X-force (which is Deadpool's genesis) is a personal favorite. Consider starting with one of the company wide crossover events, that would give you some exposure to all the different series and characters. 2004's Avengers Dissembled event might be a good foundation for understanding more modern Marvel comics. Alternatively, a more recent company wide crossover is Fear Itself. Avengers Dissembled Wiki (spoilers in synopsis): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avengers_Disassembled Fear Itself Wiki (spoilers in synopsis): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_Itself_%28comics%29 Isn't that also when Disney bought Marvel Comics? Haha...
What do you mean by his genesis? And that sounds like a good idea. I mean, I know some of the characters, but only by name. I literally know almost nothing about comics
Personally, the entire Joe Kelly Deadpool run is the most definitive, in terms of character development and comedic timing. This is off the top of my noggin so you may want to verify this, but I believe they are vol. 3 issues 1-33. Some of the best writing in comicdom, IMHO.
I think the Mavel Unlimited app duplicates the Marvel Comics app features and makes it obselete (provided you are an Unlimited subscriber no need to have both, otherwise not sure if Unlimited operates as just a storefront for non-subscribers). My perception is that Marvel Unlimited = Marvel App + reading library. The Marvel Comics app looks it operates off their virtual storefront (which is I think a Comixology shell). Marvel Unlimited uses the same log-in information as the virtual store so Unlimited app and Marvel Comics app use the same account. On Marvel Unlimited you can purchase comics (as you would in their app you linked) and although I haven't tested it there looks like a library feature to synch Marvel store purchases for unlimited offline viewing.
For example, Thor: God of Thunder, is a particularly good read that started with this initiative. It's also leading to some of the changes later this year (girl Thor, Falcon Captain America, the Ironman changes, etc). I would also recommend the Superior Spider-man. The Annihilation story line (look it up under major events, then sort by date, I believe there are only one or two out of order) leads into the most current Guardians of the Galaxy run (I believe). Inhumans is also popular, though I didn't care for the drawn out dialog (felt like nothing happened in between most issues besides people talking). .99 is a no brainer. I wanted them to get the yearly sub below-$50 but I guess that's just a dream.
Even the regular yearly subscription price is a steal though if you're like me and only interested in reading, not owning, comics. $69/12 = $5.75 a month, which is about the price of two print issues. I grabbed a promo subscription Marvel had during this year's SXSW and got 15 months for $69. Less than five bucks a month! I'm currently reading through the entire Silver Age, month by month. Up to November 1967 so far.
If you signed up for this Marvel Unlimited $0.99 trial membership then you will need to set up a cancel on it within one week or it may automatically renew at $9.99 per month.
Deadline to cancel and avoid automatic renewal is today, I think... or tomorrow but soon. You can cancel anytime and will keep access through current billing period so if don't want another charge no need to wait.
