Well i'd like to but outside of the uk or the us it's going to be a bit complicated to order one.
Also even if touch controls are decent, there are games that you can't play without the controller yet (Batman AC, Deus ex...) so it's at least of use : )
But yeah, that'd be great if multiple devs could unite behind one controller. (One controller, One API, One vision XD)

I took a look on the Android store to get a feel on how it performs and it looks like it's getting good reviews. The only concerning issue might be some lag with touch controls. Hopefully the iOS version performs just as well (if not better).

Anyways, here's a link in case you want to read up on it:

    https://market.android.com/details?id=com.onlive.client

Man I want this app today!

Ok, so I'm lost. I downloaded the onlive viewer for my iPad. I signed up for my account. That worked fine, and I browsed around the marketplace. Once I realized that you couldn't purchase games from the iPad, I found out that you had to purchase them from a computer. I logged onto my Mac, and downloaded the app for that. Everything seemed fine. I put in my payment info and purchased Lego HP Years 4-7 for 30 bucks. So far, so good. I eagerly logged back into my iPad app where the game showed up for me. It had a clickable button saying "play now". I click the button and get a message saying, "launching games is not permitted on this platform". What the heck am I missing here?

Because only the viewer is out atm, the actual app will be available today supposedly. That viewer app has been around for a while, it only allows you to spectate, watch movies etc.. the real app will let you play that harry potter game, so just be patient and hope apple didn't have a change of heart, and you will be playing it tonight.

Like you said, the app you launched is a Viewer. We're eagerly awaiting the player, which is coming any day/minute now.

The Onlive viewer is an existing app that's been in the store for a while now. It doesn't allow for games to be played.

The part missing is the new app or an update for this one that enables you to play games, this is what we're waiting for. It's out for Android now, but not for iOS. Not sure if it's Apple holding it up or something else.

I am going to repeat what I said earlier, I will be surprised if Apple doesn't take back their approval and think on this some more. This is really a potential game changer and this precedent could impact how the App store looks in the future.

Imagine if you will, everyone selling a free app that lets you pay outside of the service to buy their games. What kind of effect do you think that will have on the App store as far as games? Remember two weeks ago when Big Fish had something similar? that was approved then taken back, so there is precedent for it

At the very least I expect to make the purchases within the app so Apple gets their cut. Is this how it was sent to apple for approval? I don't know, but I doubt it.

I do believe that amazon and others do it the out of iOs purchase method for books and such, so it wouldn't be too unbelievable of apple to approve it for games as well, but who knows. Just throwing that out there.

If it is IAP, then I would expect a increase on price, which I am not sure how that would work, because Onlive games are cross platform. Meaning I might buy it on windows and can play it on anything. So why would a guy who doesnt have a apple device want to pay that penalty?

I will say this, if Apple does take it back, then my next purchase will be a android tablet and phone. I will just give up on Apple gaming.

Somehow I get the feeling the OnLive iPad app might help boost PS3 and 360 sales. Maybe not by much, but a little. As clever and trendy as the technology is, the controls are likely to be harder to use and the graphics are going to be of lower quality. I can't knock the service as a whole as I'm sure there are people in certain positions for whom this is the ideal solution, but there are also going to be a lot of people out there with iPads who suddenly realise how fantastic these games can be and will crave the opportunity to play them comfortably on the platforms they were designed for.

I will absolutely be getting an android tablet from Craigslist (won't dare sell my iPad 2 3G)as well, to use Onlive if Apple stalls on this. I wish my android phone was powerful enough but isn't, so a used/new android tablet it may be.

"Maybe the OnLive app will boost PS3 and 360 sales, since people will realize what they're missing."

    Fair enough. Makes sense.

"I think I'll buy a $200 tablet so that I can play OnLive cloud games on it instead of cloud gaming on my $500 tablet. Buy a console for $250? Naw, the games are too expensive."

    Oh, the irony.

I think the draw is the portability not the quality. I already have a PS3, Xbox360, 2 Wii's etc..but to have that on the go? or just chillin on the couch watching your kids do the gaming on the consoles while your playing a real game as well, that's what I am talking about. I do that now, but let's face it with inferior quality mobile games.

Yeah it's definitely the portability, but only really for those without access to the consoles, like yourself when your kids have commandeered them all. I'm curious just how good the portability will actually be, because bandwidth being what it is, I can't see people streaming Arkham City while on the bus. I haven't actually looked into it, but I'm guessing it doesn't support 3G? I can't see how it'd be anywhere near fast enough for a clean image.

I know what you mean about mobile games and their inferior quality, which is why most of my iOS gaming involves genres that aren't really judged on the same scale of quality, such as puzzle games. It doesn't matter if the textures are plain or the controls simple, because... it's just a puzzle, the quality comes from the ingenuity of the gameplay, regardless of platform. I wouldn't play Modern Combat or any of the Assassin's Creed/Battlefield/Dead Space/etc spin-offs on iOS. They'd just make me crave a console game even more.

Dont forget that some people have 4g hotspot which onlive works with. Not alot but still enough to bring up the point I think. And yes I agree that mobile gaming can be stereotypical (I often think of gameloft and their cheesy knockoffs or farmville) but remember awesome games like Infinity Blade, real racing, dead space, and soon gta 3.

For me, the console never gets touched as it is for the same reason. My kids touch the consoles, I don't. Why would I want to play at maybe 720P scaled to 1080P with watered down graphics of a console when I can crank up the resolution and all the graphics on my PC? The kids however it's all about playing with their friends and the whole Xbox live experience etc.. I am not knocking consoles, just saying I never touch them unless it's some kind of exclusive like Uncharted series or something. But if it was on my iPad I'd do that because it is more convenient than the consoles. As far as 3g streaming that ain't going to happen but Androids 4g tablets and phones, I could see that. Also maybe on the iphone 4s with the HSPA+ network that At&T has, because I hear they struck a deal with Onlive just for it.

I really hope this sees the light of day from Apple. I had explored options to stream video from my PS3 or Xbox to an iPad, but of course that's pretty fruitless.

I also had a thought of seeing how the WiiU would turn out since it's essentially a large tablet like screen with physical controls that streams from the WiiU system. But with the prospect of Onlive, I wouldn't have another console to buy more games for, just one that I could play on my iPad or on my lower end PC if I wanted. Plus, I wouldn't have to get up to change the game, just exit and pop into another (yes, I'm lazy!).

I also spent time just watching the Onlive Viewer and watching other people play. I love the voyeuristic nature of being able to watch people play games. Of course, I'm also mumbling to myself about what they're doing and wished I could just jump in and start playing myself.

My main hangup about OnLive is the same reason I don't really use it on PC, there are barely any games for it. They have such a huge library of games to choose from and yet there's barely anything. They need to work harder to get developers to allow them to put their games up on OnLive. I was hoping to play Sonic Generations, Tron, Fallout New Vegas, Warhammer 40k, Company of Heroes, Battlefield 2142. I would start listing some console games that would be amazing, such as Mortal Kombat 9(or is it 8?) or Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

They already approved it. The question is, will they take back the approval. With that, we both agree that yes they will.
