From minecraft's notch "Hmm... the person I talked to said the app is still under development" Anyway the general vibe from the onlive forums is it either is still under review or they are still hashing out the purchase thing with apple.
Eurogamer said that onlive have no idea when it is going to be released but that it was sent to apple for approval.
That's great, guess it's time to just let this one go until it actually shows up. I was really getting hyped reading the news articles and then seeing the e-mail from Onlive, only to realize that the e-mail was for Android tablets and it's App.
Well one thing is for sure, they posted that the buy button will be grayed out on the iPad, unlike android tablets we will have to make game purchases on th p.c.
Fine by me! I was thinking more about the logistics for what this app does and it seems to me that there is a parallel with something like the Kindle app. While the Kindle app isn't a streaming client, it does allow content purchased outside of the app through Amazon to be downloaded and viewed. To me, that's the same concept with the Onlive concept except with games. This is probably known already, but here is a good forum for Onlive specific discussion that seems to be very active: http://onlivefans.com/forum.php
Wish the $49.99 controller wasnt necessary for most of the games. I saw a video from yesterday of a guy with a Toshiba Thrive using a PS3 controller plugged directly into the tablet's full sized USB port and play the Regular Onlive games that require a controller. Also, today saw a new video of a man with an Acer A500 who plugged in an Xbox controller into the full sized USB on the tab and also played an Onlive game that requires the controller. Both seemed to work great, so I'm hoping this could work with wireless controllers obviously for the iPad but is doubtful.
Well, I didn't get to read all the previous posts, so sorry if I'm reiterating but obviously with Onlive for mobile it is a monumental step in portable gaming !!! This will absolutely affect the app store games in a big way. I have over 100 apps from itunes. Some are some pretty awesome games such as COD zombies, Modern combat 2 and 3 but to actually play Homefront on a portable device with all of the same graphics as a console. ( I guess you would call this a mini console ) It would be amazing. I also heard that EA would possibly let onlive carry BF3. So if I were to choose between Modern combat 3 or a mini version of BF3... well it's a no brainer. I guess apple is in a pickle . I'm sure they don't want this to happen but it is inevitable. If they don't allow this app, then people like myself will buy an Android and buy games through that device. IMO, I think they should allow it and try and take a cut.( better than no revenue at all)
Midian, what device(s) have you played Onlive on? And what game(s)? Just curious. I'm sure I'm overhyping this service in my mind. Plus, the fact that TA pretty much said this was going to be out already is driving me nuts. I wonder if Apple is flipping out, realizing that they may not see a penny from this if the purchases don't go through them.
I've only tried it on PC with a 1080 monitor. It was at the Eurogamer Expo, so I got to see a whole bunch of games as there were about 10 other people also playing (plus one giant screen ). The games I focused on were Street Fighter IV and Pure (ATV racing game). It ran smoothly enough, but the graphics were quite definitely lower than the console versions I've played. Not terrible, but clearly streamed video with quite a bit of blurring and the occasional artifact.
Yeah the problem comes from the resolution. It's only 720p for now so it's not gonna look good on a 1080p monitor (1920x1080)
Even taking that into account, the blur makes it appear lower. There are only a handful of console games that actually support 1080 (many are even lower than 720, such as a few of the CoD games) but they still look good when upscaled.
I have only played this on the PC and yeah if graphics are important to you, then this probably isnt the service for you (yet?). Having said that graphics arent terribly important to me, and I think the service is a good value, especially when they have sales.
Hmm Im seeing conflicting reports, I wonder is the onlive app only going to initially support the ipad or will it also support the iphone? All the sites seem to say different things.
I don't think anyone knows at this point. Until an official news release comes out, it all seems like speculation. I think it's best just to wait for the surprise moment that the App Shows up in the App Store or a disapointing press release from Onlive stating that they were rejected.
Well... You get the picture, maybe not homefront but say Amnesia, The dark descent or one of their premium games... I actually have Homefront through Onlive. I play it on my PC. The graphics are pretty good.
