poor graphics and interesting gameplay. If I showed something like call of duty zombies, I'm sure this post will be full of people waiting for it to buy no matter how much it cost.
One of the best ways you could go around this is with pre-rendered backgrounds. That's what the original RE games did to get around hardware limitations, and it looked really nice. It looks great, and helps point out what really matters in the game. I've been playing Resident Evil 2 alot today, and the pre-renderedness looks great, and if you have any decent artists it should be no problem. They don't have to be the most detailed things ever, just as long as it helps set the mood and provides a decent setting.
i have no interest in a clone. i will wait for the original. but good luck with ur clone. u have big shoes to fill. if u want to make money from this clone. ur game better be top and advanced shit. but so far no appeal.
Hey, our graphics aren't that bad! Glad you like the gameplay though. Good luck with your game, Eskema!
No offense pal, I like your game, a good game for me it's a matter of gameplay, not only graphics, I grow up with the 8bits spectrum computer
good lord i can't believe the amount of flack this is getting, especially for not going the 3-D route when the app store market is dominated by many EXCELLENT 2-D old school style games. there are some good posts with input on specific things they would like spruced up like the menu, then there are just blatant rude ones. on a sidenote, i can confirm to you that a handful of the posters complaining are still teenagers in school(and i don't mean this in an offensive way), so you can get a feeling for that generation and why they feel the way they do. i on the other hand am a die hard survival horror buff. my love goes all the way back to the original horror games like sweet home for the famicom, the original alone in the dark, and a personal favorite of mine, clock tower for the super famicom. these all feature laughable graphics at this point in time, but the gameplay is what makes them the great games that they are. to me, this app is like a throwback to the retro horror games of old, especially sweet home. i was pleased the second i stepped into this thread and read the topic post. and then i was extremely displeased to read the stack of negative posts against you, that eventually amounted to you already considering ditching the project. thanks touch arcade, you're a lovely constructive bunch.
lets face the truth.....even people with a low budget can create successful games, if they are really good in what they are doing. and of course you are competing with games from the big companies. so if you are not able to COMPLETELY overhaul the look of this game, it will find not many buyers.....if any at all. but if you have fun doing this, why not. see it as a hobby and as long as you don't do it for profit, you will be fine.
I am sure you will be one of those that will say, "Omg, Great game but i guess i will pass this one"... I like your point.. very reasonable but don't get us wrong, we are making a point.. If this stands as a clone, let it be done better than the name it strives to imitate. The developer is a friendly person and i had a great chat with him. indie devs needs money and they don't want to come up with a game that can please just 40 people and the rest will end up asking for a code or stating "Nice game but i'll pass this one"... I am sure he will come up with something that will surprise every one soon.. just keep on the watch.
Sword of Fargoal is a beatiful game. The graphics may be old school, but they're extremely well done. This one, not so much.
no, actually i've been very good about supporting all of the survival horror apps. unless he charges some sort of ridiculous price, this app would be a guaranteed purchase from me. i find it very depressing that you're on the side of pushing a developer to alter what they want to create just because it means more sales. though this obviously shows you mean well for the developer financially, it's a dick move from an individual gamer's perspective. some of us in this very thread do hold interest in a retro styled throwback horror game. but since your idea of what the general consumer wants doesn't apply to the app, you feel like you should discourage the dev from continuing on as scheduled. and yes, you're right, this is obviously a low budget indie dev. so why already shout out discouraging things like "well gee, if you're going to clone a game, it should be in 3-D graphics and be BETTER!" i think you've missed the point of doing a retro homage to the horror games of old right from the get go. i'll gladly point you in the direction of Fallen, though. that should satisfy your idea of what a survival horror app has to conform to for the money.
I think the issue is not 2d vs 3d graphics, or cutting edge vs old school. A horror game need to be atmospheric to work; those brightly lit hallways are as scary as a nice stroll in the park. I'm sure that the developer can improve that aspect of the game, but for now the visuals don't cut it.
I read through the pages in the thread, and I think this looks pretty interesting! I want to see where it goes, don't give up. I think if you put time and hard work and take suggestions from the experienced people on the forums this game could take off! Oh, and also I am 14, and I actually read and think before I type, to whoever said that. I can understand why you said that though! Keep working hard on this game and don't listen to the downers!
