Ugh another Gameloft game without graphics optimized for new devices.

The screenshots are clearly iPhone 4 resolution (retina display).

    Err so...?

I'm talking about using OpenGL ES 2.0 effects, and stuff, not just upscaling it to a higher resolution.

Can you tell if OpenGL ES 2.0 effects are being used from 3 screenshots?
Do you know exactly what stage in development the screenshots were taken?
Do you know how far into developing this game they are?

    No.

Well the graphics of any Gameloft game I've seen yet don't substantially get better even if you give them a few months so far. they just seem to fix visual bugs seen in trailer videos and early screenshots, but I've never seen them add detail or effects between a preview and a release.

And those 3 screenshots definitely have no GL 2.0. Faked shadows, 2D textures, and solid color objects. All signs of GL 1.1.

I'm not saying the graphics are terrible, they are good, but Gameloft is not pushing the device's capabilities.

I hope this comes out soon. It looks polished in the screens.

And everyone else is? This game has probably been in development for a long time and was probably set out to take advantage of the iPhone 3GS features, we'll probably start seeing Open GL 2.0 games from gameloft later

Well EA did in NFS Shift almost a year ago.

ALSO! Gameloft is a large company with a lot of resources, they can't use the same excuse that indie devs use, since they have like 1000X the money and resources.

And look at Psychoz, making Forgotten Memories with like 10X the graphics of this game, and Aralon, which also has amazing optimized graphics.

and Epic's Unreal engine 3 game is coming out too, and that game looks simply stunning on my iPod.

Yeah a lot of other people are. (Please don't count the 10000 indie devs in this number.)

    Minigun plz?

Why didn't they change the mounted machine gun for a mounted minigun? I friggin love miniguns! Maybe the Vulcan, or the XM18, or the M134 (up to 6000 rounds per minute! *drool*)

Splinter Cell: Conviction had a minigun mounted on the boat, so it's possible that Gameloft will include one in this game too.

The problem is that they are still targeting 2nd and probably even 1st gen devices, which realistically is a smart thing to do since they still probably represent half the user base if not more. OpenGL ES 2.0 is not backwards compatible with OpenGL ES 1.1 so going OpenGL ES 2.0 would necessitate separate 1.1 and 2.0 engines and game versions. Gameloft is a big company and could throw a dedicated team on each version, but the pricing/budget probably means that's not likely and it's more ideal to have one well optimized OpenGL ES 1.1 engine than 2 separate engines not as well optimized. Even with an OpenGL ES 1.1 engine, hopefully they are still pushing higher quality textures, additional effects, and possibly antialiasing on 3rd gen devices and higher in addition to simply higher screen resolution for 4th gen devices.

It is good that a big name engine developer like Epic is drawing a line and pushing UE3 as OpenGL ES 2.0 only to drive technology progress. And it make sense for them too, since one of their main focuses is to allow easy porting of existing assets from UE3 games on PC and console which are all shader based. Sadly we're probably still a year away from developers like Gameloft that require volume sales and whose existing assets are OpenGL ES 1.1 based to drop support for 2nd gen and older devices and focus on pushing the capabilities of newer devices.

Graphics aren't and so amazing as I thought Well as I see these screenshots aren't and very high quality so I hope iPhone 4 will have Better graphics but if they keep it that way they well never go forward they should just make a two titles one that it will be pre 3GS and one that it would be 3GS ,4 and iPad And make the 3GS ,4,iPad more hight priced

As I've said before, Gameloft is in the business of making as much money as humanly possible. As such, they will never abandon old tech. Abandoning old tech means leaving a percentage of potential customers behind and, in the process, cutting off their nose to spite their face. They will continue to create games that are compatable with 1st and 2nd Gen devices, and that alone will stunt overall growth when it comes to the graphical capabilities of the gaming engines that Gameloft utlizes.

If you replace never with "for the time being" I would agree. At some point there will be a turning point, probably when 3rd/4th and above gen devices overtake 1st/2nd gen devices. At that point, Gameloft will have to make the choice. Not supporting the newer tech might also cause them to loose sales as other games, using newer tech (such as Epic's game, Rage etc) are and will show just how good it can be and customers will begin to expect more.
