The 3g Touch didn't have as large of an update as predicted, but if you want faster speeds, voice command, or 64gb memory, then go for it. Otherwise, I would wait another year. But, geez, decide for yourself!
He was only asking for a bit of advice, it's been known to happen. As far as I'm concerned it depends on what you've got right now. If I had a 2nd gen I probably wouldn't, but since I have a 1st gen I will possibly be looking at one around xmas time, assuming I've got the money.
Didn't you answer your own question there... you already have a camera. ... I personally think I'll upgrade if/when there are a few new games that utilize the more powerful new touch. If that doesn't happen w/in the next 8-9 months, I'll wait for the next upgrade.
No camera? Apple fails, looks like my money this years going to a ps3 , Does the ipod touch 3g at least have a mic?
No they won't. There was a statement from Steve Jobs as to why there wasn't a camera. It was somewhere along the lines of how the ipod touch is marketed as an entry level to the appstore and they just wanted to keep costs down and not have camera. Also interferes with iphone.
so lame. I would have upgraded if it had a camera. They would have opened such a huge new audience to all the camera and video apps in the app store, and should have added a microphone to make that stupid voice recording app usable from the device itself. Good prices but a friggen rip in the feature department. I would have paid $30-50 more for more features.
Lamest move and "upgrade" by apple since it started ipod touches. $400, for something that's basically the same. only a bit faster. Fail.
LOL...It's not "only a bit" faster. It IS way faster. The updated ARM Cortex A8 @ 600MHZ is documented to be 50% above the 2G Touch's ARM 11 @ 533 MHz. Even a few weeks back, devs have already started utilizing pixel shaders in games that would only run smoothly on OpenGL 2.0 thus these games are only compatible for the 3GS. Now the 3G touch can run those. Soon more high quality games will follow or should we say "premium versions" with kick-ass graphics that'll be labeled "3GS and 3G touch" games. I'm climbing in on the OpenGL 2.0 wagon for future pixel shaders gaming euphoria. I'm sorry for those still crying for not being able to take pictures of themselves with an iPod camera.
I have to state this though: Because of no camera and no digital compass, I'm honestly now torn between upgrading my 1st gen touch to the new 3Gs based touch, or getting a ZuneHD. Don't laugh. If you've read any of my previous rants (yeah, I admit it, I rant...), I really didn't agree with Apple's decision to go true next gen so soon. I still think it would've been better to wait a year or so. The main reason being that developers are still gonna target the 1st and 2nd "gen" devices, especially since Apple is still selling the 2nd "gen" iPhone and iPod touch devices but for a lot less than they were. If the 3Gs based devices aren't going to be the primary target of developers for the foreseeable future (particularly in light of Apple not ceasing the sales of iPhone 3G and 2nd "gen" touch), then aside from a coming handful of games...why upgrade now? Most developers, it seems, won't really even bother with the new hardware due to increased dev costs alone. On the other side of the coin the ZuneHD I know will have games I won't be able to get on iPhone/touch at all. So...y'know...I don't mind the idea of owning two mobile platforms. I've got enough pockets. And I am a gamer, after all. Multisystem owner at that. Truth be told, I might be that guy on the subway you see pull out a DS or PSP once the iPod touch battery goes low, or vice versa, or pull out the ol' 1st "gen" touch when I want to read something (Stanza). One more device ain't gonna kill me. I was ramped up to get a 3rd "gen" touch...but now I think I'll wait and see. See what 3Gs specific stuff is coming out, and see what MS has planned for ZuneHD in terms of app support.
I agree with everything you said in your post. I own the same 2G and haven't had much of an issues playing even the newest games. They made a serious mistake in not releasing an 8GB with the same hardware specs as the 32 & 64 GB models. (wheres the 16GB?) And with no camera as lots of people thought, it leaves me on the fence. The Zune HD however, may not get the support we're looking for. MS already announced that they are discontinuing the Zune linup and only the Zune HD would remain. There is "rumor" that they maybe working on a hand held gaming system to compete though. The system would have a camera, would support touch screen and have the same features as the Zune HD as a "pocket computer" with a browser (IEm7), video and mp3 playback. No word from MS but someone posted a concept shot awhile back the people have speculated on. Here are some of the quotes: Actual Size?
Finally caved in ... just got the ipod touch 64gb from apple.com. 425 bucks down the drain. Better arrive soon!
Sweet!! Getting mine soon as well. Why not? Multiple gaming devices, right? I also have my sights on the ZuneHD development but honestly, I don't see them put out numerous games and apps anytime soon. We'll see.
