Fire Emblem series. Would keep me addicted more than any other game for the iDevice. Not a single iDevice game right now has kept me hooked for a few weeks yet, except Plants vs Zombies, but I only play that like 5min a day now.

I assume you're talking about handheld consoles when you say console controls are better than iOS controls. Well that's not true for everyone. I myself love the the touch screen on my iPhone and I like it much more than the PSP's or 3DS' controls. Especially for TPS/FPS and racing games, I find those games much easier to control on my iPhone than on the PSP or 3DS.

Back on topic, It's extremely unlike that Nintendo will ever come out with an iOS game. And I wouldn't really care if they did. Mario, Pokemon, Zelda etc are all franchises I've enjoyed in the past, but now I just wish they'd go away.

    New technology

Just to add in a different factor ('cos everyone was ganging up on spartanmastah and it seemed unfair :p )

A while ago Apple (and I think Microsoft too?) filed new patents which looked like they had ideas for making touch screens tactile. So you'd be able to physically feel the shapes on the screen.

That kind of tech could change things even more in Apple's favour.

  5. I also have to disagree that handheld games are dying. Whilst iOS game development has created some really unique and fun games, the DS has also contributed a lot of amazing, unique and creative games too, even more so I would say.

I have a 3DS and whilst I haven't played much of it lately, I don't regret my purchase. The PS2 also started off rather slowly, yet a bunch of quality games got the ball rolling. It's the same with most consoles I think.

I'm not the world's biggest Nintendo fan, but they know what they're doing. They've been in the games industry long enough to manage their strategies. The only problem with Nintendo, in my mind, is that they can be rather stubborn when it comes to trying new things and as a result they do feel somewhat behind the other gaming giants, but they still manage to create quality titles that other companies can only dream of.

I'm also not used to iPhone controls yet, they sometimes feel alien and archaic to me. Some games seem to handle better than others, but I have this habit of keeping my fingers resting on the screen when I don't mean to: it's because my fingers would rest on buttons without pressing them. This habit makes it difficult for me to play some touch screen games though, especially platformers, as I always end up moving in different directions :(

But, on the actual topic, I think Warioware would work perfectly on an iPhone.

There is a game called "Astro Ranch" that plays similar to Animal Crossing. Never played that far into it though due to the constant crashing.

A few Nintendo games I think would work well on the iOS: Punch-Out, and The Guardian Legend.

I don't think people would care about the iPhone if Nintendo came out with their own phone.

The thing is Nintendo's normal handheld base is kids... A couple of years ago most kids asked for a DS for gaming - that has now changed and they ask their parents for iPods. The parents look at the price of games on handheld platforms and the price of the hardware then compare the price of iOS games and the hardware.

    These conclusions are made:

    1. iOS games are cheaper.
    2. Nintendo games are expensive.
    3. iOS hardware is more expensive.

BUT if you buy a few Nintendo games at $40/60 then things start to look different. Parents love the fact that they can give their kids an iTunes gift card and let them make their choices... Plus iOS has free games as well. The crux of the problem is Nintendo has not and will not except cheap software to sell because they want big profit. IF they don't change then they will lose in 1 to 2 years. When their profits start falling at a greater loss then I think they will go down the Sega route because they will have to survive.

If you don't move with what the kids want then you are doomed and these days kids want an iPod and the choice of cheap and free games.

If I was Nintendo I would get out of the console market and just make software. Why? Because technology is converging and it is greatly accelerated in the mobile space. The games console of the future is a portable device that is a phone, music player, handheld console and a high end gaming console, a portable TV, and a device you dock into your home entertainments system for the high end experience.

The ultimate goal for Apple is to be the number one seller of a device like that and they have the money to do it.

And lets be honest Nintendo cannot compete with that.

I have a iPhone 4, a Sony PSP, a Nintendo 3DS. I don't really play PSP much. iPhone 4 is fun, can do lots of things. 3DS is good too, Play 3D games, and also play games that iPhone don't have. Some games is nicer to play on 3DS, some nicer on iPhone.

