Ok....Here it goes... So I finished syncing up and transferred my screen protectors over to the new one (With very little bubbles I might add!)... AND... (Drumroll).... Deathgrip!!! LoL, I would have guessed as much, I don't think you can fix it... But we'll see what they do about the issue, rumor has it that apple is telling employees not to do replacements for the deathgrip issue and also will not be giving out free bumpers... Either way I use a case so really the DG issue is a non-issue for me when I use a case, my problem all along was the no sim error, so anyways been using it for about 30 min. and it hasn't happened yet... *Fingers crossed* *Knocks on wood* Hope no one has to go through what I had to...
SUCCESS! I'd say that's the best you're gonna get for now mate. Just wait for the firmware update and have fun with your shiny new phone!
So does anyone think that they're passing it off as a software issue? Meaning their will be a software update and some will continue to have the problem, then they will maybe swap phones out as they come into the store, claiming the update should've fixed it?
Well at first I was doubtful, but there has been news about it possibly being fixed in an update, Apple seems pretty serious that it's just a software problem, and I don't think they would lie. But it just doesn't seem right, I still don't quite see how it can be resolved in an update, but we'll soon see.
If the rumours of a firmware patch turn and the reasons for the signal issues turn out to be true, then the problem is related to the radio controller in the baseband not properly scanning/changing frequencies to mitigate the signal loss. If that's the case, then a firmware patch should help solve most of the problem. The hardware issue will still be there, but there's a very good chance that properly hopping frequencies like it isn't doing now will make it unnoticeable.
EDIT: apologies folks - everywhere I said arstechnica, I mean anandtech. And here is there article: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3794/the-iphone-4-review/ I have yet to see any official statement from Apple saying that the problem is with the software/firmware. They have never said anything of the kind as far as I'm aware. Maybe there is an issue there as well, and the arstechnica review, which I highly recommend reading, says that there's an issue with the representation that "bars" give on any phone, as well as even numeric "signal strength". That that's not really what matters - what matters is signal to noise ratio. Well, until you get to a state of no signal at all. That's a different story. Anyway, there is a problem, it's been documented by many review sites, including anandtech. Bridging the gap causes a higher lose of signal strength then with most phones, although it is not usually so catastrophic, and generally the iPhone 4 manages drop free calls in far more places then any iPhone before it, even with the antenna issue. Having said that, anandtech says they could have avoided the issue entirely by applying a non-conductive coating to the antenna, and they may do that yet, but that won't help existing iPhone 4's. That will require replacement, and maybe they will offer that once they've started putting on said coating. In the mean time you can use a bumper case, which brings the signal loss down to a normal level, or you can try to avoid bridging the gap. The bumper case isn't perfect though, as noted in that same review, due to a too-small dock connector opening that prevents many 3rd party dock connector cables from working with it, such as found on many car interfaces and such. Some will probably work, though.
I don't get it... ...they already told you the antenna is on the outside, right? So, if you cover it up the antenna, what do you expect? But for the record, my 4 get's way better coverage then my old 3GS. I've noticed it doesn't drop out in known dead zones like the 3GS did.
Other phones have their antenna on the inside... covering them doesn't make such drastic changes to the reception, even with your hands over the outside of the phone's case.
So they did send me a refurbished unit, I checked the lifetime call usage and there is a day and a half worth of usage that I DID NOT DO! I'm back on the phone waiting for a supervisor, it's one thing to say I'm getting a refurb, but when I'm told BRAND NEW IN BOX, that's what I was expecting... And for anyone saying if it works like new and looks new quit complaining... STFU I paid $300 for a new device that works, not $300 for a used phone that looks new..
I completely agree. Gizmodo's review of the iPhone 4 is very insular. The iPhone 4 is a beautiful, powerful device. The reception issue is partly due to AT&T, which has questionable coverage. However, to fix all of your complaints about the new phone, just buy a damn case!! Unless you role in $100,000 a year, a $200-$300 phone IS AN INVESTMENT. That means you should take care of it. Personally, I feel the iPhone 4 is an AMAZING phone. Far superior to all other phones on the market. Go out and buy it. Everyone needs to stop being so pessimistic and just enjoy the phone! The technology is astounding! Most of these complaints are not based on opposing arguments, and are nearly all biased. IPhone 4= revolutionary.
Well I got them to give me a free case, and they will be shipping out a BRAND NEW for real this time? I hope so.. Jeebus this has been a fiasco, but If I can get a replacement phone brand new in box like I originally purchased and a free case, I guess I'll be happy
That's the way Brian! I may say a prayer for you later, I feel for you with all this trouble. Fingers crossed this time will be lucky (3rd time?).
Thx Sammy! Yea this will be the 3rd iphone in hand... I REALLY hope it comes in a retail box like I was promised this time! If it doesn't and they send another refurb or something wrong like a 16gb instead of the 32, or charge shipping or don't give my free case I'm done... I will send my device direct to Steve jobs with a crApple wallpaper and tell him to stick it up his ass... Thanks for the support though! I told the supervisor after he assured me this time would be BRAND NEW, that "ok you made that right, but in the end what do I get for my trouble? 6 hours of calls $1400 charged in holds on my CC and the frustration I got from this whole ordeal?" He says he can't do much, so I asked well how about a case? "Oh I can do that!" He says...and with that he's not only making it right but now I'm happy because I'm getting something extra out of all this... While it may just be a case and not much of a value, it's the idea of it that counts, and by next week hopefully this will all just be a thing of the past! BTW got the white bumper, as I think it looks sweet on the black phone... Backordered til Jul 15th though...
