Not sure I understand this? There is a HD version and an LD version, but either will run on anything (older than 3G)
It's good to see a solid turn-based strategy game get out on the front page. I'm sure that more people play RTS games, but this game looks good enough to tempt even some of the power-users to give turn-based a shot.
Yea but the RTS games on the app store have been greatly lacking. TBS games seem play very well on iDevices
i just seen this and my childhood came flashing infront of my eyes. All i can think about now is Advance Wars. Finally a great looking, solid turn based RTS that i will buy. Looking foward to this game.
A universal version would be one executable that provides native iPhone/iTouch and iPad support (that includes high-res graphics and adjusting the UI as needed), such as Carcassone, Battleheart, Aralon, etc. I think we understand that the LD version runs on iPad and you can play it at 2x. However, HD versions of games invariably run on iPad only, with Rage HD being a notable exception. How is your HD version configured? Can it be run on an iPhone4? To me, the logical platform breakdown is an LD version for iPhone 3GS and earlier/ iPod Touch 3rd Gen and earlier, then HD for iPhone 4/ iPad. If you're making 1024x768 graphics, you're already at a sufficient resolution for Retina support and if you already have Retina assets in the LD version, I don't see why you're not doing a Universal build already. That said, while splitting out the platforms as I outlined keeps older device owners from complaining about the size of their executables for high-res graphics they can't see, iPhone4 owners will invariably complain about the increased price. Still, it seemed to largely work out for Rage/ Rage HD, and people who didn't want to spend the extra cash could simply download the low-res version whether they had an iPhone 4 or not. I believe ID found the people downloaded the HD version by a significant margin when given the choice.
Thanks for the explanation. To answer your question, we plan on uploading four builds tomorrow. HD and LD with "Lite" and "Full" of each. Either HD or LD will run on all platforms newer than 3G. Obviously the LD version will run with scaling on high resolution devices. The HD version will run natively at the full size on both iPad and Retina anything. The free to play lite version has five missions in and an IAP button to upgrade to the full version without having to download anything new. (Users can buy the HD version to run on 3GS and it will indeed run, but it won't look any better until you upgrade your phone. So you'd be better off financially by buying the LD version, or better off charitably by buying the dearer HD one Despite some predictable whingeing, I think a pricetag of 2.99 is fair for this game, comparing it with others generally etc. However, we want a separate LD version to test pricing at the 99c level. After a month or two, that 99c version might well go back up to 2.99 if we aren't selling triple the quantity. (At that time we might well release a universal app just to make it easier for the customers) The 99c version will be clearly labelled as an introductory price. We are new to this market and still getting over the intial "wow" of pricing here vs say XBLA. However we'd like to stay on this platform so we need to figure out for ourselves the way things work, price wise. There, you don't get honesty like that from most devs!
$2.99 seems more than fair, given the level of quality apparent in the preview. The "race to the bottom" pricing is something I wouldn't want to deal with, if I were a developer. It's almost to the point where buyers expect every game to have a list of 100 amazing features for 99 cents.
Thanks for that. Dunno if this is original (I'm sure it can't be) but in our office we refer to these programs as "McApps"
So no compatibility for 2nd gen itouch? Any chance it could be made for 2nd gen at a later date? This looks great.
Oh we support it alright - the game runs on my 3G right here. At 5 fps. If everyone promises not to one-star it, I'll release it. It certainly gives longer gameplay than the other versions.
iPromise EDIT: Gratzi!!!!! Front page coverage http://toucharcade.com/2011/03/14/upcoming-great-little-war-game/
I genuinely cannot fathom these guys who are saying that 99c is too much! How on earth did they afford an iPhone to begin with!? I think people are far too stingey with the App Store these days. As soon as the words "IAP" are uttered, it seems half the world switches off. But this is an option; if you like the game then you have an option to get some more content for next-to-nothing. Would they be happier if the LD version of the game was $1.98 to begin with!? If you think about it, it's actually a no-lose situation for us consumers - what if you spent $1.98 and you don't like it? At least this way if you don't like it you've only spent a dollar! I must say, having played the beta continuously for the past 5 days, we should be biting the dev's hands off, not whining that there's an option to buy even more content. The world has gone quite quite mad!
Please leave the blood in the game.. It just makes sence when killing a human that they bleed. If need be make it an option on and off with the default set on off. Quite frankly I'm kinda tired of some people asking to remove it because they are trying to keep their child from ever seeing blood in a game. If your worried about it then just don't play it in front of your child or better yet just explain these things happen in real life.. He/she is going to learn it someday. That's my 2 cents without being to harsh. And I expect some type of flaming but whatever.. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
