I am verrry surprised that this game has not gotten more hype then it has..I ve spent much time since the release of the browser version playing this game..This is a EPIC iPhone game which I don't think will be topped for quite a while..The depth of play is truly amazing for the idevice..if your not a TRuE gammer I don't really think that the game is for you, it's not really a pick up n play game, u will need to spend alil time w/ it, learning where the jump gates take you, upgrading ur ships, there is soo much to do and take care of..I would recommend printing the grvmt systems map before u start, It helps ALoT when doing the gvrmt jobs....and if u have any problems while on(running out of gas, running outta money when upgrading ships) there are alot of really helpful ppl in the general chat who will guide u...I see the devs (Paul n friends) on the game alot looking to help ppl and answer questions..the customer support is amazing and Paul seems like a dedicated dev who really wants to make a game for the ppl, and I think that's worth the price right there.

You can also, as of today, play Outer Empires in facebook as well, all in the same universe as the browser (and soon iPhone/iPod touch) version(s).

Check it out here : http://apps.facebook.com/outerempires

With regards to the iPhone/iPod touch version we're still waiting on Apple to approve the application.. we just wish we knew someone over there to call :)

    See you in game soon!

Started playing a bit this morning. I recommend anyone interested in MMORPGs go check it out. This is a very robust game with an almost overwhelming array of options. It's going to be really epic when the app gets approved. Start playing now and shape the galaxy before everyone else starts signing up!

Review of Outer Empires iPhone App

Thought this would interest you all.

    ---------

iPhone gaming has never been more exciting. With the App Store celebrating it's first birthday it can truly be said that the iPhone and iPod Touch are a new entry in the portable gaming market. We've got RPGs, first person shooters, puzzle games, quality side scrolling adventures, and more. Gaming on the iPhone has never been this good.

But something's missing. It's missing from the entirety of portable gaming actually. Anyone guess what it is? I think a World of Warcraft addict probably has.

...the MMO! It's been notably absent from the PSP, the DS, and now the iPhone. We've got powerful gaming in our palms and yet no massively multiplayer games we can play on the go.

Well, say hello to Outer Empires! I've been lucky enough to have been handed a preview copy and I can say that Iron Will Studios has given fans of MMO's everywhere a true gift. Exclusively for the iPhone, Outer Empires is a space colonisation game that requires players to take on jobs, build their fortunes, and grab a piece of the massive in game universe for themselves. It's not as easy as it sounds though. To build your own empire you'll need to battle your rival players, scheme, build alliances, break them and do whatever it takes to get ahead, if you want to become a force to reckon with.

Outer Empires has incredible depth. The universe has 20 thousand systems and 179 thousand planets and moons, all of which are able to be colonised and controlled by players. As if that's not enough the game world is wide open for the players to create their own drama. Economics, politics, and war will be a decision for the players. The development team plans to remain rather hands off allowing the drama to unfold naturally as a myriad of individuals vie for power and wealth. That's of course not to say they don't have great plans for the future, but that will mostly be in the form of the insertion of events and occurrences that the players and the player run galactic government will have to deal with.

From a gameplay standpoint the game is every bit as amazing. The interface is amazingly compact (as it needs to be on the iPhone's screen) and yet has all the complexity and depth you'd expect from the PSP, DS, or even your PC or Mac. You can track your jobs, cargo, colony status, and myriad of other details as well as access galactic maps to plan routes through the vast game world. You pilot you ship through space in the main game window from a perspective that feels 3d isometric, perhaps reminiscent of Escape Velocity. The control is elegant and simple giving you quick and easy control to move freely about in space. On my iPhone 3G the game is snappy and smooth (far more so than many games on the market) which is startling considering the complexity of an MMO. I have to admit to having expect some chop on my non 3Gs iPhone. There is none of that at all.

Mobility-wise Outer Empires once again shines. On wifi at home lounging on your couch the game is brilliant. Taking it out of the house and onto the bus I expected a more cumbersome experience on my 3G connection. Not so. Load times were only a fraction of a fraction longer and the game still ran every bit as smooth. Moving into the train tunnel, here in Sydney, I loose my 3G connection and expected to not be able to play while I waited for my train, . I have a hard enough time twittering without my 3G connection, and yet I gave it a shot.

Outer Empires ran just as well without 3G. With only my regular cellular connection it still ran with only a slightly increased load time for certain menus. The increase in load time though was hardly an obstacle at all, easily manageable. I have PSP games that take a much longer time to load between areas and menus.
As you'd expect from a true MMO, there is in game chat. You can create your own channels as well as chat live on the pre-made ones. At the risk of repeating myself I have to say that once again this interface is quick, responsive, and intuitive. How so much is crammed into such a small screen is hard for me to fathom even as I sit on the train cruising around playing one of the best MMO's I've ever played, portable or otherwise.

One more necessary thing to note is that, obviously, if you loose your internet connection you can't play. It's sad, I know, but such is the life of a mobile internet user. What's great though is that Outer Empires doesn't miss a beat. If the loss of connection is brief enough you can just keep going once the connection returns. If it's a longer one you can just exit the app and log back in. You never loose any progress. The connection to the Outer Empires servers seems to be so persistent that every action occurs on the server. I say this with no knowledge as to how it works. I only know that after a day of playing and a handful of disconnections I didn't find myself set back once. It's a brilliant experience.

All iPhones need a little recharge now and again. Yep. That's true. So how do you play when your poor phone is all tired out? Outer Empires is available for play on the web as well. you can access it easily either through the game's site or through...wait for it...Facebook. Facebookers around the world have another game to play on the ubiquitous social networking site. It runs just as well as the iPhone app with only slight changes in the interface but lacks nothing. What's more your game picks up on Facebook or the game site right where you left off on the iPhone and vice versa.

With the ability to play for free up to level 10 and a very tiny subscription fee, you can't possibly go wrong choosing to give Outer Empires a try. It's endless fun. You can play on the go, in your office on any web browser, at home on the couch, in bed, and yes...those of us that spend way too much time playing WoW can play Outer Empires while we're on a gryphon, waiting for that boat, or waiting for our raid group to get it together!

Too many apps on the app store are claiming to be MMO's when they're really just complicated numbers games. Don't believe them. Outer Empires is the real deal, for the first time on ANY mobile gaming platform. Play it now. You so won't be sorry.

UPDATE: I just spent the whole weekend out and about with OE on my iPhone. Everything I said above holds true in addition to the fact that the game is surprisingly easy on your battery. We all know that web browsing and the like can curtail you battery life big time. Well so far, from a weekend of playing on the iPhone, Outer Empires seems to drain the battery not at all compared to other game's or even just browsing the web. Outer Empire's battery demands seem to me to be somewhere around those of Yahtzee. Not too bad for an MMO! Just one more reason to love this game.

Outer Empires gets "Game of the Week" at casualgaming.biz - they've also had the iPhone to play with :

"In a single generation of machines networked gaming has evolved from a tech-heavy hobbyist pastime to core principal of many modern releases. And whilst people have been playing together for years, the impending arrival of Iron Will Studios’ space-themed MMO Outer Empires marks a true milestone in the history of connected casual gaming."

I've been sticking with the desktop client for a bit, it's definitely a deep enough game to stand on its own. Though the absolute vastness of space in this game is a bit intimidating. It's enormous, seriously.

I just hope the game doesn't get too bloated with hundreds of different factions.

Can't wait for the iPhone client, it sounds like you guys really pulled it off!
