How much better is iphone 4 than 3gs in gaming?

Everybody knows that iphone 4 has an A4 chip running at 1GHZ(512mb ram) where 3gs has a cortex A8 chip running at 600Mhz(256mb ram). As the Graphics chip is same in both devices and the iphone 4 has retina display, I think this is not as great jump as 3gs had from 3g. What do you think? Will we see games that utilize advanced graphics in near future?

I'd say it's a jump, but the move from 3G to 3GS was a leap. The iPhone 4 is more a refinement of the 3GS, but a pretty hefty refinement at that. The thing is, you won't see too many games taking advantage of those new features due to the massive fragmentation between iPod Touch 2G owners up to iPhone 4 users.

wel remember that the the retina screen has 4 times the number of pixels....so things look alot better when they take advantage of that screen..which seems to be happening fast...

Well the 4g will definately assuredly push a ton more polygons than previous phones, however it's fillrate remains just as bad.

The only real solution for fill rate is multiple cores for mobiles as higher clocks (for fill rate) is just a terrible idea with temps and power consumption.

So in english: 4g gives you more geometry but not necessarily more action on the screen.

Well I can't speak for the 3GS unfortunately, but I've gone from a 3G to a 4, so the difference to me specifically is massive. :)

Difference? Yes. But only on speeds when you launch apps, loading times, etc. And if some apps crash on the older devices due to RAM issues, they're less likely to happen on the 4.

Will games be better on the 4? No. Majority of the games are developed for the iDevices that supports even the oldest generation iPhones and touches because, well, it's all about the Benjamins. When the 3GS and 3rd Gen touch came out up to this day, you can only count the games and apps that are developed and designed to take advantage of the new faster hardware and latest OpenGL version of the 3GS. I do hope I'm wrong but I don't see that changing anytime soon, gyroscope or not. Yes, it's all about the Benjamins.

I'm really looking forward to trying Eliminate: Gun Range. I wanna see the gyroscope in action.

Isn't the time has come to consider 3GS as the base device for 3d games or atleast give us owners of 3rd gen or better something worth it? Does denying ios4 for 1st gen means they are out the picture now?

According to a new report 75% of new iPhone owners are those upgraded from iphone 3G and 2G.

I want that too. Tell that to the devs.

But seriously, if you'll think about it, its less likely to happen.

On a different forum, some iPad owners are pissed that there are not much iPad exclusive games and the iPhone owners are laughing at them.

And at this minute, owners of first gen iPhones and iPod touches are not exactly thrilled with this thread. :p

Nevertheless, all it comes down to is the game developers and their decision to either cater to a select group, or to everyone. Chi-ching!!!!

I went from a 3G to the 4 and it seems like a major upgrade to me. The screen really is beautiful and load times are much quicker. The Gun Range game is pretty fun btw
