So Catfan - I am too old to date anymore - but after being terrified (like you) of rejection - I can tell you, the terror is not only in your mind - it is in theirs as well. A lot of times girls will say "no" not because they don't like you - they are JUST as scared of you - and saying "no" makes it so they don't have to worry about looking like a fool to you, and then you don't like them, and don't go out with them anymore - So - what to do? If you can - try and talk with her about some neutral subject - a teacher that you both have? An upcoming sports event? A movie that you saw and liked? People don't like negativity - so don't be mean (even if it is not directed at her, she will probably not like it). Assuming that you can have a brief conversation with her - you might have an idea that she does, or does not like you and you can proceed. If you still don't have a clue - end the conversation with something like - "It was really nice talking with you, I'll talk to you again sometime" - that is pretty non-committal, it could happen or not - but if you want - in a day or so (NOT immediately) - run into her again, and chat with her again - rinse and repeat - at some point you will either ask her out because it is easy, or you or her will decide you don't like each other... Believe me - as much as guys worry about this stuff - females worry about it thousands of times more... Be yourself, if you try and be something you are not - you will always lose. good luck in your endeavor...

Don't fret Brethren! Woman are extremely complex and hard to understand but with the new: Woman FOR DUMMIES Book solves this JK. But, first off, see if she will talk to you. Telephone, Text, IM, Facebook, etc, in person: TALK TO HER! If shes not going to acknowledge you, she will never say yes. If she talks back to you, and your sure about it, ask her out to a movie or anything, or her number (if you don't have it already) and then go in... Hope its good advice! Good luck!!
