Short answer: YES! I use my iPod touch for gaming most of the time indoors, and listening to music when I'm on the road. The graphics and controls are amazing yet it can fill in your pocket perfectly. The other handhelds like Sony PSP and Nintendo DS either don't have the stunning graphics or lacks touch control, and none of them is as slim as an iPod touch. The battery isn't that bad if you don't play 3D games all the time, it could last about more than 3 hours for non-3D games and 1 1/2 hour for 3D games, I think it's enough if you remember to fully charge it before going out. The best part is, if you have an iPhone and it runs out of battery, you won't be able to get any calls or text messages, so you might need to take caution when playing games on it, but with an iPod touch you could just play until the battery runs out, and it won't be much of a big deal.
A fair point that until apple adress it, will keep the handheld market alive. Can you imagine an iDevice with 10 hours battery life? :O ....Something just moved in my pants..
Bought my iPod Touch as a replacement for a dead PDA, and have a ton of game on it, in fact most of my gaming these days is on this device, primarily because I have it with me all the time. No way I'd sell my DS though, I've got plenty of great games for that as well, I still don't like virtual D-Pads, and as it was mentioned, it's batter life is much much longer than the iPod.
It's dinner time now in Denmark (6 pm / 18:00). And I have to eat I will make a list of the free and 99c games that I play later in the evening (Paris time).
Oh - I forgot: I have an AppShopper account: Most of my games/apps: http://appshopper.com/user/jyhjyh My wishlist: http://appshopper.com/user/jyhjyh/wishlist Warning! I'm a female - and I love strategy, puzzle and Tower defense games among others. PS! Many of the games I got for $.00 because of price drops.
Hmmm... I have my iPod touch solely for gaming, but I don't soley use the iPod for gaming. I thought that the ipod touch was so much better than my psp... Then I played my psp again. My Psp is awesome. While the iPod is getting a ton better- (look at modern combat, ravensword, gang$tar, etc) the psp does have an advantage. Compare the Syphon Filter games to the shooters on the iTouch... No competition. Syphon Filter has more levels, better graphics, and way more weapons and gagets. But, this comes at a price. Modern Combat, 7 bucks, Approximately 200 mbs. (I think...) Syphon Filter, 26 bucks, 1.2 Gbs. So, it depends on what kind of gaming you want. Short and simple, or long and complex. That's my two cents at least.
for people like me, it is more than worth it .. I can bring my ipod touch into office meeting and act like I was jotting something where in truth I was flicking my hand againts horde of zombie .. can't do that with PSP nor DS I guess ..
Purely for gaming? Well maybe if you also use it for music and movies, then it's worth it. Otherwise no it's not, because iDevice games will never succeed the quality and complexity of PSP games. Then again PSP has music and movies too, but just lacks the touch screen. So in my opinion the difference in price is solely for the touch screen and neat design.
imo the iPod is great for little casual games, almost all the games I have are small ones that you can play for a few minutes at a time or hours. big games like RPGs and Gameloft's don't work for me. I have been using it to listen to music too
The ipod touch is the best gaming device. Where else can you get an old school rpg like The Quest for $6 and expansions as low as $2?
If you're more of a casual player, whether it be because of time constraints or you just like bite sized games more, then the iPod Touch is the better choice IMO. If you're looking for tons of games with depth(such as RPG's), then I'd go for the DS or PSP. Games on the DS/PSP are still way better if you're looking for the hardcore experience. Awesome fighting games, racing games, rpg's, platformers, you name it. Can be found on the DS and PSP. The iPod is great for smaller games though and if you're also in the market for a music/video player, then the iPod Touch is an excellent choice.
Without a doubt dude. Cheap, awesome games surpassing games I have on the DS at prices that usually go no higher than $10. I just purchased Nazi Zombies, a complete port, for $10. Plus you'll have great music and movie playback, along with youtube and internet browsing. It's more than worth it. Just get the new ones, the old ones are kinda becoming obsolete.
+1 I bought the 1st gen. Touch for gaming as the way to control games was different to the DS/PSP, namely movement with the accelerometer and touch screen controls - this was something I wanted to experience that I hadn't experienced with my DS (only touch screen controls) and PSP (no touch and accelerometer). I always thought the Touch/iPhone was suited to driving games and I think this is where it does excel as using the accelerometer to steer is quite fun and certainly different to using a d-pad/analog stick However for me, the Touch is used only for casual gaming - I still prefer to play the more in depth games on my DS and PSP.
Yeah I agree with you... Mostly... I don't really know of any awesome fighting games, racing games, or rpg's on the DS. Except lately, the iTouch has been getting more hardcore... Ravensword, Eliminate, Modern Combat, The DS has nothing on these. For know though, the PSP rules! Just my honest opinion.
I meant in general, spread out on the DS and PSP. Racing games on the DS? Well I only need Mario Kart, that game is awesome. As for RPG's, are you kidding? The DS is an RPG machine.
Haha just giving you a hard time. Yeah, Mario Kart is one of the best out there. Well, RPG's on the DS are different than normal RPG's. They're all more.... Zenonia esc. Not bad, but I'm more of a, what is it, "western" RPG gamer. But the DS has Zelda, and will always have zelda, so I'll give it credit for that.
Ahh okay, western RPG's. Yeah the DS has more JRPG's, which are the ones I enjoy the most. If you haven't played Mass Effect for the 360 then play it someday before you die. It's awesome, good good western type of RPG/shooter
Buy a PSP, hack it, there you have the best portable device; you get double the enjoyment when hacking it as you can use it at it's fullest potential.IMO. Just hacked mine today and its the most fun I've ever had on a handheld. The iPod Touch is a nice device for casual gamers, but it's pretty much more of a media player than a gaming device. Ultimately it boils down to your interests. Hardcore then go for PSP, Casual and interested in Social/Media apps and casual games go for iPod. They both have hardware suited for different capacities. I know, I'm going to get flamed by one of the 12 year olds on this site....
Geez, how many times do I have to repeat this? iDevices were made for multimedia, then got gaming added onto it later. PSP's and DS's were made for gaming, then got multimedia added onto it later/multimedia was added on the same time. PSP & DS > iDevices in gaming. The only reasons you guys are always on the iDevices more is because you carry it around much more often than a PSP or a DS. Think about it: if you were going outside and you wanted music, you'd bring your iPod Touch, not your PSP. Then if you had time, you'd just play your iPod Touch because you don't have your PSP with you right now. An iPhone is a even bigger reason why you always have it. It's your phone. You HAVE to have it with you all the time, which means whenever you have free time you just whip out your iPhone to play games, not your PSP/DS because you don't have it with you. iPhone is great for small games, and there are medium games like Zenonia or RealRacing. There are also possibly some quality games like Modern Sandstorm: Warfare and Assassin's Creed. But to be honest, none of those can compare to what PSPs and DSs have: BUTTONS and BETTER QUALITY GAMES. If you actually think that App Store games are better quality, then you must be crazy. PSP/DS will forever dominate the gaming industry. iPods will forever dominate the music industry. It's as simple as that.
