Evil Angry Planet released today and looks like an amazing real time strategy tower defense hybrid but no one is talking about it; am I missing something?

  2. I had a lot of fun while beta-testing it, much better than similar TD games like Tower Madness. Unfortunately, the game didn't seem to be marketed too well.

What are the RTS elements? That sounds interesting.

Just grabbed Forget-Me-Not as well. It looks excellent.

I want to have enough money in my account for Death Rally and World of Goo, so I'm feeling too cheap to buy FFIII. Should I even bother with FFI, FFII, or Chaos Rings, or should I wait for a price drop for FFIII? I've NEVER played a turn-based RPG, by the way. Sorry I'm clogging the thread with the same kinds of posts over and over again.

I'd say grab Chaos Rings if you're looking for a brilliant introduction into the JRPG genre. FF1 and FF2 might put off newcomers to the genre. Chaos Rings and Crimson Gem Saga are definitely the two best JRPGs.

Get FFI with the current sale first and go from there. FF1 iOS has difficulty that was specifically tuned down so is a good entry step. Word is that FFIII is a difficult game so might not be for the uninitiated.

Get off the fence and take the turn-based plunge!

Edit: Just to confuse you me and Backtothis are making totally contrary recommendations.

  8. It's a fairly typical tower defense game, to be honest, although it does have a lot of polish and a good number of maps. There's not much of a RTS element though unless you consider real-time tower management to be one.

I bought it since it's a $1 TD, but it's not really my type of game. I found it to be kind of mediocre and a bit confusing as to what different tower types/upgrades do. As a result, I have little to say about it.

Third opinion, anyone? Chaos Rings or Final Fantasy one or two (for somebody who's never played a turn based RPG before)?

The same thing many people have been asking:

    FF1, FF2 or SoM?

Also, what about yesterday's other releases (Max and the Magic Marker and Mr. Ninja, mainly)

Does anyone know if Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery is coming to iPhone.

Do you happen to know an answer to the other question :D?

If you're stuck on the Square Enix sale first consider why... is it because you really like RPGs or because you just want to give them a try? If you like RPGs and are not limited to only $3.99 in iOS purchases you should get both during the sale. They're both worthy games so why artifically limit yourself. If you're unsure or just not into RPGs then there's nothing wrong with passing altogether because at $4 if you're on a budget it's hard for me to recommend a blind buy of either. There are cheaper RPGs out there to experiment with.

If you're into the gameplay and absolutely have to choose one or the other then the real choice is between a Final Fantasy and SoM (FF1 and FF2 are similar enough to be interchangeable especially for novices so you'd only need one at this time). SoM is an action oriented KRPG precusor that has more replay value, a better story, and perhaps easier to just pick up and play for a bit. However, Final Fantasy is a turn based strategy RPG with an open world design that emphasizes world exploration and random encounter battle mechanics. There is not a lot of grinding in FF1 but you will be stumped what to do at times and I feel it's a more puzzling game that SoM (although enemies are less diffcult than it's NES version). FF1 is probably longer than SoM. It all boils down to your preference in gameplay style. I prefer Final Fantasy but Secret of Mana is still excellent.

I am one that tends to get bored with games if not a lot is happening, so if you say SoM is more pick and play and is action orientated, do you think that would be for me.

Oh, and to not be influenced by any other factors besides gameplay, lets say I have 3.99 left and need to get a square enix game that is on sale.

I'd suggest Secret of Mana in your case but try Wild Frontier first; if you like the style then that's a decent iOS RPG for 1/4 the cost ($0.99). It's not as polished in my opinion as Secret of Mana but Wild Frontier is representative enough of action RPGs and if you don't like it then you saved yourself some money. If you're not nostalgic or big on action RPGs there's not reason to splurge on Secret of Mana short of impulse alone. One reason I got it is because I have fond memories of staying up all night in middle school playing it.

I think I'll settle on SoM, I got Wild Frontier when it was free and had a lot of fun with that.

Last question, how much grinding is necessary and how many hours do you think it will give?

Secret of mana for 3.99? yes or no?

judging from gameplay videos and reviews, i can tell that the combat system is more engaging than the typical tap-attack-till-it-dies scheme in most iOS action RPGs. so if grinding is necessary i guess it would be more fun :)
