I am considering buying one of these off of craigslist or ebay to see if I like a Mac. But I was just wondering if it would be worth it? Are they way outdated? Just wanted to read your thoughts on this computer. Btw the price I am being offered is 450, is that a good buy?
They're not too old. Mac's usually age better since they're not necessarily used for gaming, which is the most upgrade intensive use of a computer out there. And it's a 2 GHZ computer, right? Pretty admirable considering it's been a good 7 years or so. I think $450 seems a little high. Depends on its condition. Why not go for a new Mac Mini instead?
I have a Power Mac G5 laptop right next to me... it was a 2Ghz... and the processor broke into pieces inside the computer one night (it was actually New Year's Eve/Day, when I made like a whole bunch of posts here... it didn't like TA I guess ) Apple said the fixing price was $2,000... I just waited until February for the new models and got a new one (BTW it's only PowerPC so you won't be able to run much. Don't even think about gaming on it.) Yeah, they're probably too outdated... I would try for a Mac mini or something, like Kamazar said.
I have a Mac mini, and I can tell you with the specs they are running these days it would be a far better investment and not too far off from that 450 price.
+1 forget everything PPC based. ESPECIALLY if your are new to Macs or you are not a Pro User. PPC Application Support is closing down fast. Nearly now new feature or Software support it anymore. Essentially you will buy a time capsule. Also with G5, the cooling system is going to DIE, sooner than later, esp. the liquid cooled G5s. An Performace wiise any Mac Mini blows any G5 out of the water with his hands tied to its back. Buy a maybe a (used) Mac Mini with a 9200 nVidia Graphic for cheap and you will be happy.
