I can't really see where the devs will go for the next ship since they're trying to make every ship so unique. Maybe wingmen or bits/support units?
or maybe a ship that sort of merges the other ships - a spread shot kind of like the original ship, a couple weaker lock on missiles, and a laser or two... would be great to see a ship with 2 cockpits - needing to worry about getting hit on both of em... =oP Might just be me though... maybe seeing a boss type ship would be great - and have it only fight other boss ships - or complete onslaught of medium ships (have like 8 of em on the screen at once...) =oP
That sounds like the Phoenix itself But I like the idea of having two cockpits, that would be crazy enough for the Phoenix iAP ship mold
2 cockpits, haha, I like where that's going. I'm not sure if it will be fun, but it's a fresh train of thought. We are avoiding beam weapons for enemies because they are hard to balance. Lasers deal a fixed rate of damage while hitting, a player could move through a beam very fast and hardly receive any damage. To counter this, the beam would have to be super strong. Side ships and Wingmen are definitely cool, we did some prototyping on this even before the release of Phoenix HD. Though the wingmen felt like a different kind of homing missile.
So, anyone want to share their scoring experiences with the Shogun? I thought it would be the ship to get me my high score but that honor still belongs to the Corsair, with the Shogun I've only managed 7.2mil so far. As we go farther into runs, it becomes pretty crazy for me to keep a track of the various turrets with this ship and I generally find myself being trapped in a corner where if I don't have a shield, EMP or alpha strike I'm pretty much dead.
So I have Phoenix (classic) on my 2nd gen, I'm getting a 4S sometime this week, how will this work, do I need to get Phoenix HD for it to look good, and if so does that mean I need to repurchse the 3 ships? (man run-on sentence much)
The recent update really rekindled my love of this game. I'm so impressed by the new ship...definitely glad to see Firi Games has such high standards for the IAPs they're putting into this game. Way better than paying to avoid grinding or whatever scheme most IAPs are using these days.
The 4S can run Phoenix HD in native retina res, so I would highly recommend getting it. This would also require you to repurchase the iAP ships and the online pass if you want that. Given how powerful the Flare HD engine is, it's very likely the iAPs you buy now will last you till even iPad3 and iPhone 5 when they come out.
Wow... the most "helpful" review for Phoenix SD is ridiculous. Can everyone please down-vote some sense into it?
The Shogun. Hmmm... I think the Shogun is a good start, but I wish some things were done differently. I guess I'll be in the minority here, but let me explain. Firstly, from what I can tell (although I may be wrong), there are no power-ups available for this ship as there are for the others. I find this very limiting in terms of the depth of the gameplay since what you start with is what you end up with. Powering up is where all the fun is. Secondly, I wish that the electricity beams were a MUCH more dominant function of the ship, which would in turn make the ship more offensively driven. This could be achieved by adding power-ups (as mentioned above) that would make the length of the electricity beams increase as you acquire more power ups. I want to emphasize that the defensive aspect of this ship (grazing/slashing) is VERY cool and original, but making the electricity beams a more dominant weapon would spice things up. Thirdly, if there were power-ups, it would be cool if the diameter of the ring that the bullets touch to ignite the slashing would increase as you powered up. I don't mean drastically, but slightly with each power-up. Fourthly, the noise of the electricity beams sounds like a bug zapper. I think a more 'laser-like' sound would be more appropriate. These are my initial impressions. I have not used the Shogun all that much yet, so take it with a grain of salt. Phoenix is still one of the best shooters ever made.
but your attack does power-up - it powers up based on how many bullets you graze (if I'm correct on that...??) I do agree that it would be nice to have the electric attack be stronger... it would be nice to have power-ups for the electricity.
Yeah I think it does power up, but the lack of power-ups that drop from the enemy ships is a huge void. Considering how offensive the rest of the ships are AND that they have power-ups that drop compared to how defensive the Shogun is with NO power-ups, something is missing. But like I said, adding power-ups that drop and making the electricity a more dominant weapon would really polish up the Shogun.
You have to accept that the Shogun is NOT like the rest of the ships. The simple fact that it's so different is what makes it a great addition which increases this game's replay value.
^This... Anyone that played Hard Corps Uprising on PS3/Xbox and used Sayuri will appreciate using the Shogun (For those that Don't Know, Hard Corps is a CONTRA game... Meaning side scrolling bullet hell... Sayuri is a Samurai girl... You have to get close to the enemy in order to attack... She's the most powerful, but she has to get close to where all the bullets are coming from) I for one love the shogun, but i havent platyd enuff of this game to be good with it
SumoSplash, you should take a look at the Phoenix leaderboards and decide if the Shogun is a defensive ship. http://www.firigames.com/phoenix/leaderboards
I appreciate the fact that the Shogun is different and I'm more than comfortable playing Phoenix Moreover, I do like the ship and Phoenix is a killer shooter. But I do think my suggestions could improve it without taking away the uniqueness of how it plays. Involving the electricity beams more so in the gameplay (specifically at longer distances) really can't be a bad thing.
