Who will win in the long run? I personally think, with iOS, the mobile gaming market has changed. With a couple of big companies and a lot of small independent developers, I see more potential for the iOS plattform, such as iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. 3 different devices but same same. I think, 3DS won't reach as much sold units as the old DS did, what do you think?
I thank Apple and Steve Jobs because thanks to them, Nintendo is really stepping up their game. The lineup of upcoming 3DS games is unreal.
This is about right. Still, as spiffyone would put it, they compete in pretty different markets. I'm writing this on my 3gs, something I would never do on a 3DS. Within seconds, I could crank up Pro Zombie Soccer and have a blast. But there are plenty of 3DS games I want to play, too. The real competition is between the 3DS and the PSP; judging by today's presentations, Sony got creamed. This is in the wrong section, BTW.
There's no wrong answer, it's all a matter of preference. As a developer, I would love to make games for both. especially Synth Racing, especailly after seeing their Star Fox revival. (link to Star Fox 3DS pics)
Without a hardware controller and buttons iOS can never win this battle. It is like comparing Paralympics with real Olympic Games. Maybe a handicapped athlete can win in some special disciplines, but he will lose if he has to compete in regular disciplines.
IMO, totally different markets so no point discussing that. Also, this is an iOS forum, iOS gaming is bound to win. Now between 3DS and PSP, 3DS will stay in the lead, no matter the new campaign they're (PSP) doing. Amongst the consoles however, I do see the rise of the PS3 over the Wii if they play the cards right, I was pretty impressed (altho I will forever love my Zeldas and Metroids and Marios). Also about 3DS reaching as many sold units as the DS, which version of the DS are you referring to? DS, Lite, DSi, XL? nintendo has had tons of DS versions and all of them have been top sellers (dunno about the XL on this one), so there's no reason why the 3DS which (IMO) changes a lot more than the other versions did, wouldn't keep it that way. Also isn't this the wrong section?
I have "embraced virtuality" but no virtual pad (for now) will be as responsive as, say, a real joystick. Also, unless you're talking about the iPad, there probably isnt enough space for the buttons. And well, you can't really compare gaming on the iOS and on any other console, the games are not in the same level, ever (unless it is a port from a game that came out years ago), not to say gaming in the iOS is crap because I love my iTouch for that, but is just totally different levels in too many dimensions.
I agree, the two markets aren't really comparable at all. Between the handhelds, since we are talking about the long run future, I think that the 3DS will stay ahead by some distance if action isn't taken by Sony. I don't really have any doubt about the units it could sell, really. Even the incremental upates sold successfully, so one that is a large upgrade (IMO the largest since the launch of the original DS) is likely to haul in even more sales, in my opinion.
I was playing it a bit tongue in cheek, there. To be serious, I think it depends on the game. I've never been particularly in love with either PSP or DS controls -- they both pale in comparison to consoles or (my favorite) mouse and keyboard. I much (much, much, much) prefer playing Meteor Blitz over Super Stardust Portable, and I think dual stick shooters in general work much better on a touch screen than on a device with a single stick. Surprisingly, I think that slower platformers hold up pretty well on a touch screen, though I agree that analog controls are better for twitchy platformers and action games (then again, look at something like Espgaluda 2). And when it comes to more turn-based games with multiple options or point-and-click adventures (such as RPGs or strategy games) I much prefer a touchscreen to tap-tapping an analog stick to cycle through options. It's like typing on an iPhone keyboard. Some people will never get used to it, and will always prefer their slide-out keyboards. Me, I'm much faster on my 3Gs than I ever was on my Blackberry. Different strokes, different folks.
Win in what way? The iPhone is gonna remain insanely successful, but not on the strength of it's games. The 3DS is likely to continue to dominate consoles sales purely on the strength of it's games. So gamewise... I'd put my bets on the 3DS.
http://www.siliconera.com/2010/06/15/super-street-fighter-iv-3d-edition-screens/ The also had screenshots of the Metal Gear on the 3DS. I swear, it looks very similar to Peace Walker, if not better.
I'm personally not going to buy a 3ds (because I still think i'd look like a dbag walking around with it) but their lineup of games absolutely kills AppStore games. In my opinion, Apple should start making their own AAA titles for the AppStore if they want to compete.
I agree with this. I probably won't get a 3DS, but if I do, I'll never use it in public. I can play games on my iPhone in public without getting weird looks (quite a feat, I know ), but I'd feel so stupid playing a DS or 3DS.