Is fun playing Asphalt on iPhone, But is easier to play on 3DS. SAMURAI WARRIORS is nice on 3DS. Now the problem is 3DS needs more games and also hope that the price of the games will be cheaper.

Hope Nintendo will provide Ambassadors free Let’s Golf 3D too, Pokemon GBA game?

I'm never going to say it won't happen, cause that's exactly what I thought about Sega...we will never see Sonic on other systems. But oh well, crap happens...Nintendo may very well end up like Sega in the future and I wouldn't be surprised if they did, so I won't ever doubt mario on an iphone that isn't emulated.

Anyways, never really liked majority of Nintendo games, but wouldn't mind seeing either Zelda, Fire Emblem, or a Super Mario 2D platformer on the iPad or iPhone.

Your theory is flawed from the very beginning by assuming the majority of DS owners are 'kids'.

Just wondering, what age range would you define as a 'kid'?

It's more in terms of all my nephews and nieces a couple of years ago were constantly asking their parents for a DS and now they constantly ask for iPods and some of them have them now. And my friends children are the same... So the conclusion is kids now ask for iPods. When kids don't hanker for Nintendo product then Nintendo are in trouble.

Another thing I have observed on family gatherings, in a house with wi-fi, the kids with iPods gather around and recommend games to each other and download the free ones that are highly rated or maybe buy one if it is highly recommended.

The point here is the whole nature of game sharing and the internet has changed what kids perceive as gaming culture. Nintendo does not realise this and people brought up on Nintendo hardware are not grasping that the gaming culture has shifted. I know people who have never played games in a serious way, they get an iphone, use iTunes for music, then they get curious about the app store and start playing games.

They are not interested in flash graphics or 3D but in a good casual experience in short bursts. It seems that market is a gold mine and millions or in EAs case billions are spent on owning this space.

I'm afraid Nintendo will go the way of Sega... Which to me is not a bad thing.

Things move so fast now. Only a few years ago the iphone didn't exist. Like the main guy from id software was saying, all of this (iOS boom) has come about during 1 game development cycle (Rage in id's case).

So he starts a game and everything is normal. And then by the time they finish it the gaming industry has changed!

So perhaps, of the big players, those who can adapt to the new environment the quickest will win. Technological and economic evolution I guess.

And if the rumours are true that Apple will have devices that can occupy budget and/or mid range price points... it's only going to get harder for everyone else.

I own a PSP, iPhone and 3DS. I play the PSP the most. The 3DS a little. The iPhone, basically not at all. I still use various smartphone features everyday. I just don't use it as a gaming device anymore. To each their own.

Funny thing is, there isn't a single first-party Nintendo franchise that I enjoy playing. Not one. And, believe me, I have played them all. And, in my estimation, they are garbage. Each and every one of them. They all fail, without fail.

By I am not a casual gamer. So, there you go. I'm a Battlefield/Halo/Gears of War/Call of Duty guy. This sort of junk don't appeal to me.

If you want to say that there is some sort of handheld gaming war going on here, then I would like to point that when it comes to the actual quality of the games themselves, Apple is losing here and losing badly. Yes, iOS games are incredibly cheap, but you often get what you paid for in life. These iOS games are often times paper thin in terms of all-around content and polish. As a lifetime dedicated gamer, I can see right through them.

Oh god that's hilarious. So Nintendo's franchises are junk, iOS has absolutely no "hardcore" games and all your examples of good games are wholly generic FPS/TPS games that fit into one tiny segment on the gaming market. I guess if you sit around playing Halo and think that's the end all / be all of gaming then you would hate the CAVE shumps, sims, unique original concepts and classic retro games iOS has to offer in spades. "Hardcore" gamers crack me up!

SEGA was in such bad shape before the Dreamcast that they had no shelf presence for over a year and that was only after three rapid succession failures. Nintendo isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

As an old school gamer I'd love to see the Super Mario Bros. trilogy, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Zelda III, The original Metriod trilogy and so fourth on iOS but it'll never happen.
