I was looking at the trailer to decide whether to buy and, not being a fan of TD games, thought to myself: This reminds me of Creeps. Very pretty, but gameplay is harkening to Creeps. Can anyone who played both tell me if I'm wrong?
Gameplay is what matters to me! Art does too, but no matter how pretty, gameplay can diminish a game. (Infinity Blade for me) Just saying that from the video alone, I see bosses, powerups (things like that tornado) and stuff I saw in Creeps. I'll wait for a direct gameplay video (Sanuku? ), but for now it definitely shot up on my radar.
You are also wrong for this! SOSO WRONG! I have a love/hate relationship for TD games and their repetitive yet enjoyable addictiveness!
It's amazing. Highly polished and plus, I bought Jelly Defense not really knowing what it was, except that it was a TD game. I'm only a few levels in and it is great. The controls are great, the graphics are awesome.
Icon and typos aside (and some of this is also an inconsistency in American and British English - pick one, I don't care which one, and stick to it) the thing that is bugging me about this is the size. People complain when a Universal app looks bad on the iPad but this is the opposite. It feels miniaturized for the small screen so everything is just extra tiny. Even the font is just small. It is polished and all, don't get me wrong, just looks out of place somehow - can't really put my finger on it. And speaking of that - collecting the coins is such a pain - you tap the towers by accident and the upgrade or sell options pop up when you do that. So that part just looks messy or something - again, not really an exact gripe here just something that is annoying. So overall it has great promise I just wish it looked more natural on the small device. As it stands, I would only recommend it for the iPad (and I don't even own one).
On iPad the game looks and plays perfectly. I agree that tapping coins is annoying and your finger is always covering the beautiful graphics which bothers me as much.
Needs urgently a fast forward button (as in most td games) and an auto coins collector (sometimes coins are hiding behind towers and they vanish if you don't tap them in time). Runs fine so far on iPad 2. Played two or three levels. Rather bizarre graphics and sounds. Music: Not my taste but fits to the weird style. Effect sounds: A bit kindisch (double/triple speed laughter). Long tutorial for absolute TD beginners. Blue towers for blue invaders, red for the red. There are mixed blue/red towers as well, but they don't seem to be very strong. Fixed paths for jelly creeps and fixed positions for the towers. You can upgrade two times and sell towers. Nothing new so far gameplay-wise… Three stars out of five from Habakuk—until something surprising will happen. There is a pretty mediocre mini-game between levels (simple tap away to collect coins). Will pick it up again if I have some time to kill. Had a blast with Jelly Invaders when they came out months ago. In short: Okay for td beginners, okay for profs if they love the style and don't expect too much.
If you've been following this game as long as some of us have, you'll know why the lack of a retina icon is absurd...that and the spelling. Agree with both Habukak and NEG...they pretty much hit the nail on the head on all fronts.
I'd also like to see a fast forward button. I haven't played it a ton, but so far the stages can be pretty boring while waiting for the waves to go through. A fast forward button would do a lot to fix that.
I have to agree on a point. It is really small on my iPhone and I feel a zoom would make all the difference. Looks great on the iPad though. Also when you collect coins you can't accidentally upgrade or sell you have to hold the tower for the menu to stay and upgrade or sell. There is a fast forward it's on the top left corner
Exactly what I was going to mention, everything else feels polished, done brilliantly just upgrading those damn towers is a chore. Other than that, brilliant game, great fun graphics, lovely backgrounds, good sounds. I like.
It looks like a fast forward button but it doesn't let the game run faster just launches the next wave earlier.
My iTunes review : As being a fanatic TD gamer (played most of the TD titles available)...i picked this game up as soon as this was released as i was oogling it already for some time. First of all the graphics are great, original, clean and well thought of. Every level is displayed in greyish colors...and the towers themselves are in red or blue...this way it easily recognisable what is placed where. Besides of this you will see all kind of animated things happening in the background which really makes these levels alive. Also when levelling up your tower you will see a clear difference between the levelled and the non levelled ones (tiny arms grow, more eyes can be seen). Btw...all towers are animated in a great way. Gameplay consists of tactically placing the right color of tower and upgrading them at the right moment. Coins can be gained when a enemy is killed (have to be picked up when dropped)...and with these coins you can buy new towers or upgrade them. Music and sounds fit this game quite well when looking at the cute setup and funny characters used in this game. Main menu is clean and easy to navigate...i only cannot find all gamecentre related info (edit : guess i was cross eyed...it is just in the middle at the bottom of the main menu...duh... ) What i really like is that when a level is finished you can click it and see what the previous score was. This gives me the urge to replay and better my score on a previous played level. Anwyays...yes it could be true that this maybe isn't really for the hardcore TD player...but this is a great and fantastic TD game for any casual gamer due to the cute setup and easy understandable gameplay. My score would be a 4.5 out of 5 as there are always things to iron out....for the rest it is a must buy for TD fans.
