You fail at attempting to be smart. It's "surprisingly" not "surprisly".

Something tells me your friend didn't really pay $1000 for Photoshop CS5

If you are a student, it costs 199$. Gimp is free and very good.

You could also check out Pixelmator, not sure if its what you're looking for.

I know you make icons, do you use CS5?
Because I have Pixelmator and I was wondering if you were aware of any templates for Pixelmator to make icons.

    Define student. College?

Yea I use CS5. As far as I know, Pixelmator + .psds don't play well together, I tried it once but it didn't really work out.

On a related note Gimp won't work for making icons either, since you need to be able to access the layers.

I'm pretty sure Gimp does layers.

Not sure myself, never used Gimp. I'm just going off of what a friend on MT told me, Gimp doesn't do something that is necessary to make icons.

That's what I was afraid of, I tried one for Suave once, and I could see about everything, but couldn't do anything.

Gimp is painfully empty and lacks about a hundred million features by now, but it'll work for people with zero budget.

I hate Gimp. For a price, Photoshop has more features and is easier to use (IMHO). BUT... if you are broke and aren't looking to do anything major, Gimp works as a bare bones program.

Look, all I know is that I've seen many icons for themes made using Gimp, and they came out looking horrible. You won't produce good looking icons if you don't use the proper tools..Gimp just doesn't cut it.
