Well, I'm off to GDC and the remaining promo codes are only good for a few more days, so here they are. 4T4NHNL9AXAH PRFAJ9PXEYWW 69KEMLXM9R4F ENK49T3933NT NPYKNYWHNJHK 4XAKXHRTKEJM HKK9AJ9FYFH9 MY4N7YYLYKLF 4YTM4XAH9AYH PJE7734LYRPH FEFFRF9YFTLK PHPXEHLM6MWY MWRFLTF3P4NA 3NW44ETTPTRW H4YNWRJ9MKT3 If anyone makes a nice looking maze, feel free to post a screenshot on the Facebook fan page for Fugu Games - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fugu-Games/107276163331
Nice app actually, it's not what many people would consider a game, but it's fun. One suggestion would be make it a little deeper with goals and stuff, but it's a nice time killer. You should create a topic about in in the TA iPhone Game Discussions so people can talk about it.
Thanks! I was indeed going for time-killing appeal with an emphasis on atmosphere, rather than necessarily game-goals that probably every other maze app has. (a good comparison is with RealMaze3D - it uses the same Unity engine and is more optimized for smoother frame rate, where I compromised on that to get the spotlight, for example). I haven't ruled out adding something like completion times, especially since I started supporting Scoreloop (in my HyperBowl apps), but that sort of goes at cross-purposes with the current design (each maze is randomly generated and the starting and exit positions are random, so it wouldn't really be fair to compare scores). But I'll probably just try something new each iteration - this originally was just a test of a maze generation algorithm that I released as a Mac widget and it was surprisingly popular, so I ported it to the iPhone. Good suggestion on the Game Discussion thread - I don't spend much time on TA, but I'll check it out, maybe I should take more advantage of that.
Thanks for the code. I think therhino is spot on. It's a nice time killer, but it would really have much better replayability if there were scores and leaderboards. I do think the graphics are pretty good, and the framerate really is smooth. Not sure how to get around the random maze generations, unless you could have a stock set of mazes that are used for leaderboards, and the rest could be just for additional fun. TA is a great forum - I'm sure others will have some additional thoughts as well.
therhino and secondtime, I took your suggestion and started a thread in Games and Discussions. By the way, the "not a game" complaint is a frequent one I get, and actually I think it's a potentially interesting discussion/debate (worth it's own thread in Games and Discussions, maybe). I know JayIsGames has a separate Web Toys category distinct from Games. However, Apple actually lists Puzzle as a subcategory of Games (but doesn't show the subcategory in iTunes as far as I can tell), and Tucows even lists Maze specifically as a subcategory of Games. It does seem to bother some iPhone users more than people playing the widget and web player versions, so I think there is a gamer cultural issue here. Personally, I don't care much about scores in solitary play (I remember killing time as a kid with old-fashioned activities like bouncing a soccer ball), but I do agree there's an additional level of interest once you're competing against others, and I'm thinking the maze randomization might not be a real impediment - players just have to accept it as the "luck of the draw". For example, I found Scoreloop isn't a perfect match for HyperBowl since they provide just a single leaderboard and HyperBowl has multiple lanes of varying difficulty, so the scores aren't really comparable. But Scoreloop does support challenges and players seem to like issuing and accepting challenges even if the scoring is a bit arbitrary. If Fugu Maze had a real multiplayer mode then conceivably you could have multiple players syncing up with the same maze - that would be pretty cool, but I don't think I'll tackle that for a while.
