Alright, I added links to a review and the game's thread for even easier hunting! I've also added upcoming RPGs so you can salivate over future RPGs. And I'm insisting on having a separate list of games with RPG elements but not quite RPGs. I think they're useful. I'm sort of running into a small problem though, with all the links, I'm actually hitting the maximum size of a post. I'll have to figure out what to do about that. Anyone know any more hidden gem RPGs? TNA Wrestling was my biggest surprise. Undercroft was my favorite. I hate Dungeon Hunter. I actually wish I didn't have to list it. I just think the game is a bit shallow but I know it has its value. I just think they could have made so much more out of the game.
Rebirth of Fortune - Pretty much FFT VR missions. Dragon Bane II / Princess Demelza - Haven't played these yet, but I can tell they're valid RPG's from the screenshots Arvale Series - Same, RPG's but I haven't played them yet. Inotia 1 - Yes, it kinda sucks. Still an RPG. Kyle's Quest 2 - Collection of a bunch of ~2 hour FF style RPG's. Minimae - Like Dragon Quest 1, except with less stats. Island of 8-Bit Treasures - Modern NES-y roguelike. Guardian Soul - Haven't played, looks like a Zenonia style ARPG. Dungeon & Hero - Another ARPG. Dragon Sword - Haven't played, looks kinda like Hybrid. Tap Quest - Free ARPG game, one of my favs. Also, I think that if you want to count Space Miner as an RPG then you have to put Rogue Touch, iNethack, Hybrid, Sword & Poker, and Defender Chronicles in the main list too; they're way more RPG-y than Space Miner.
Inotia 1 sucks so bad that no, it's not going on the list. I'll check out the other ones but I already took a couple out because they were way too bad for anyone to have on any list. I haven't played Space Miner, let me check it out. But Sword & Poker has no real story or dialogue. Defender Chronicles has a story but you can go backwards and play a map again. So the story isn't progressive. I'd compare it to the story in Modern Combat: Sandstorm. Puzzle Quest isn't on there so much for the story and dialogue but because of the fantasy, spells, and experience. I have a hard time putting hack&slash on the list but I know some deserve it. I only played Hybrid Lite so I can't tell if it has any actual RPG elements to it. I also have a hard time with rogue games. I think what I'll do is play Space Miner, since I have it, and see what you're talking about. If anything, I'll put it on RPG Elements list which is probably where it should be. edit: Okay, I played Space Miner and it's not an RPG. Ore Buster, you're comin' down! Yee-haw! I put almost all your suggestions up except a few because they just received wayyyy too many 1 star ratings or didn't manage to even get 5 star ratings. I think if no one thinks it's great and a lot think it's the most horrible thing ever, then there's something seriously wrong. And I conceded with Inotia 1. Apparently a lot of people gave it five stars. Oh well.
I see RPG Quest - Minimæ (or Minimae, either works for iTunes searches) was suggested but it wasn't added to the list. It's deliberately retro and minimal, but surely it's still a RPG: it has quests, dialog, towns with shops, an overworld, weapon upgrades, combat. Additionally, we've had many positive reviews: Retro Thing: http://tinyurl.com/ychttvt http://play.tm/article/27916/november-09-iphone-picks/2/ http://tinyurl.com/ycs9tfm http://appcomments.com/app/336817715?country=143455 http://appcomments.com/app/336817715?country=143441 TA Thread here: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=31877 iTunes link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id336817715?mt=8
Okay, after looking a little deeper I noticed there is a small niche group of people who think your game is great. That's pretty much what I'm looking for to list so voila, it's on the list. Plus I like that someone involved in the game takes time to promote it (I think you're involved in the game). And if anyone's wondering about all the strange links and lack of links, I'm running out of space in the post. I've exceeded 10000 characters thanks to all the links. I'm going to move this soon to another thread where I'm going to hijack the first three posts. I want to have an upcoming RPG list, RPGs list, and RPG elements list based on what element. For example, I think Rebirth of Fortune is an excellent example of having a very strong FF Tactics-like element and anyone looking for that should be able to find it.
Linking to both the thread and article is a little much. There are 1,000s of games with RPG elements for the iPhone. And I doubt it would be a very useful list being as it covers such a huge group.
Just to be sure, I'm not linking to all RPGs. Only at least half-decent ones. That cuts out tons of games. And I actually think it's nice to have a link to thread and article because that's how I choose what game I want to try out. And it might not be useful to many people but it's useful to me and hopefully to some. I especially want some of the lesser known apps to get out there. I prefer having one comprehensive post than digging through thread after thread looking for some hint of a good RPG. I mean, I only came upon Rebirth of Fortune by luck not too long ago and I think the game is great. I have over 100 apps and love to keep trolling for more. So having a large list of games that fit close to my genre DEFINITELY helps someone like me.
Great, thanks for the re-consideration Yeah, I was the designer and main programmer of it. It's based on a Commodore 64 game I originally made in 2001, but we went with a NES feel for this remake/expansion.
I have it and played it briefly to see what it's like. It seems like an involving RPG which sadly I don't have time for right now so it's on the backburner for me, along with all the Quest Expansions and other games I want to play. If you're curious though, there's a link to the thread! Well thanks for bringing an RPG to the AppStore. I think RPG is the greatest genre yet it seems to take the most effort. With all the dialogue, story-telling, character building...it seems more like something a novelist would make than a game-coder. Has anyone heard of A-yo Sushi Master? Someone said it's an RPG but when I look at it, it looks like if it has any RPG element it'd be a weak one, although it got great ratings.
