I just canceled my Onlive controller order. Why? Because this is getting ridiculous. Android tablets have had this groundbreaking service (one I'm willing to pay for - rare) for over a week while Apple continues to drag ass. I hope Apple does eventually green light the app, but for now they have lost Onlive at least one customer (me). If it is rejected, my plans for an iPad 3 go right out the window in favor of a Samsung Galaxy
That was probably the right move anyway. I reckon it'll be wise to try out the games that have been modified for touch, just to see how well the service works in general, before buying controllers and such.
It's frustrating yes and I know I really want to try it to but give it some time. And yeah I'm hoping that it comes out for iphone as well because I'm done for a new phone in the coming months and onlive makes android slightly more tempting
You are absolutely correct - the controller is universal. Unfortunately, the iPad is the only real way I have (right now) of accessing the service. I don't have the console and my computer is a piece, so the iPad was my onlive chance. Im actually writing an editorial on the topic for GamersTemple.com, the site I work for. I'll post a link here once it's up.
Well if Apple doesn't approve this app, it is a big mistake. Gamers are not stupid. They will know the reason why Apple won't allow the Onlive app in iTunes. I've been an Apple fan for a long time but if this app doesn't go through. I will definately move to Android. Apple certainly cannot stop the future of mobile gaming.
Surely Apple could block the app for various reasons, but I doubt it's because it could interfere with games in the AppStore, because it won't....like OnLive doesn't interfere that much with PC games. They should have blocked Netflix and Hulu too, for the very same reason...and they didn't and still sell TV series and movies on iTunes. OnLive is great if it works like I tested on the Galaxy S, but has severe limitations too and you can't rely on it for gaming completely. 1) If your network collapse for some reason...you're gameless. 2) If there are traffic problems...you're gameless. 3) You have (still) a limited choice of games. 4) Assuming it will work on 4G, caps will kill the service...it really sucks a lot of data. and so on...it's really different from having the game installed in your phone. I still hope it will come out tonight.
You bring up some good points Pitta. I wouldn't worry about Network problems though. I've been an Onlive customer for a while. There hasn't been any collapes. Also they have reliable servers. I'm sure it will be compatible with the 4G. Their games require minimal internet speed. As far as their selection goes... Yes, it's not the greatest yet but if this mobile thing takes off, they will eventually get bigger and better games. Still, the games they have are not bad. I do believe this is a big threat to the app store games. When you think about it... You could be playing a mini console version of Fear 3, Amnesia, Homefront or Borderlands on your iphone.
You raise a good point but personally I see something such as the kindle app as more of a threat to the ibooks than onlive. Onlive is great under certain conditions but other times apps are better (slow internet etc).
I'm not sure about the kindle app being a bigger threat. I believe the app store's main source of revenue would be their game section. Yes, I'm sure their will be some apps that run better. I have a lot of app games that I play, but to have the option of playing Onlive games on their apple devices is what people really want.
I'm not sure if you know this but the whole point of OnLive was to let people with a piece of a computer to be able to play newer PC games. Granted they're mostly medium level graphics so if you have a PC that can run it then you wouldn't need OnLive. OnLive was meant to be a cheaper alternative for people who want to play games either as a console or on your PC. So having a universal controller can be good even if your computer is bad.
Yep right on. As long as he has a computer that was made in the last 10 years I think he'll be just fine and provided you have a decent Internet connection.
I think that one thing that people are overlooking here is Apple's main purpose behind the App Store. In essence, the App Store is a vehicle for selling iOS devices--the 30% cut that Apple takes is mostly intended to cover the overhead of running the App Store itself, along with some extra revenue. I really doubt that Apple would see Onlive as a threat to their own bottom line--it's more likely that they'd see it as something desirable to have on their devices, since the service itself would increase incentive for people to purchase an iOS device. My suspicion is that the app is just making its rounds through the approval process, or that Apple rejected the app on some other grounds, and that Onlive is working with them to produce a version that meets Apple's requirements. Although I think it's probably just taking a little while to be approved, since that's typically the case on the App Store.
At any case, OnLive marketing departement really sucks. Not a word, not a statement, nothing. Silence is not a good sign, as much as I want the app out. They're boasting how many connections where activated since Android app went live. I can only IMAGINE what will happen (if) when it reaches the AppStore.
true, the app store is a vehicle for selling their devices... but don't get fooled, they make a lot of money selling apps. Apple has been a monopoly for quite a long time for mobile devices but now that is starting to slip away with the emergence of Android devices. So yes, when Onlive comes in with their own market of games, Apple must see that as some sort of a threat. I heard through Onlive, that now, the onlive player app is still under development. We may not see this app for a long time.
Where did you get that info? The app provided by OnLive to various gaming sites seemed pretty final and stable (not less than the Android one for sure). The previews are out there....every gaming site provided with the app was really sure about last week publication on the AppStore. Something is very wrong here. The funny thing is that every preview I read and video I saw, used the iPad as device.
I got that info from the onlive fans forum. One of the members posted his chat with a rep. The rep had said that the Player app is under development, no eta on release. Something along those lines. Also, it seems pretty fishy to me that there is no recent news about the release of an ipad/iphone app. When Android users have had this app for about a week now. How may I help you? ME: I got my Universal Controller yesterday, awaiting the iPad release, in the meantime I needed a controller for my PC so I hooked it up and while it works fine for Onlive games, it doesn't seem to work for any others. Is this by design or am I missing something? ME: Running Windows 7 64 bit BTW Clarissa: The Universal Controller will only work with the OnLive application, and it is universal in that it will work with OnLive on any device that OnLive is installed on. Me: Really? I didn't know that. So I guess I have to wait for the iPad app to get my money's worth out of it (I already have a controller that worked for Onlive on the pc, I just thought it would work outside of Onlive. ME: Any update on the iPad app? Clarissa: We do not have a release date for that yet. It is still under development. Ricky Wilson: I see, ok well thanks then Clarissa: No problem. Clarissa: Have a good one! ME: Thanks u too Clarissa has disconnected.
