In other words, if you have A6 already, you don't really need any other arcade racer that's currently out on the AppStore.
I checked out TouchGen, 148Apps, touchAholics, and SlideToPlay today for the first time ever just for the heck of it. Oh dear. I knew TA didn't really have any competition, but I didn't know the situation was this bad for the other top iOS sites.
Touchgen is too rough on games, 148apps isn't very professional, and STP hands out far too many 4/4s. Yep, TA's got the best reviews and the most news of any iPhone gaming site.
While all of that is true, none of the other sites have anything that anyone would ever call an online community. TA on the other hand..we're a family here :], one f**king huge family of gamers. None of the other sites really offer the general gamer's point of view or have any discussion at all.
Really? I tend to agree with most of Touchgen's reviews, and nevermind the scores for STP, their actual reviews are top notch as well. But TA dominates with their iOS news coverage, I'll give you that.
I like touchgen: they get lots of previews and have pretty solid reviews. I never bothered with 148apps and I used to read stp. but then they started giving all decent games 3's and other not so awesome ones 4s. ie. jetpack joyride. they said it was unoriginal D:
Yo PF, I won the first promo/giveaway thing I ever tried xD. Just got my email from Com2uS :]. $10 isn't much, but it feels real' good for some reason. Shadowgun, Mage Gauntlet (depending on the price), and possibly another game releasing this Wednesday night for free. Sweet!
oh wow! gratz bro XD. im on a dry streak right now. Haven't won in quite some time D: i may have to actually go buy a gc for the first time since uh... christmas 2 years ago.
Mage Gauntlet won't be coming out this week... It will be coming somewhere in October (confirmed by Twitter)
One of the things I used to really like about TA (when compared to the competition) was that TA would cherry-pick games to review. Even if I didn't care for the game personally, I could still see the reason behind reviewing that game. Most of the other sites felt like they were just going for a high quantity of reviews, taking whatever promo codes they could get and doing a write-up, even if the game was complete junk. More recently, though, I feel like TA has fallen into that same mentality, covering way too many games that really don't deserve to be reviewed. The whole point of visiting these types of sites is to help filter out the junk, but it seems a bit silly when I have to filter out the reviews that are supposed to be helping one filter in the first place. Of course, this is just my personal opinion, and if TA has decided that this approach is better for them, so be it. They've still got great reviews either way (even if some of them make me say WTF at the game choice) and it's not like people are going to stop visiting the site.
I think some of my favorite games have been reviews of some very obscure titles that might not otherwise get any attention. If it wasn't for TA's "WTF" choices of games to review I might have missed out on a lot of my current favorites.
Obscure is not the same as WTF. There are good obscure titles that TA is very good at picking out and letting us all know about them. When I say WTF, I mean the reviews of games whose quality is not comparable to TA's normal selection. Obviously this is very subjective and we can't really quantify a game's quality. But it was just an observation about some of TA's more recent reviews.
One reason for this is that the TA's writers have doubled recently. There's not enough "high-quality" titles to go around. TA has always been a very indie-friendly place in any case. Also, after looking through the past three pages, I see few instances of the type of games you mentioned. Nearly all of the reviews have been for games that were featured by Apple. Yeah, Apple features a lot of crappy games, but if TA isn't going to review the games most visible to AppStore customers, what are they going to review? Either way, TA does a better job than the other sites, but what makes TA really stand out is the community here like I said.
Anyone recommend Trine for $5 on Steam. It's also on the Mac AppStore so I thought it'd be appropriate to ask here.
A resounding YUP! Great eye candy for sure, and it's a very fun platformer with some unique and fun mechanics. It is only about five hours long; it's up to you whether or not you think that's a good value.
Yup, that's what I heard. And after you play the first one, you'll be dying for the second one to come out.
I believe I read the game had coop gameplay. Is their an online coop mode? If yes, I want to buy another copy of the game before the sale ends for my gf. Just played the tutorial level. Awesome game so far. Edit: Aw, just read that that there's only offline coop. Guess we'll just share the game on my Steam account then. Trine 2 will have online coop though, heheh.
Trine is current $20.99 on the Australian App Store. Looks amazing, but iPhone gaming has given me a warped sense of value.
