I am seriously considering moving to the iTouch and ditching my iPhone 3G next year unless the 4G is amazing.

I passed on the 3Gs because it wasn't a huge upgrade and my contract does not expire until next year with AT&T (can't upgrade until Dec 09 anyway).

While I hate carrying more than one device around (thus I use the iPhone) the monthly AT&T bills are really getting to me. Since I am around Wifi almost 24/7 now I think I can lose the iPhone and go with a cheap cell and another carrier that gets good coverage in my area.

Anyone else here with only an iPhone thinking of doing this? I know I can unlock and go with T-Mobile but their coverage in my area is horrid especially away from major cities (I travel a lot).

EDIT: Oops, damn. Can a mod move this to the lounge please?

Nope but next year is the end of the AT&T exclusitivity so yea wait til next year and see and next year will either be 21 mbp or 4g speeds so I'll consider sticking to an iPhone

I'm ditching the iPhone also. Contract up in 2 months! I've invested too much money in apps and games, so I'm going to get a iPod touch and buy a real phone.

  4. Nope. In fact I went in the other direction: I used to have both devices, and eventually sold my Touch when the 3GS came out, because the upgrades were significant enough to render my Touch redundant.

I got the 3Gs with subsidized price, so that may color my perspective; still, as far as I am concerned it was a huge upgrade. Twice the memory capacity, 3-5 times as fast, a camera that's at least 4 times better (not to mention that it shoots great video), 30% more battery life -- the enclosure may not be different, but otherwise it's a brand new phone.

That said, if you don't really use the iPhone as a professional tool (and take advantage of always-on 3g connectivity), it does make sense to avoid the AT&T bill and go with a iPod Touch.

You mean a landline? How is the iPhone not a "real phone"?

Sigh... iPhone is not a real phone, because it is a toy (entertainment). Ok ok let's be fair... it's a smartphone. I'm going back to a simple Motorola phone that makes and receives calls and the same for text messages and... wait for it... wait.... here it comes....drum roll please...I said drum roll please!... MMS.

nah, i love my iPhone - I bought the first gen iphone at launch and just upgraded to the 3gs

I like the simplicity of having my phone, camera/camcorder, portable gaming device, web browser, navigation system and iPod all on one device.

Plus, I can't stand the shiny mirrored, scratch-prone backing that is on the iTouch's

See -- you don't have to make a rude remark (the iPhone is a toy) to make your point. Lots of us use iPhones to manage businesses and play games. But I take your point about having a simpler phone. If you don't need a smartphone, why have one?

By the way, as far as I am concerned, MMS is a toy function.

MMS support was blocked due to AT&T and how is the iPhone a toy? My father manage his business online with it from the apps and web browser. Also btw MMS is a kids version of email. So have fun with a kiddy function :p :)

I am aware of that (who knows if Apple will stay exclusive with AT&T) but have read AT&T won't be rolling out 4G until at least 2011 while other carriers are already rolling 4G out now. AT&T is just a monolith that is too slow moving for these fast paced times. AT&T just recently added cell towers for their 3G service starting at their Atlanta based headquarters this summer. Responses in Atlanta to that change have been mixed as far as noticing any type of change in service.

I am just tired of AT&T's dicking around, it is getting old and makes me miss Cingular. Still no MMS  and tethering by end of year

Seems more practical to me now going with iPod only and a cheap throwaway cell with a cheap plan should work for me. I will still hate having more than one device but won't mind the heavier pockets with extra cash.

You must not get out much, not everyone has a phone capable of getting pictures through their email.

Sorry you took that personally. I didn't mean to offend your precious. ;)

The best cell phone I ever had was actually a Sony Ericsson. It was a very small candy bar style but the battery lasted forever and calls on my end and the other end was crystal clear.

I've used WinMo, BB and iPhone "smartphones" and while each had their pluses the actual phone suffered on each and every one as far as call quality. Thus another reason I am considering going with a simple cell and iPod for other heavier uses.

Unfortunately, even so-called "simple" phones are crammed with functions these days, and saddled with awful user-interfaces that make basic tasks like checking your voice mail a chore. Frankly, just having visual voice mail makes the iPhone the best phone I've ever had -- though it helps that AT&T's 3G coverage in the Boston area is decent (I'm aware that I have it good compared to other folk).
