What kind of idiot would make somebody stand for 14 Hrs a day !?! Seriously? I'm about a thought away from pitching my ipad (old one - 3g) right off the roof!!! App's be Damned !!! http://m.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/meet-the-workers-dying-to-meet-your-ipad-2-demand-20110509-1ef68.html?page=1 I was under the impression that the old USofA stood for something better. I'd say this calls for a boycott! Hold off on purchasing any more app's at the very least. FOR A DAY AT LEAST!!! On ONE OF THEIR ULTRA SPECIAL WEDNESDAYS/THURSDAY RELEASE TRANSITIONS NO LESS. Yeah I realize - This would hurt the developers more than the slave drivers. But it's about making a point. I'm off the bandwagon boys, ladies, gentlemen, woman and children. I don't care if they pour unreal sauce all over the apps they release this week. I aint buying a single damn one of them. Not from CM, not TrendyEnt, not nobody.
Yeah it's a tough life for them although I think it's starting to get that way everywhere in honesty in another decade or two we could all be in the same situation. One thing I did read a few weeks back was they were being forced to sign some kind of contract that makes them agree not to commit suicide while they work there. How this works I have no idea at all I can only speculate their family get sued or something if they do which is crazy.
I have a better idea, sell the iPad. If you're legitimately upset about the conditions in which products are manufactured then don't buy them. Boycotting the app store for a week? LMFAO. Would you rather the iPad cost $500 and be slightly outraged about the horrific working conditions it's built under or would you rather it be built in the US and cost three times as much? Personally, I'd rather go cheaper. I say cram that thing with asbestos if it'll save some cash.
Not buying apps for a week? How is that going to solve anything at all? Boycott everything made in china if you really want to do something.
Well most of those working conditions other than the no suicide pact I've experienced here in the good ol' US of A.
Nobody is forcing them to work there. Actually, if you research the facility by standards in that country, it is actually pretty good.. as is the wage.
This never works. Ever. Even if you got a ton of people to agree to this, here's what would happen: Boycott day: Half as many apps sold; Next day: Twice as many apps sold. And it all comes out the same ... +++++ (Not to mention the fact that apps have zero effect on Foxconn; they are a hardware manufacturer. Once that widget is out the door, they couldn't give a shit about what it's used for. They've already been paid).
Oh. This again. Yes. The conditions at Foxconn are well beyond our standards of working conditions here in North America, and every time a piece like this rolls out it always seems to target Apple. Not to let a few inconvenient facts get in the way of a good round of recreational outrage, but: 1. Apple is not the only company Foxconn makes things for. If you really want to boycott, you will also have to include, among others, Acer, Amazon, Asus, Intel, Cisco, HP, Dell, Nintendo, Nokia, Microsoft, Sony/Ericsson, Samsung and Vizio. 2. Foxconn is not the only company that treats employees this way. Many, many factories in China (and elsewhere, for that matter) have conditions that are as bad or even worse and pay even less. The only reason you hear about Foxconn so much is because they are a high profile company who just happen to assemble Apple's products, who themselves became high profile because of the iPod and iPhone. Notice you've never heard a damn thing about Foxconn before the iPhone? Yet they've been assembling things for companies since the 1970s. 3. Employment and safety standards in North America were even worse a hundred years ago and less. China is still a developing country despite their economic success in the last few decades. Yes, the conditions at Foxconn are unpleasant to put it mildly. But there are worse, much worse just within China alone, and I'm willing to bet you own at least one thing that was manufactured and/or assembled in a plant in China that makes Foxconn look good. In all probability, so do I, any everyone else here. I am not defending Foxconn's business practises, but they are neither the only nor the worst offender by any means. They're just the one in the media spotlight right now.
That's china for you. The developers have nothing to do with this though, so why hurt them? boycotting apps won't do anything at all. You could 1. Stop buying ANYTHING made in China (and the many other countries with conditions like this) 2. Sell your idevices (and anything else made in China) and donate it to the workers families? 3 Get lots of money, hire lots of people and start your own company making the devices for all the companies that get their stuff manufactured in China and charge them the same price. 4. Research it a bit, look into how China operates and see that this is the norm for them and that's just how it is. Forget about it and kick back and play your ipad guilt free.
