http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narbacular_Drop For anyone wanting a bit of information about this, just something for people that are fans of portal and want to know more about the developers and their "coming of age" game from Digipen.
The dev only answering tidbits of questions every 10 post, hiring TBN then firing him, no gameplay or screenshot, the dev receiving a letter saying he can't do this .... well everything sounds kinda odd to me. Kinda reminds me of Slapshot games.
Yeah, I remember that... they apparently were going to make some sort of in-depth RPG that never happened. What ever happened to that anyway? Let's just hope that doesn't happen here... I really want to see this game made.
Of course you can't just port someone else's game and sell it on the app store! When you posted your previous thread, you made it sound like this was just going to be a mostly proof-of-concept thing you were going to release for free on Cydia, much like quake4iphone, not a flat-out commercial port. Why does this matter? As long as what you're doing is non-commercial, it's difficult for a company to claim damages, as long as you're not redistributing their data. IF you want to release this on the app store, you're going to need to talk it over seriously with Valve. There's no good reason why a company like Valve wouldn't negotiate a license with a competent developer, especially if they don't have their own iPhone division, since it would allow them to make a significant amount of money from that market at a much lower cost than if they had done everything themselves. They have quite a long history of working together with modders and small developers. But that's your job. If you make no attempt to establish a working relationship with them, all they see is another selfish company trying to make a quick buck with what they perceive as an openly hostile action. Incidentally, I doubt this guy's story too. I've seen several devs in various places use the C&D excuse for discontinuing a project, usually because they realize that they've taken on something they can't possibly hope to finish and want to save face until the very end. It's a convenient excuse, because everyone "knows" you can't reveal the contents of a C&D (actually a myth, but that's another story). How do I know they were fake? 3 reasons: most of the projects were noncommercial, and there's very little financial incentive to sue in those cases unless they're directly competing with their product; pretty much any C&D sent to a noncommercial project is just intended to intimidate and won't be followed up on. Secondly, the circumstances made no sense - are we seriously expected to believe that a company would waste their time sending letters for these sorts of borderline cases, yet ignore the many far more blatant cases of copyright violation that litter the internet (many on US-hosted sites)? Finally and most importantly, there are remarkably easy ways to evade a C&D and continue working on a project.
Yep, they have had no screenshots, no videos, no things about game mechanics, apparently got a letter from Valve, which is pretty convenient excuse. I for one, doubt they every planned to make a portal port. The dev also seems pretty immature.
yes and ive played the original portal like 15x over.....i was just spoiled by the 3D version and cant play anything else
This project was NOT fake! I promise you guys! I loved getting all the support, but it just ended up not working out! Sorry guys! Although I do need a couple more beta testers for my game! Check the thread for more info! Speed Type
well we didnt get to see any screens, no concept art, nothing, so i really am at a loss as to believe you or not...i could easily start a fake thread saying "Gears of War 3" and say that im the dev, then do like you did and post no info and then after a while say "oh it just didnt work out" why didnt it work? just curious
