I know John Carmack said the iPhone was roughly a Dreamcast in its specs, but then I swear he did an interview where he said the iPhone 3GS was close to an Xbox 360 in specs. But I can't seem to find a link to it anywhere. Did I imagine this completely?
i think so...he said that the 3G is better than a ds and something about that is close to a ps2...but nothing about a comparison to the xbox360..that will be foolish imo
No, I think he may have said (maybe? can't remember) that in 2013, handhelds will be comparable in power to the 360/PS3. That's the story I read, but I can't remember the details.
What he stated was that the original iPhone/touch was in the "same generation of graphics technology" as PS2 and XBox. And he's pretty correct, as the original line up, right up to iPhone 3G and and "2nd gen" iPod touch used PowerVR MBX-lite GPUs, and the full fledged MBX is pretty much Sega's NAOMI 2 arcade board graphics power on a chip. The "lite" version is less powerful, probably, so as NAOMI 2 is basically two NAOMI boards, and Sega's Dreamcast was based on their original NAOMI board, he's right in saying the original iPhone/touch line ("1st and 2nd gen") was "of the same gen" as PS2 and XBox, as Dreamcast was of that same console generation (it was the start of that console gen). Remember, last gen home consoles started with Dreamcast, then PS2 came out, then GC and XBox. Do you see?
And Carmack didn't state outright that iPhone/touch ("1st and 2nd gens") were roughly equal to Dreamcast in terms of tech specs. It was actually a Sega exec who stated that, and while technically correct that exec didn't take into account things like background operations, etc. that hog some resources on a mobile device like iPhone/touch that doesn't really occur on a home console like Dreamcast.
they were both equally suck ass and nothing will ever beat the genesis. I would hardly consider them next gen and I won't go into the demographic for the sega dreamcast either
Yeah...I'm just as confused as you are. I guess he's one of the legion of those who actually believes Sony's Kaz stating nonsense like "next gen doesn't begin until we say so".
don't listen to me, i'm in a real bad f'king mood and going through an audit so I'm just gonna log off till i'm done with work, oh and I don't know what i'm talking about.
internal systems audit, i get to hear someone tell me how a system I don't even admin doesn't have the correct password policy and bullshit like this. in fact, I have a meeting right now, peace.
Any 4-year old can tell you the pictures are prettier on a 360. But it's not just centered around any one chip. It's like saying a building out of bricks is less stable that a building made out of steel. The way the pieces are put together determines how effective a device will be, and the iPhone is first and foremost, a phone.
