My 3g contract is running out, so its likely i will pick up an iphone 4, seeing as it has a much higher resolution (as far as i have understood something similar to the ipad) which games should one buy now ? ie its silly to buy a "low res" iphone game now when in a month i have to rebuy a "high res" ipad version. Anyone heard anything about this, how its going to be resolved?
I don't think the iPhone 4 will be able to run iPad apps. Therefore at the moment regular apps should be the only choice (upscaled similarly to what iPad does) or iPhone 4 specific HD versions in the future.
There won't be separate apps to buy. From what I understand devs will be given a tool that will enable them to make their games look crisper or something like that.
I think you are talking about universal apps like the apps that work at native resolution on both iPhone and iPad. I wonder if there will be device specific games like there are for iPad. It will be interesting to see how confusing this turns out to be for developers and consumers. -Greg
Hi, I'm a developer and I can shed some light on this: For the new iPhone it will be possible to create universal apps (just like there are universal apps for the iPad right now). There is a possibility that some of the apps you currently buy, will be upgraded to a universal build. When you install that update, the app will be shown in high-resolution on your new iPhone. However, it depends entirely on the developer whether they support universal builds, or if they create a specific version for the new iPhone. It would be best to check their website and decide to buy the game now, or wait for the HD version.
If you create a universal app does that imply that it works at native resolution for old iPhone, new iPhone, and iPad or can it support a subset of those (that's where it would get really confusing)? -Greg
Yes, I agree. I hope Apple doesn't make the same mistakes as Windows Mobile once did (it had a very big number of resolutions and there was confusion all over the place). Right now I'm not sure what will happen when you install a universal iPhone/iPad app on the new iPhone. My first guess would be that it creates a low-resolution screen to make the game think it runs in a low-resolution mode (thus scaling up the graphics). It would be a problem if the current universal applications don't update for the new iPhone (in that case they shouldn't advertise being universal from the moment the new iPhone is available). I think Apple should state clearly if the application supports the iPad, low-resolution iPhone and/or high-resolution iPhones in the App Store.
ok thanks for the reply. this bit was the important bit It would be best to check their website and decide to buy the game now, or wait for the HD version.
