Dear TArcaders! I am writing to ask for an advice and guidelines maybe. I want to set up a hot-spot in my flat, to surf the web via my iPod. In my PC I have installed Ethernet card and connected modem. Please, tell me what do I need to create access point at my place? Router, adapter, network card? Do You have any prophosals? Also, could someone explain me how these devices work and if do they convert modem data to Wi-Fi or what? Sorry for such noobie questions. Though I am swift in computer science I had never an interest in networking. Best, Jarek PS: One more thing. What should I do if my iPod detects free hot-spot, connects with it but I can't access the web? There is still "Updating" in Weather widget, twitteriffic and gMail. I have tried solutions presented on Apple site (with lease renewal and reseting network data).
Just get a wireless router. It's actually really simple. Basically, an ethernet cables goes from the modem to the router, and another from the router to the PC. You use the PC to configure it, and you don't even need to be plugged into the PC for it to work anymore. If you find free WiFi and it doesn't work, it's probably just a signal that isn't connected to the internet. Some people just use signals like that to share files, not internet.
Thank You guys for answers. But router is for sharing network with many computers, isn't? And its cost is pretty high. And how is it with router configuration? Does it work when PC is turmed off?
I just had to click one button and I was able to create a hot spot. I have an internet card so Idk if that made the process easier or not.
All I have is a router, it's got the modem built into it. I just plug the router into the wall and it sends the wi-fi signal to my laptop (and anything else with internet), simple as that. It stays on all the time.
A router is for sharing between multiple computers, in this case your desktop and iPod Touch. A router sits between your internet connection and all your devices so you don't have to rely on your PC being on to use your iPod touch. Another option is to add WiFi to your computer and set up an ad-hoc network between the PC and the iPod touch. This would be cheaper then buying a router but you'll be relying on your PC for your wireless connection and it can be kind of a pain in the ass to set up.
Yes, this solution is called adapter. I have seen it already, but it would be terrible to surf the web only if my PC is on. So, the only way is to buy router? All of them have pre-built modems? Because when i was installing network at home I have recieved a modem device, so now it would have to go to lamus. I have seen a good D-Link DI-524 at proce of about 27$. It is not that much, I could afford it, but the problem is if it will really work on my PC. Is such device connected via USB or network card?
The router sits between the modem and the computer, ethernet both from the modem and to the computer. You can connect some of them via USB but ethernet is always faster.
Maybe they are, but I have no choice. Adapter is not good solution because of terrible configuration and access with on PC only. Router is the only way. Except network card via USB but it works in the similar way like adapter does. There is nothing to laugh from
I still a use separate wireless router and modem. I used to have another 8 port router between the two as well.
I have bought TP-Link router and connected it with modem. Both devices are looking fairly good, but the most important is, that I have successfully created Wi-Fi spot and now I am surfing the web from my bed. Thank You guys for all advice, it helped me a lot. Best regards,
